Epic Games Launcher error II-E1003 means the launcher could not download the game files needed for installation. It does not identify one specific cause: the problem may be Epic’s service, launcher cache, the game’s files or destination folder, or your network. Start by checking Epic’s service status, then restart or update the launcher, clear its cache, check the install drive, and test another network. Verify files if you already have a partial or existing installation. Reinstall Epic Games Launcher only as a last resort; Epic warns that doing so can remove installed games.
What causes II-E1003?
Epic describes II-E1003 as an installation failure in which the launcher cannot download the game files required to install a title. Its official remedies are to verify game files, clear the launcher cache, change DNS, or reinstall the launcher. The code itself does not establish which one is at fault. See Epic’s II-E1003 support article.
Common possibilities include damaged launcher cache or installation data, a problem with the destination drive or folder, an interrupted download, network filtering or DNS trouble, and a launcher- or service-side defect. An error affecting one title points more toward that game’s files or folder; the same failure across several titles makes a shared launcher, network, or service issue more plausible. Neither pattern proves a cause.
Try these low-risk fixes first
1. Check Epic’s service status
Visit Epic’s Public Status page and look for incidents involving Epic Games Store, Game Services, downloads, authentication, or content delivery. Epic also recommends checking server status before local troubleshooting in its general launcher troubleshooting guide. If an incident is listed, wait for recovery rather than deleting games or reinstalling the launcher. A page showing operational status cannot rule out a regional, account-specific, or launcher-specific fault.

2. Exit and restart the launcher
- Close the Epic Games Launcher window.
- In Windows, open the system-tray overflow area, right-click the Epic Games icon, and select Exit.
- Start the launcher again and retry the installation.
If it remains stuck installing or verifying, restart Windows before moving on.
3. Update the launcher
In the launcher, click your profile icon, open Settings, and choose Restart and Update if it appears. Then retry. Menu labels can vary by release; Epic lists updating or restarting the launcher among its standard troubleshooting steps in the launcher guide.
4. Clear the launcher cache
Quit the launcher completely first. Delete only the named cache folders below—not the entire EpicGamesLauncher directory. Cache removal clears temporary launcher data; it is not a reason to delete installed game folders.
Windows: Press Windows key + R, enter %localappdata%, and press Enter. Open EpicGamesLauncherSaved and delete any of these folders that exist: webcache, webcache_4147, or webcache_4430. One or two may be present rather than all three. Reopen the launcher and retry.

macOS: Quit Epic Games Launcher. In Finder, select Go > Go to Folder, enter ~/Library/Caches/com.epicgames.EpicGamesLauncher, and move the webcache folder to the Trash. Empty the Trash, then relaunch the launcher.
Epic documents both cache locations and the relevant folders in its cache and launcher troubleshooting instructions.
Check the game and its installation folder
Verify an existing or partial installation
Verification is most useful when the error occurs while updating, resuming, repairing, or installing over a title that the launcher already recognizes. In the launcher, open Library, click the game’s three-dot menu, select Manage, then Verify. The launcher checks local files and redownloads damaged or missing data. A brand-new install that fails at 0% may not have a recognized installation record, so the Verify option may be unavailable or unhelpful.
Inspect the destination drive
- Make sure the drive has enough free space for the game and temporary download data.
- Confirm the folder is writable and the drive is connected; avoid unavailable network shares or disconnected external drives.
- If the path is already associated with another installation, test with a new, empty folder.
- Check that the drive is healthy and uses a supported filesystem.
- If a broken or partial game folder exists, do not delete it until you have checked for saves, mods, screenshots, or other files you want to keep.
Running the launcher as administrator can help with a write-permission problem, but it will not fix a full drive, wrong path, or network failure.

Test the network and DNS
- Restart your modem or router; use a wired connection if one is available.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN and retry. VPNs can either contribute to a problem or bypass an ISP routing issue, so treat this as a test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Check whether a proxy is configured in Windows or by third-party security software.
- Try a different network, such as a phone hotspot, and compare the result.
- If the failure persists, test a reputable public DNS service available in your region. Record your original DNS settings so you can restore them if the test makes no difference.
If the download works on another network, investigate your router, DNS resolver, ISP, or filtering software. If it fails the same way on multiple networks, a launcher, game-manifest, account, or Epic service issue becomes more likely. Being able to log in or browse the Store does not prove the game-download path is working. DNS is one official Epic troubleshooting step, but it cannot repair corrupted files or a confirmed service incident; Epic’s guidance is in its II-E1003 article.
Windows-only checks
Run the launcher as administrator
Close Epic Games Launcher, right-click its shortcut, and select Run as administrator. Retry the install once. If it still fails, return to checking the destination path and permissions rather than relying on elevated access as a general fix. Epic includes administrator mode in its general troubleshooting steps.
Check firewall or security software carefully
A firewall or security product may interfere with downloads. Prefer a narrowly scoped Epic allow-list or firewall rule. If you briefly test with a security feature disabled, restore protection immediately afterward; do not leave antivirus or firewall protection off. The exact rule depends on the security product, so do not add executable paths from an unverified guide.
Consider the Windows system-file check only if other repairs fail
Epic includes this command in broader Windows launcher-repair guidance, not as a direct II-E1003 fix. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run:

Only one game fails
Restart the launcher, verify the title if it is recognized, and check its installation folder and available space. If needed, try a new empty destination folder. Remove incomplete remnants only after checking them for files you want to keep. If the problem remains limited to that title, contact Epic Support or the game’s publisher as appropriate.
Every game fails
Check Epic’s status, clear the cache, update or restart the launcher, and compare results on a second network. If the failure is identical across titles and networks, avoid repeatedly reinstalling games: a shared launcher or Epic-side defect is more plausible than several independent game-folder problems.
The error appears immediately at 0%
That timing is a clue, not a diagnosis. It can fit a cache or installation-record problem, destination-folder permissions, a launcher regression, a manifest or content-delivery failure, or a service-side issue. Check the cache and destination folder, then compare on another network.

The download fails after making progress
Check free space and drive health, then consider whether an interruption, VPN, firewall, or other filtering could have stopped the transfer. Restart the launcher and resume; if the title is recognized, try Verify before starting over in a clean folder.
The problem started after a launcher update
Confirm that the launcher has no pending Restart and Update action, clear its cache, and check Epic’s service status. A timing link does not confirm that an update caused the error. As of August 18, 2026, Epic’s support article still gives the general remedies above; it does not identify a specific launcher version as a fix.
Reinstall Epic Games Launcher only as a last resort
Epic lists reinstalling the launcher as a remedy for II-E1003, but warns that reinstalling can remove games installed through it. The warning is in Epic’s support instructions. Before proceeding:
- Back up saves that are not synchronized to the cloud.
- Record custom game-install locations and check whether you need to preserve mods, screenshots, or other local files.
- Confirm you can redownload the games; uninstalling may remove titles or leave orphaned files that need manual cleanup.
- Download the replacement launcher only from Epic’s official website.
Reinstalling may not help if Epic has a current service fault or if the same network issue remains. Do not delete the entire Epic Games folder as a shortcut; it can contain settings, manifests, installed-game references, and other data.
When local troubleshooting does not resolve it
Before contacting Epic Games Store Support, note the exact error and capture its screen. Include which game or games are affected, whether the failure happens at 0% or after progress, your operating system and launcher version, and whether another network changes the result. Provide logs if Epic Support requests them. Check the status page again before repeating local changes.
Recent user posts dated August 15–16, 2026 describe II-E1003 affecting multiple games or systems, including reports at r/EpicGamesPC and r/epic. These are anecdotal reports, not an official Epic incident notice or confirmation of a shared cause. If your tests point to a broader launcher or service problem, waiting for Epic’s status or support update is safer than repeatedly deleting files or reinstalling games.
