A gaming “freeze” can mean a crashed game, a graphics-driver reset, or a complete hardware lockup. Classify the symptom first, then change one variable at a time. Save important work and avoid repeated forced shutdowns, which can damage files.
Identify what is actually freezing

Note whether Ctrl+Alt+Delete works, whether audio loops, whether the display returns within 10–60 seconds, whether every 3D game is affected, and whether the problem began after an update, driver, BIOS change, XMP/EXPO profile, overclock or new peripheral.
Try the low-risk fixes first
- Restart Windows normally and install pending Windows updates.
- Install the current graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel. On a laptop or all-in-one, check the manufacturer’s support page first.
- Confirm the game meets its recommended requirements, not only its minimum requirements.
- Temporarily disable Discord, Xbox Game Bar, Steam, NVIDIA or AMD recording overlays, MSI Afterburner and other tuning, RGB, monitoring, remote-access or security utilities.
- Disconnect recently added USB devices and remove or update mods.
- Test the same game and scene again. Do not update several components at once; otherwise you lose the evidence showing what changed.
Steam recommends updating Windows and drivers, verifying files and disabling non-essential software: Steam Support.
Verify or repair the game installation
Steam
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
Steam compares installed files with its manifest and redownloads damaged or missing files. Labels can move as Steam updates. Other launchers provide similarly named Verify or Repair commands. Verification does not fix corrupted saves, shader-compilation problems, incompatible mods or a broken launcher, so check the game developer’s known-issues page when only one title fails.

Return CPU, GPU and memory to stable defaults
Disable CPU and GPU overclocks, GPU undervolts, Intel XMP, AMD EXPO, motherboard enhancement modes, custom fan curves and power-limit profiles. Retest before making another change. If stability returns, the component is not necessarily defective; the previous settings may be unstable for that CPU, GPU, memory kit, BIOS version or workload. AMD recommends factory-default testing: AMD stability guidance.
Update, clean-install or roll back the graphics driver
NVIDIA
Use a normal update when the driver works. If freezes began after an update or installation became corrupted, download the appropriate Game Ready Driver, close browsers, video players and monitoring tools, run the installer as administrator, choose the custom/advanced route and select clean installation when offered. Reboot afterward. NVIDIA’s procedure is documented here.
AMD
AMD Cleanup Utility removes AMD graphics and audio software and drivers and may reboot into Safe Mode; it does not remove AMD chipset drivers. AMD Software also offers a Factory Reset/Clean Install option: AMD Cleanup Utility. On OEM laptops, prefer the computer maker’s package when generic drivers remove custom features: AMD release guidance.

Intel
Identify the graphics product, download its driver from Intel Download Center, run the installer and select Execute a clean installation if shown. Intel says this removes old graphics drivers and restores settings to defaults: Intel instructions. A newer driver is not automatically better; roll back to a known-good or OEM version if the timing points to a regression.

Monitor CPU package temperature, GPU core and (where available) hotspot/junction temperature, clocks, fan speed, thermal-throttle and power-limit indicators. There is no universal safe temperature: limits vary by model, firmware and cooling design.
- A freeze only after heat builds suggests dust, blocked airflow, a loose heatsink, failed fan or pump, or a laptop cooling limitation.
- An instant shutdown or reboot under GPU load raises suspicion of PSU capacity or age, cabling, a loose GPU connector, overheating or protection events.
- A problem that began after an undervolt or fan-curve change should be tested at defaults.
Test RAM and storage
Memory
- Search Windows for Windows Memory Diagnostic.
- Choose Restart now and check for problems.
- After reboot, open Event Viewer and find
MemoryDiagnostics-Resultsin the System log.
A quick pass does not prove XMP/EXPO stability. Disable memory overclocking, test one module at a time in the motherboard’s recommended slots, and reseat modules only with power disconnected and the manufacturer’s instructions followed. For persistent intermittent faults, a longer bootable test such as MemTest86 is an option; AMD lists it as a third-party diagnostic.

Storage
Back up important data before repair operations. Long loading hangs, texture-streaming freezes, 100% disk activity, file corruption or disk events justify checking the SSD/HDD maker’s health tool. Windows’ filesystem check is:
chkdsk /f C:It may require a restart. chkdsk can repair filesystem issues but cannot cure a physically failing drive; do not repeatedly stress a failing disk before securing data.

Repair Windows system files
Open Terminal, Command Prompt or PowerShell as administrator and run each command to completion:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannowMicrosoft documents DISM first and SFC second: repair guidance. “Did not find any integrity violations” rules out those Windows-file errors, not defective RAM, GPU, PSU, storage, BIOS or third-party drivers. If SFC cannot repair files, repeat DISM/SFC or use Windows recovery options.

Clean boot
- Search for
msconfigand open System Configuration. - On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then disable remaining third-party services.
- From the Startup tab, open Task Manager and disable nonessential startup apps.
- Restart and test. Re-enable items in groups to identify a conflict, then restore normal startup.
Do not permanently disable Microsoft or security services without understanding the impact. Microsoft’s procedure is described here.
Safe Mode and rollback
When Windows is unstable outside games, use Settings or Windows Recovery Environment > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then choose Safe Mode. From there, roll back a recent driver, uninstall a strongly implicated update or use System Restore if a suitable point exists. Back up files before reset or reinstall operations.

Read Windows’ evidence carefully
In Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System, inspect the minutes before several incidents. Also use Reliability Monitor for a clearer timeline of application crashes, driver failures and Windows errors.
- Kernel-Power 41 records an unclean shutdown; it does not identify a bad PSU by itself.
- Display-driver or TDR events increase suspicion of the graphics stack but do not prove the GPU is defective.
- Disk events can implicate a drive, cable, controller or filesystem.
- WHEA errors warrant careful hardware, firmware and stability investigation.
- Events written after a forced power-off may be consequences, not causes.
For a BSOD, record the stop code and compare it with recent changes. Microsoft recommends reviewing the System log around the failure: bug-check guidance.
Isolate the failing component
- Retest at factory defaults with overlays and tuning tools closed.
- Try another demanding game and a non-gaming workload.
- Use the same repeatable scene and record time, temperatures and changes.
- Where practical, test a known-good RAM kit, GPU, PSU or drive, or move the suspected component to another compatible system.
- Keep a dated log of updates, BIOS changes, crashes and results.
Multiple unrelated games, hard locks during memory or stress testing, repeated shutdowns, WHEA or disk errors, or behavior that follows a physical component make hardware more likely than a game installation.
When to stop troubleshooting
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician when the computer is under warranty, you smell burning, see physical damage, cannot safely open it, data is at risk, or repeated hard shutdowns continue after stock settings and clean driver testing. Likely suspects include RAM, GPU or VRAM, PSU, cooling, motherboard/BIOS and SSD/HDD. Windows reinstallation is a late option: it cannot repair defective hardware.

Quick escalation checklist
- Classify the symptom and record stop codes or timing.
- Restart, update Windows, verify game files, remove mods and disable overlays.
- Disable XMP/EXPO and all CPU/GPU tuning.
- Check model-specific temperatures, airflow, connectors and power behavior.
- Clean-install or roll back the graphics driver, using the OEM package on laptops when appropriate.
- Run Windows Memory Diagnostic, inspect Event Viewer/Reliability Monitor and check storage health.
- Run DISM then SFC; use clean boot or Safe Mode to isolate software.
- Escalate to warranty repair or component diagnosis when freezes persist.
