Do not start by adding timestamp flags: a jump can come from FFmpeg’s input timeline or from YouTube ingest and playback, and the title alone cannot identify which.
Find out where the skip happens
Start with the specific transition: which video should play, which video appears instead, and whether the same transition fails every time? Most importantly, determine whether the intended clip is missing from FFmpeg’s output or only seems absent in YouTube playback.
- Save the full FFmpeg command and the playlist or manifest it reads.
- Record the FFmpeg version and capture log lines surrounding the transition.
- Use
ffprobeon the file before and after the skip. Compare stream count, codecs, time bases, frame rates, start times, and durations. - If possible, record or inspect FFmpeg’s output around the boundary. Compare that with the YouTube playback and Live Control Room stream-health messages.
If the clip is absent or the timestamps jump in FFmpeg’s output, investigate the input list, media compatibility, and durations. If FFmpeg’s output is continuous but YouTube playback jumps, check ingest health and encoder settings instead.
Confirm which playlist format you are using
“Playlist” can mean a text file for FFmpeg’s concat demuxer or an HLS M3U8 manifest. They are different inputs, so concat-demuxer advice does not automatically apply to an HLS stream. Check the command and the actual file being passed to FFmpeg before changing anything.

If it is a concat-demuxer script
- Check that each entry is present, in the intended order, and points to a file FFmpeg can read.
- If relying on automatic concat-script detection, the optional
ffconcat version 1.0header must be the exact first line. Do not put a byte-order mark, whitespace, or another line before it. - Verify that the clip you think is skipped is actually in the script; a correct rotation cannot play an entry that is missing or points to the wrong path.
If it is an HLS manifest
Do not treat an HLS .m3u8 manifest as a concat-demuxer script. Diagnose the actual HLS input and its segments using the command and logs; the concat demuxer’s file-order and duration rules are not a substitute for checking how that manifest is being read.
Check that concat inputs have compatible streams
The concat demuxer joins packets and offsets timestamps so each file follows the previous one. It expects corresponding streams to match, including codecs and time bases. Compare each playlist item’s video and audio streams, not just the filenames or extensions.

- Look for differences in stream count, codecs, time bases, frame rates, or whether audio is present.
- If layouts or encoding properties differ, make a consistent set of files before using the concat demuxer. For a static playlist, transcoding all files to common properties is one practical approach; it is not the only possible workflow in every case.
- After preparing consistent files, test the affected transition again and confirm the output contains the expected clip.
In a 2024 FFmpeg-user mailing-list reply about a static playlist of varied media, Oliver Fromme recommended transcoding the files to the same properties before using concat. That is practical advice for that situation; the formal compatibility requirement is documented by the FFmpeg Project.
Inspect durations and timestamps at the boundary
The concat demuxer uses each file’s duration to calculate the next file’s timestamps. FFmpeg’s documentation warns that an incorrect duration—for example, one inferred incorrectly from bitrate or affected by a truncated file—can cause artifacts.

- Identify the file immediately before the jump and compare its reported duration with its actual ending timestamp.
- Inspect the first timestamps of the next file. Check whether they follow the preceding file as expected or reveal a gap, overlap, or unexpected offset.
- If the reported duration is wrong, establish the correct duration before changing the playlist. The concat script supports a
durationdirective to override a file’s stored duration. - Retest the transition and check the resulting output; do not add a duration override based only on the fact that a skip occurred.
Because no command, media metadata, or logs are available here, there is no responsible single flag change to prescribe. The boundary measurements determine whether a duration correction is appropriate.
When FFmpeg output is continuous, check YouTube ingest
If the clip and timestamps are correct in FFmpeg’s output but playback on YouTube still jumps, inspect the stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room and review the encoder output. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video movement and monitoring stream health during the event.

- For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio.
- YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; it says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- These are ingest checks, not fixes for a malformed concat list, incompatible files, or incorrect source durations.
Common symptoms and what to check
