Start by comparing the replay file or local recording with YouTube’s stream preview. If the local video is already choppy, investigate the source, frame-rate handling, timestamps, and encoder load. If the local output is smooth but YouTube is not, check the stream-health warnings, outbound connection, and playback on another connection. The right fix depends on where the choppiness first appears—not on one universal FFmpeg switch.
Find where the choppiness starts
Compare the source replay or a local output with YouTube’s preview during the same section. YouTube advises checking the encoder’s own preview, encoder errors, CPU load, and a local archive before concluding that the network is responsible (YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance).
- The source or local output is choppy: focus first on the replay, timestamps and frame-rate handling, and whether FFmpeg can encode the video fast enough.
- The local output is smooth, but YouTube’s preview is choppy: check YouTube’s stream-health messages, encoder settings, and the upload path.
- YouTube’s preview looks smooth, but playback is choppy for a viewer: compare playback on another connection and at a different player quality before changing the FFmpeg command (YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance).
Make one change at a time and note whether it improves the same portion of the replay. Otherwise, it is easy to mistake a playback or network change for an encoder fix.
Check whether FFmpeg is sending a file or a live input
For a replay file, pace input in real time
If FFmpeg is reading a media file that should play out as a live stream, use -re on that input. FFmpeg documents it as reading at the input’s native frame rate; it is equivalent to -readrate 1. Input options belong before the input they govern. For example, the relevant ordering is ffmpeg -re -i replay.mp4 ...—the rest of the command depends on your encoding and YouTube settings.

Check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version before applying an option; behavior and available options can vary by build. You can check the version with ffmpeg -version. See the FFmpeg documentation.
For a capture device or other live input, do not add it automatically
FFmpeg cautions that using -re or -readrate 1 on an actual capture device or live input may cause packet loss. Identify the input type first. A replay file needs real-time pacing when being played out as live; a live source is already arriving in real time.

Check encoder speed, errors, and system load
Watch the FFmpeg console output and system CPU load while the choppy section is being streamed. Look for encoder errors and whether processing can keep up with the intended frame rate. There is no universal CPU percentage that proves an encoder is or is not overloaded, so correlate the load and logs with the moment the video degrades.
- If choppiness is also present in a local output or archive, inspect the input and encoding path before changing network settings.
- If FFmpeg reports errors or falls behind during the affected section, address those symptoms and repeat the test.
- If local output is clean and the encoder shows no relevant errors, proceed to the YouTube stream health and upload checks rather than assuming CPU is the cause.
Match the stream to YouTube’s settings
Compare the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe spacing with YouTube’s current live encoder guidance and any error shown in YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate, so a figure for one format is not a universal target (YouTube live encoder settings).

These are YouTube’s published H.264 ingestion figures, not independent test results. Use the row that matches the stream you actually send; do not apply it to another codec or format. YouTube’s live error guidance also flags incorrect video settings and keyframe frequency, so use the dashboard’s specific error text to guide corrections rather than guessing (YouTube live encoder settings and errors).
Test the upload path and viewer playback
If your local output is smooth but the YouTube preview or stream health indicates trouble, investigate the outbound connection. Test upload capacity and the connection used to send the stream. A viewer can also try another connection and playback quality: if the issue changes with the viewer’s connection or quality setting while the creator’s preview remains smooth, that points away from the local replay file.

Do not treat a faster upload result alone as proof that every part of the path is healthy. Recheck stream health during a representative test and compare it with FFmpeg’s output and the local archive.

- Choose a private or unlisted test stream and a replay segment with movement and audio representative of the gaming footage. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and monitoring stream health (YouTube live-stream testing guidance).
- Record or inspect local output while streaming, and watch the FFmpeg console and system load during the same segment.
- Compare the local result with YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages.
- Change one relevant variable—such as file pacing, an encoder setting, or the upload path—then repeat the same segment.
This separates source and encoding problems from transmission and viewer playback problems without assuming that every choppy stream has the same cause.
