Start with the least destructive fixes: check Activision’s Known Issues page, repair or verify Warzone’s files, let Shader Preloading finish, update Windows and your graphics driver, then test with overlays and tuning utilities disabled. Dev Error 6036 is a Warzone crash message, not a Windows code with one publicly documented cause, so reinstalling the entire game should be a last resort.
Before changing anything
- Note whether you use Battle.net or Steam.
- Record the exact wording, including any bracketed filename or asset name. That name may identify what was loading, but it does not prove that the file is the cause.
- Write down what changed first: a Warzone update, graphics-driver update, shader compilation, new utility, or Windows change.
- Check the date and entries on Activision’s Known Issues in Call of Duty: Warzone page. If many players began crashing after the same patch, local repairs may not help until Activision ships a fix.
Do not confuse 6036 with a DirectX error, a hexadecimal (0x…) crash code, a connection error, an account or anti-cheat prompt, or an unsupported-hardware warning. The remedies differ.
Fix 1: Repair Warzone’s installation
File repair is the safest targeted response when the crash follows an update, names an asset, or occurs while loading menus or a map. It can replace damaged or missing data without deleting the whole installation.
Battle.net: Scan and Repair
- Open Battle.net and select Call of Duty: Warzone.
- Open the options menu (normally the gear beside Play).
- Select Scan and Repair, then Begin Scan if prompted.
- Let the scan and any download finish. Restart Battle.net and launch Warzone.

Steam: Verify integrity of game files
- Open Steam and choose Library.
- Right-click Call of Duty: Warzone and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to replace anything it reports.
Steam’s labels can change with client updates. Its Warzone support entry is at Steam Technical Support. Verification does not rule out shaders, drivers, background software, security settings, or a game-side bug.
Fix 2: Let Shader Preloading finish
After repair, an update, or a driver change, start Warzone and remain at the Main Menu while Shader Preloading completes. Do not queue for a match, navigate away repeatedly, or restart the game while the indicator is still progressing. Activision says leaving the menu can interrupt this first-boot process and cause performance problems.
- Launch Warzone after repair or updating.
- Stay at the Main Menu until the shader indicator reports completion.
- If the process is clearly complete, restart the game once and test the same action that produced 6036.
Shader preloading is a high-value stability step, not a guaranteed 6036 cure.

Fix 3: Update Windows and the graphics driver
Warzone supports Windows 10 and Windows 11; Windows 7 and Windows 8 are unsupported. Install normal supported Windows updates, restart, and then test again. Activision’s March 11, 2026 guide says the latest Windows 11 version improves NVIDIA stability, but no Windows update fixes every PC.
Driver numbers change. Activision’s page checked August 18, 2026 listed these recommendations:

Verify the current recommendation at Activision and the manufacturer’s site before installing. Do not use random third-party driver-updater programs. If 6036 began immediately after a driver update, a clean reinstall or carefully selected rollback is a conditional diagnostic test, not an official universal fix.

Fix 4: Disable overlays and conflicting applications
Activision specifically identifies NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex as possible conflicts, and recommends updating Razer Synapse if it is installed. For a test, also disable Discord, Steam, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, Xbox Game Bar, RGB/peripheral utilities, FPS counters, recording software, third-party antivirus overlays, and motherboard-tuning tools.

- Exit each program completely, including its system-tray process.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch Warzone with overlays, monitoring, recording, and tuning disabled.
- Repeat the activity that triggered 6036.
- If stable, re-enable programs one at a time to identify the conflict.
The named applications are documented possible conflicts, not proof that any one of them causes every 6036 crash.
Fix 5: Return hardware settings to stock
Temporarily undo GPU or CPU overclocks, undervolts, aggressive XMP/EXPO memory profiles, and custom fan-control or tuning profiles. Stock settings remove a stability variable; they do not establish that overclocking caused your error. Fix 6: Check antivirus access
Inspect your antivirus quarantine or protection history for blocked Warzone files. If you trust the installation, add the actual Warzone folder as a temporary exclusion and test; do not permanently disable antivirus protection.
- Find the installation directory used by Battle.net or Steam.
- Add only that folder to the antivirus exclusion list.
- Launch and test Warzone.
- Remove the exclusion if it changes nothing.
Product-specific menus change, so use the current instructions in Activision’s guide. Never download replacement .ff or executable files from unofficial sites.

Fix 7: Use a Windows clean boot
A clean boot isolates third-party services; it is a diagnostic state, not a permanent gaming setup. Record what you change, hide Microsoft services before disabling non-Microsoft entries, restart, and test Warzone. If the crash disappears, restore services in groups until the conflict is identified, concentrating on overlays, RGB software, monitoring tools, antivirus, and peripheral utilities. Re-enable normal services afterward.

Fix 8: Restore ASLR and undo security “optimizations”
ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) is a Windows exploit-mitigation feature. Activision says to re-enable it if you disabled it and the game will not start. Review any exploit-protection tool, FPS script, or optimization guide you used and restore supported Windows security settings. Do not weaken security further to chase 6036. TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot requirements are separate security prompts, not a documented Dev Error 6036 fix; see Activision’s security requirements if you receive that specific prompt.
Advanced cache and configuration troubleshooting
Launcher repair and file verification are the preferred ways to rebuild game data. Manual shader-cache or configuration cleanup can be useful after a driver or game update, but the current Activision 6036 guidance does not publish a dedicated folder-deletion recipe.
- Back up configuration files first; deleting them can reset graphics and keybinds.
- Use only reversible, documented cache-rebuild steps for your current driver and launcher.
- Do not randomly delete
.fffiles, launcher caches, or unknown folders. Doing so can trigger a repair loop, another large download, or loss of diagnostic evidence.
Historical forum and Reddit reports, including this Blizzard forum thread, a Warzone report, and a CODWarzone report, are anecdotal and inconsistent—not guaranteed procedures.
Last resort: Reinstall Warzone
Reinstall only after repair, shader completion, current drivers, software isolation, antivirus checks, stock settings, and a clean boot. A reinstall replaces local files but cannot fix an update-side defect.
- Uninstall Warzone through Battle.net or Steam.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall from the same launcher. Activision’s installation routes are documented at Installation and Setup.
- Apply all updates, then wait at the Main Menu for Shader Preloading to finish.
- Test before restoring overlays, tuning profiles, or custom security changes.
When the error is probably outside your PC
Stop repeating local repairs when 6036 began immediately after a major update, the Known Issues page lists a related crash, many players report the same behavior, or the game still fails after current drivers, a clean boot, stock settings, and a clean installation. Submit Activision’s PC Crash Report and include:
- Warzone build or update date
- Battle.net or Steam
- GPU model and driver version
- Windows version
- Exact trigger and crash frequency
- Full error text and any filename
- Whether repair or verification changed the result
- Overlay, antivirus, tuning, and security changes tested
Do not buy a “PC optimizer,” switch launchers merely to chase 6036, or reinstall Windows without evidence of a broader operating-system problem. A crash while entering a match is not automatically a network fault, and a named .ff file is not an instruction to delete it.
