First, check Bethesda’s Fallout 76 server status; if you play on Xbox or PlayStation, check that network’s service status too. If services are operational, work through the connection checks below. The error alone does not show whether the cause is Bethesda’s servers, your platform network, or your own connection.
Check server and platform status first
Bethesda’s guidance for “Disconnected From Server” is to make sure its servers are operational on the status portal. Check it when the error occurs; status can change, so do not rely on an old report. Xbox and PlayStation players should also check the relevant platform’s network status. If a service is down or maintenance is underway, wait until it is restored and try again.

If the status pages show services are operational, continue with the checks for your platform. Bethesda’s support pages describe possible tests, not one cause or guaranteed fix for every disconnect.
Try basic connection checks
- Close and reopen Fallout 76. Fully exit the game, then launch it again.
- Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection. If you are on Wi-Fi, try Ethernet if available. If possible, test another network as well; this helps determine whether the problem is specific to your home connection.
- Restart your modem and router. Power them off, unplug them for a few minutes, then reconnect and wait for service to return before retrying.
Bethesda recommends connection checks such as these in its timeout troubleshooting guidance. A different result on Ethernet or another network is useful diagnostic information, not proof that one particular device is faulty.

PC: check Steam files and security settings
For the Steam version, close Fallout 76 and the Steam client before verifying the game files through Steam’s game properties. The exact Steam interface can change, but the verification option is found in the game’s installed-file settings. Also check that your firewall or antivirus is not blocking Fallout 76 or Steam. Allow the game and client through the security software you already use rather than disabling protection entirely.
Bethesda’s PC connection guidance lists TCP ports 80 and 443 and UDP ports 3000–3010 for router configuration. Treat port changes as an advanced, conditional step: router menus differ, and the listing does not mean every player needs to forward ports. Avoid broad forwarding or changing settings unless you understand the router controls and have a specific reason to test them.

The same Bethesda page notes that some internet providers assign a non-public IP by default and that changing router APN settings to use a public IP may be required in those cases. This depends on the provider and connection setup; contact your ISP if you suspect this applies rather than changing APN settings speculatively.
Xbox: run a network test and check for Double NAT
Check Xbox service status, then run the network connection test in the console’s network settings. If the network details report Double NAT, note that result when troubleshooting the router or contacting your ISP. Bethesda’s related Fallout 76 connection error guidance identifies Double NAT as a potential network issue to investigate; it is not a diagnosis for every disconnect.

PlayStation: run a network test and inspect NAT
Check PlayStation Network status and run the console’s internet connection test. If the NAT result is too strict, it may be relevant to connectivity. Router interfaces and available options vary, so use the test result as a clue rather than making unrelated router changes.

If Fallout 76 disconnects specifically when you interact with the Ammo Storage Box, Bethesda reported that issue resolved in an update on May 6, 2025.
