PTDE’s frame-rate behavior and DSfix instructions do not automatically apply to Remastered. The community-maintained technical reference also describes different crash cases and controller checks, so start with the symptom you actually have rather than applying every workaround.
Confirm your edition before changing settings
These steps concern the original PC release, Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition. The official PC manual and Steam technical support page are also for PTDE. If your library says Dark Souls Remastered, do not install DSfix or follow PTDE-specific configuration edits based on this guide.
The detailed troubleshooting reference is PCGamingWiki’s PTDE page. It is community-maintained, covers a legacy release, and includes some fixes with weak or missing citations. Treat its older operating-system and configuration workarounds as leads for matching symptoms, not guaranteed fixes for every current Windows, driver, or hardware setup.
Fix low frame rates or a 30 FPS lock
PCGamingWiki reports that PTDE is capped at 30 FPS by default and may drop to 15 FPS when it cannot sustain 30. It identifies demanding areas such as Blighttown and large animated characters as examples. A Steam Community thread uses the wording “FPS LOCKED AT 30 EVEN WITH DSFIX,” but that title is an example of a reported problem, not evidence of how common it is.

Start with the default 30 FPS behavior
Before changing the frame-rate cap, confirm the game launches and runs at its default behavior. If performance falls below the cap in a particular area, the source does not establish one universal cause or a guaranteed hardware fix. Avoid assuming that every 30 FPS display means DSfix has failed: the default cap itself is 30 FPS.
Consider DSfix only if you accept the tradeoff
For PTDE, the PCGamingWiki entry says DSfix can unlock the cap, set a frame-rate limit, and enable Vsync. An unlocked or higher cap may make motion look smoother, but it is not a guaranteed performance improvement and comes with documented caveats: movement and slope behavior can change, and the Undead Dragon’s toxic sludge can have a visual issue at higher frame rates. If you choose to try a higher rate, change one setting at a time and return to the 30 FPS baseline if gameplay behavior or visuals become worse.

Diagnose crashes by when they happen
Do not apply a crash workaround until you have matched it to the point where PTDE fails. PCGamingWiki lists several distinct cases, and its proposed fixes are not established as universal solutions on current systems.
Crash after the start screen
The PTDE reference associates a crash after the start screen with VSFilter.dll. Check whether that file or related software is present on your system before acting on this lead; the source does not show that it explains every post-start-screen crash.

Crash when opening PC settings
The reference links this case to some monitor refresh rates. It describes editing DarkSouls.ini or switching to a 60 Hz setting before opening the game’s PC settings. This is an older, symptom-specific workaround; make a copy of any configuration file before editing it, and do not treat 60 Hz as a general crash fix.
Crash on startup in an older Windows environment
PCGamingWiki lists startup problems tied to older Windows environments. Because those instructions target legacy conditions and the page does not establish reliability across current Windows versions, use them only if your operating system and crash behavior match the described case.

Check the graphics processor on switchable-graphics systems
If your PC has Nvidia Optimus or another switchable-graphics setup, the reference recommends assigning both DARKSOULS.exe and DATA.exe to the Nvidia GPU. This is a targeted graphics-selection check, not a general remedy for crashes on every PC.
Troubleshoot a controller that is not detected or mapped correctly
The official PTDE manual says an “Xbox 360 Controller for Windows (or equivalent) is strongly recommended,” and Steam’s technical support page repeats that recommendation. PCGamingWiki lists XInput-compatible controllers as supported. These statements describe a recommended controller type and a compatibility category; they do not establish that replacing a controller will fix every input problem.

- Check detection first. Connect the controller before launching the game and see whether PTDE recognizes it. Confirm the game’s inputs respond as expected before changing software or buying hardware.
- Look for a conflicting device. If you have multiple controllers or input devices connected, disconnect the others and test again. PCGamingWiki suggests checking which device the game detects first and disabling conflicting controller devices.
- Verify the mapping. If the controller is detected but buttons behave incorrectly, inspect its current mappings and any controller software or remapping layers already in use.
- Use an emulation layer only when needed. For a DirectInput device that PTDE does not handle as expected, PCGamingWiki describes using X360ce to emulate an Xbox 360 controller. This is a community recommendation, not a confirmed fix for all DirectInput devices or current setups.
If you are deciding whether a different controller or mapping tool is appropriate, first establish whether your existing controller is XInput-compatible, whether the game detects it, and whether another connected device is interfering. The manual’s recommendation alone is not a reason to buy replacement hardware before those checks.
