Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf OBS struggles to stream 4K at 60 frames per second, first identify which counter is rising: rendering lag, encoding lag, or dropped frames. They point to different bottlenecks, so changing YouTube’s bitrate will not fix a local rendering or encoding problem. Work through the least disruptive fixes first, then test a lower resolution or frame rate if your system still cannot keep up.
Identify what is lagging before changing settings
Open OBS’s View > Stats window while streaming or recording a representative scene. Watch the counters and, if you need a closer diagnosis, review the OBS log for that session. The counters distinguish local rendering and encoding pressure from frames lost during delivery; they do not, by themselves, identify every underlying cause.
- Rendering lag: OBS is not rendering or compositing frames quickly enough. Scene complexity and competition for GPU resources are common areas to investigate.
- Encoding lag: The selected encoder is not keeping up with the requested output. Check the encoder, workload and system resources.
- Dropped frames: Delivery over the network is struggling. Check upload capacity and connection stability rather than treating this as proof of a local encoder problem.
Use the OBS counters and session log to confirm the symptom before choosing a fix. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide explains the main performance levers.
Fix OBS rendering or encoding lag in order
Make one change at a time and retest the same scene or game. That makes it easier to see which adjustment helped and avoids sacrificing quality unnecessarily.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Run OBS as administrator on Windows. Close OBS, then right-click its shortcut and choose Run as administrator. OBS says this can let Windows reserve GPU capacity for OBS and often resolves GPU overload. This step applies to Windows, not macOS.
- Close other GPU-heavy applications. Quit programs you opened that are using substantial GPU resources. On Windows, check Task Manager; on macOS, check Activity Monitor. Retest before changing your stream output.
- Limit game frame rate. If you are streaming a game, cap its frame rate to your monitor’s refresh rate or enable V-Sync. If instability continues, try matching the game’s frame-rate cap to OBS’s output frame rate.
- Reduce game graphics settings. Lower demanding options and retest. The goal is to free resources for both the game and OBS, not to change settings unrelated to the observed bottleneck.
- Simplify scenes and sources. Remove sources you do not need in the active scene or collection. Reduce the resolution of capture and media sources when their full resolution is unnecessary; disable or reduce costly filters; reduce the number and dimensions of browser sources; and use a static image source for artwork that does not need to move.
- Lower output resolution if the bottleneck remains. Test 1440p60 or 1080p60 as practical fallbacks, not as OBS-mandated settings. If 60 fps still will not stay stable, test 30 fps. Lowering the base canvas resolution is a last resort because you may need to reposition or resize sources and layouts.
These changes address resource pressure; none guarantees a fix on every machine. A system-specific diagnosis depends on the affected stream’s Stats counters and log, plus your operating system, CPU, GPU, encoder and workload.
Check the encoder choice and avoid risky tuning
OBS generally recommends hardware encoding because a dedicated encoding component shifts work away from the CPU, and modern hardware encoders can have minimal performance impact. It is a useful option to test, not a guaranteed cure: a hardware encoder will not necessarily resolve a GPU rendering bottleneck. OBS documents NVENC on Windows and Linux; AMD AMF on Windows and Linux with compatible hardware and plugin documentation; Intel QSV on Windows and Linux subject to generation caveats; and Apple VideoToolbox on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Its guide says Apple Silicon streaming supports H.264, while Intel Mac VideoToolbox streaming is unsupported because of constant-bitrate limitations; the cited workaround is x264. Keep relevant GPU drivers current. See OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide for platform and hardware qualifications.

If you use OBS 31.0 or later with NVENC, do not treat Ultra High Quality tuning as a generic gaming-lag fix. OBS says it targets live-action artifacts such as camera sensor noise, is not recommended for gaming and significantly reduces throughput. Split Encode has narrower conditions: OBS documents it for HEVC or AV1 on NVIDIA Ada GPUs with at least two NVENC engines, and says it is automatically used only under documented fast-preset and above-2160p conditions. Check your OBS version, GPU generation, codec and actual bottleneck before considering advanced options. Details are in OBS’s Advanced NVENC Options (31.0).
Verify YouTube’s 4K60 ingest settings
These settings help match the stream YouTube receives; they do not repair local OBS rendering or encoding lag. YouTube’s encoder-settings page lists the following 2160p60 values. The page does not display a publication date and was accessed on 2026-10-03.

| Video codec | Minimum ingest bitrate | Recommended ingest bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
- Set bitrate encoding to CBR.
- Use a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video and recommends RTMPS.
- For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC; AV1 is not supported for HDR. Its SDR guidance specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit, while HDR specifies 10-bit. AV1 at 3840 × 2160 and above requires at least two tile columns.
- YouTube says low-latency optimization is not available at 4K/2160, which uses normal latency.
Confirm that the codec and settings you select are supported by your encoder and current OBS setup. The values above are YouTube ingest guidance, not a guarantee that a particular computer can render and encode 4K60 reliably. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Separate upload problems from OBS performance problems
When Stats shows dropped frames rather than rendering or encoding lag, check available upload bandwidth and connection stability. A download-speed result does not establish that the connection can sustain an outgoing stream. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and notes that a shared connection can reduce the capacity available to an individual streamer.

Test before the event using representative audio and motion, and check whether other activity on the connection is competing with the stream. YouTube’s streaming tips cover preparation and delivery. Keep the diagnosis aligned with the counter: network adjustments target delivery problems, while scene, workload and encoder changes target local rendering or encoding pressure.

If reasonable workload reductions do not stabilize 4K60, test 1440p60 or 1080p60, then 30 fps if necessary. These are practical fallback tests based on OBS’s advice to reduce output resolution or frame rate, not official OBS-prescribed presets. Prefer a stream that stays stable over insisting on 4K60 when the current machine cannot sustain it.
