FFmpeg’s “Invalid DTS” warning is a timestamp-ordering problem, not a diagnosis—and it does not automatically mean the stream failed. The right fix depends on whether FFmpeg is reading a playlist or creating HLS for YouTube, what the input timestamps look like, and whether the command preserves them with -copyts. Start by identifying the direction of the workflow and checking packet timestamps; do not add a timestamp flag blindly.
What “Invalid DTS” means
DTS is the decoding timestamp; PTS is the presentation timestamp. They tell a media pipeline when packets should be decoded and shown. FFmpeg 9.0’s muxer source logs “Invalid DTS” when a packet’s DTS is later than its PTS, then substitutes a guessed timestamp. FFmpeg also handles non-monotonic DTS by adjusting timestamps during ordinary operation, with a warning that the resulting output timestamps may be incorrect. The warning therefore signals a timestamp issue worth investigating, but it does not by itself establish that output failed or that YouTube rejected the stream. FFmpeg 9.0 muxer source
First identify which playlist operation is failing
“YouTube Live playlist” can describe different directions of media flow. Determine which one applies before changing options:
- FFmpeg reads a playlist: an HLS manifest or its segments are input to FFmpeg for processing or playback.
- FFmpeg creates a playlist: FFmpeg writes HLS output, perhaps for another service or a local workflow.
- FFmpeg pushes HLS to YouTube: FFmpeg generates and uploads HLS for YouTube ingest.
Also establish whether the warning occurs during demuxing (reading input) or muxing (writing output), and whether the command copies streams with -c copy or decodes and re-encodes them. The cited “Invalid DTS” log is in mux-side timestamp fixup; do not assume it is evidence of an ingest rejection.

Collect the information needed to diagnose it
Before changing a working setup, save the original command and a short sample or copy of the affected playlist and segments. Capture:
- The complete FFmpeg command and output of
ffmpeg -version. - The full warning context, including the lines immediately before and after it.
- The exact input type: HLS manifest, local TS segments, or another container or protocol.
- Whether FFmpeg is reading, generating, or pushing HLS, and whether the streams are copied or re-encoded.
- The playlist and adjacent segments around the point where the warning begins.
Without those details, no single command can be identified as the fix: timestamp resets between concatenated segments and interactions between timestamp options are possibilities to test, not confirmed causes.

Inspect timestamps and test one change at a time
Compare packets across segment boundaries
Use FFprobe to inspect packet timestamps in the affected input and compare the end of one segment with the start of the next. For example, run ffprobe -v error -show_packets -show_entries packet=pts_time,dts_time,stream_index -of csv=p=0 input.ts on the relevant segment files. If the input is an HLS manifest, inspect the manifest and the neighboring segments it references as well. Look for timestamps that reset or jump at a boundary. This command is an inspection starting point, not a universal validator; adapt the input and fields to the actual container and workflow.
Review timestamp-preservation options
Check whether the command includes -copyts, -start_at_zero, -copytb, or discontinuity-related options. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation says -dts_delta_threshold correction applies to formats that accept timestamp discontinuities, including MPEG-TS and HLS; its documented default is 10 seconds. The same documentation says -copyts disables this automatic correction, except when timestamp wrapping is detected. FFmpeg command-line documentation

If preserving original timestamps was not intentional, a controlled baseline test without -copyts may be useful. Do not treat removing it—or adding -start_at_zero, -copytb, or -dts_delta_threshold—as a guaranteed correction. Change one option at a time on a short sample, compare fresh logs and playback with the original, and keep a known-good copy so the test is reversible.
If you are sending HLS to YouTube, check ingest rules separately
Correct HLS packaging and valid packet timestamps are separate checks. YouTube’s current HLS ingest guidance calls for:

- TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds.
- A rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- No byte-range mode.
- HTTPS POST/PUT requests.
Meeting those playlist and transport requirements does not prove the media timestamps are valid. Conversely, an FFmpeg DTS warning alone does not prove that the HLS playlist violates YouTube’s ingest rules. YouTube Help: HLS ingestion

FFmpeg’s HLS muxer can insert #EXT-X-DISCONTINUITY before a segment’s information. That marker can describe a genuine transition in a segment sequence; it is not a universal repair for bad DTS values. Consider it only if there is an actual discontinuity and your playlist-generation flow supports the marker, then inspect the resulting manifest and timestamps. FFmpeg formats documentation

Verify the fix in logs and playback
After each controlled change, check whether fresh FFmpeg logs still report the warning, whether the stream starts and remains healthy, and whether audio and video stay in sync. YouTube recommends testing streams and monitoring stream health. Its live encoder guidance recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds; these are encoder recommendations, not DTS repairs. YouTube Help: live encoder settings
Common troubleshooting branches
- The warning persists with stream copy: compare packet timestamps at adjacent input boundaries and review timestamp-preservation settings. Do not assume re-encoding is necessary until the sample identifies where the timestamps become invalid.
- The warning appears only with
-copyts: test a baseline without it if timestamp preservation was not required; FFmpeg documents that-copytsdisables its normal discontinuity correction for supported formats, with the timestamp-wrapping exception noted above. - The warning appears while writing, but playback seems normal: verify output logs, stream health, and audio/video sync. FFmpeg’s warning says timestamps may be incorrect; it is not proof of playback failure.
- YouTube does not accept the HLS stream: check the ingest requirements independently—segment duration and format, rolling playlist size, byte-range mode, and HTTPS method—rather than treating the DTS warning as the full diagnosis.
- A discontinuity marker is present or being considered: confirm that the segment sequence really has a discontinuity. The marker describes a transition; it does not repair arbitrary packet timestamp errors.
