To troubleshoot it, save the complete log, check whether the failure lines up with a playlist transition, verify the current YouTube stream URL and key, inspect stream health and your outbound connection, then confirm the protocol and encoder settings. A loop boundary can be a clue, but no single FFmpeg flag is a universal fix.
What “Broken pipe” tells you—and what it doesn’t
FFmpeg maps EPIPE to “Broken pipe.” That describes a failed write, not why it happened. The receiving end may have closed the connection, the network may have failed, a local consumer may have exited, or another output problem may be involved. The first relevant error in the full log is more useful than later messages about muxing or writing a trailer, which may be consequences of the original failure. FFmpeg’s error mapping gives the label, not a root-cause diagnosis.
You may see a line such as av_interleaved_write_frame(): Broken pipe, sometimes alongside Error muxing a packet. An FFmpeg-user mailing-list post dated 20 October 2023 reports that error around a looped MP4’s repeat boundary. That report makes timing worth checking; it does not establish that -stream_loop or stream copy is generally defective. The individual report is evidence of one setup, not a universal explanation.
Start with the complete failure context
Capture the command and log
- Save the exact FFmpeg command, but remove or redact the stream key before sharing it.
- Record the output of
ffmpeg -version, including the build configuration. - Save all of FFmpeg’s stderr, from startup through the failure. Look for the first error and note the output URL scheme and muxer—for example, whether the output uses RTMP, RTMPS, or HLS.
- Note when the error occurs: immediately on connection, at a file or playlist transition, after a repeat boundary, or only after a long run.

Check whether the failure follows a loop or item transition
- Compare the log time with the end of the current playlist item and the start of the next one. For a single looping file, compare it with the end and restart of each pass.
- Test one source file by itself using the same output configuration.
- Then test the playlist or loop again. If only a transition coincides with failure, investigate the items’ stream parameters and timestamp continuity across the boundary.
If a single file fails too, prioritize the connection, destination URL and key, and encoder health rather than assuming the playlist transition is responsible. This isolation process narrows possibilities; it cannot guarantee that a particular adjustment will fix the stream.
Verify the YouTube destination and connection
Copy the current URL and stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the current Stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Do not substitute a URL from memory or guess one from an example. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends updating the encoder with the current stream key if a key may be stale or startup is rejected. Check stream health and outbound capacity
Review stream health in Live Control Room and verify that the encoder itself is operating as expected. YouTube also recommends checking the strength of the outbound internet connection. If the local encoded preview looks healthy but stream health or the viewer experience does not, investigate the upload path and whether your sustainable upload capacity can carry the configured stream. YouTube’s troubleshooting page covers these checks.
Confirm protocol before changing encoder settings
First establish which ingestion protocol your command actually uses. RTMP/RTMPS is continuous streaming; HLS sends a segmented playlist. Their URL schemes and protocol requirements are not interchangeable.

These are protocol-specific requirements, not alternative flags to try at random. YouTube documents the HLS constraints separately from its RTMP/RTMPS guidance. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance describes its playlist and segment requirements; YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance covers stream-health checks.
For RTMPS certificate errors or timeouts
If you choose RTMPS and see an SSL certificate error, YouTube advises checking the URL and trying port 443. If the connection times out, verify the URL and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. Use the current URL from Live Control Room rather than editing a guessed destination. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers these cases.

Validate the stream’s encoding settings
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); up to 60 frames per second; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so compare your configured bitrate with the applicable YouTube recommendation and your available upload capacity rather than using one universal bitrate. These are YouTube configuration recommendations, not proof that any particular setting caused a broken pipe. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance.
- Confirm the codec, audio format, bitrate mode, frame rate, resolution, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance for the protocol you selected.
- Check that the outbound connection can sustain the chosen bitrate; a brief speed test alone may not represent capacity throughout a long stream.
- If you are using HLS, validate its URL scheme, segment format, playlist behavior, and segment timing separately. Do not apply HLS-specific settings to an RTMP/RTMPS command.
Use the result to choose the next check
- Failure at startup: confirm the current URL and stream key, protocol support in the FFmpeg build, and any RTMPS certificate or timeout details.
- Failure at a repeat or item boundary: test one file, then the transition, and compare stream parameters and timestamps across the boundary.
- Failure unrelated to transitions: inspect YouTube stream health, encoder operation, outbound connection strength, and sustainable upload capacity.
- HLS playlist rejection or interruption: verify the HLS-specific rolling playlist, HTTPS URL, TS segments, outstanding-segment count, and one-to-four-second segment durations.
The exact failing command, FFmpeg version and build, output protocol, and surrounding log lines are needed to identify a particular root cause. Without them, treating “Broken pipe” as a diagnosis—or prescribing one flag as the fix—goes beyond what the error establishes.
