Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Start by locating where the problem appears: in the game or local recording, in the encoder preview, in the streaming platform’s health dashboard, or only on viewers’ screens. That distinction helps you separate capture and audio/video faults from encoder overload, unstable upload, platform ingest errors, and viewer-side buffering—before changing settings or buying equipment.
Diagnose the layer before changing settings
Check the same moment in three places: your encoder preview, a local recording if you have one, and the platform’s live dashboard or playback. Note who sees the problem and when it began. YouTube recommends checking the encoder, CPU load, local archive, and outbound internet as part of troubleshooting; its Live Control Room health messages can help identify ingest or format issues.
- It appears in the encoder preview or local recording: investigate game capture, source routing, audio/video devices, and encoder workload.
- The preview looks healthy but the platform reports a problem: inspect platform health messages and stream settings, then test the outbound connection.
- Your preview and platform dashboard look healthy, but viewers report buffering: investigate playback latency, platform delivery, and viewers’ devices or connections. A clean outgoing stream does not guarantee smooth playback for every viewer.
Change one relevant setting at a time and check the result. If you change bitrate, resolution, and frame rate together, it becomes harder to tell which change helped.
Why is my stream dropping frames?
In OBS, dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the bitrate you selected. This is a network-path symptom, distinct from a game that renders poorly or an encoder that cannot process frames quickly enough. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance.

Check upload capacity and bitrate
- Check your actual, reliable upload capacity; a high download speed does not establish that your upload can sustain a live stream.
- Add the bitrate of the outgoing stream, including a backup stream if you use one, and compare the total with available upload capacity. YouTube says the total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That is YouTube guidance, not a universal threshold for every platform.
- Check whether other people or devices are using the same connection. YouTube notes that shared network use can reduce the bandwidth available to the streamer.
- If the connection cannot reliably carry the current settings, lower bitrate first; reduce resolution or frame rate if needed. Use the recommendations for your platform, codec, and target resolution rather than treating a single bitrate as right for every stream.
For YouTube, its published recommendations include 17 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60 AV1 or H.265; these are YouTube recommendations, not minimums for all platforms. The available recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so consult YouTube’s encoder settings for the format you actually use.
Inspect OBS and the network path
- Open OBS’s statistics and logs to see whether dropped frames coincide with network trouble.
- Temporarily test without a VPN, security software, or network-prioritization utility if one could be interfering. Restore protection afterward and change only what you can verify is relevant.
- If you suspect Wi-Fi instability, test a wired Ethernet connection where practical. Treat it as a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix; confirm the cable and connector suit your devices.
- OBS documents Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing, as well as dynamic bitrate, as possible diagnostics or mitigations. Dynamic bitrate can reduce quality and does not repair the underlying connection, so check whether the fault persists.
Why does my stream keep disconnecting?
Disconnections can result from an unstable connection to the ingest server, an upload path that cannot sustain the selected bitrate, or a platform-side configuration problem. Check OBS statistics and logs around the disconnect, then check the platform’s dashboard for health or format messages. Compare the encoder output with the platform’s status rather than repeatedly restarting without identifying which side is failing.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Confirm the encoder is still producing output and review its logs for a network or connection error.
- Check whether the platform received the stream and whether Live Control Room reports a health issue.
- Test outbound upload and check for shared network use or software that may interfere with the connection.
- If a third-party encoder fails to start with YouTube, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to obtain a new stream key and update the encoder. Keep the key private: do not show it in screenshots or public logs.
For YouTube-specific errors and their meanings, use YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting page. Do not assume a new stream key will fix an upload-capacity or general network problem.
Why does my stream look or sound bad?
If the defect is visible in the encoder preview or local recording, first check the source rather than the audience’s connection: confirm the correct game-capture source and scene, inspect video and audio device routing, and review the local recording. YouTube recommends checking CPU load and a local archive; encoder workload is a useful place to investigate when local output is already poor.

- Wrong or missing game image: check that the intended game-capture source is active and routed into the scene being sent.
- Missing, doubled, or incorrect audio: inspect which audio devices and sources feed the scene, and whether the intended source is muted or routed more than once.
- Choppy or degraded local output: compare encoder preview with the recording, check CPU load, and review encoder settings. If the encoder is struggling, lower demanding output settings and test again.
- Clean local output but poor live result: check the platform’s stream-health messages and outbound internet before replacing capture or audio equipment.
For YouTube RTMP/RTMPS, current guidance recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Requirements can differ by platform and ingest protocol, so verify the actual destination’s settings. YouTube also identifies audio/video stream count, audio sample and channel settings, progressive video, frame rate, codec, and bitrate as potential configuration checks. See YouTube’s encoder settings and its live-stream error guidance.
Why is my stream lagging or buffering for viewers?
First compare what you see with what viewers report. OBS distinguishes network-related dropped frames from buffering during playback: a stream can have no dropped frames while viewers still buffer because their networks, devices, or locations differ. See OBS’s buffering troubleshooting guidance.

If only viewers report buffering, check whether the platform flags an ingest problem and consider whether the bitrate or resolution limits compatibility for some viewers. Lowering either can make playback easier for viewers with less capacity, but reduces image quality. Check the platform’s available delivery options rather than assuming every viewer receives the same playback conditions.
Latency is also a trade-off. YouTube says lower latency may mean more playback buffering; low latency is more useful when you are interacting with viewers than for a stream without interaction. Choose a latency setting that suits the stream rather than lowering it automatically. See YouTube’s live-stream settings.

What bitrate should I use for streaming?
There is no one bitrate that fits every platform, resolution, frame rate, codec, and network. Choose settings supported by your platform, then make sure your reliable upload capacity can carry the total stream bitrate with headroom. YouTube’s 1080p60 recommendations illustrate why codec matters: its published H.264 recommendation is 17 Mbps, while its AV1 and H.265 recommendation is 12 Mbps. Use the current platform table for your specific output rather than applying those figures elsewhere.
- Start with the platform’s recommendation for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you intend to send.
- Leave capacity for ordinary variation in your upload connection and account for other traffic sharing it.
- If frames drop or the connection disconnects, lower bitrate and retest; if necessary, reduce resolution or frame rate as well.
- If the stream is stable but viewers buffer, consider whether a lower bitrate or resolution would reach more viewers, while weighing the quality loss.
