First identify which connection is failing: FFmpeg’s -reconnect options are for HTTP inputs, not a general fix for an RTMP/RTMPS output that has stopped writing to YouTube. For temporary output failures, FFmpeg documents a separate recovery approach using its FIFO muxer. Then verify YouTube’s stream key, encoder settings and available upload bandwidth. These steps can help diagnose and recover from some failures, but they cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream or seamless resumption.
Start by locating the failing connection
Read the FFmpeg command and the first meaningful error line before changing options. A typical command has one or more inputs introduced by -i and an output destination near the end. Determine whether the error concerns a source FFmpeg is reading or the YouTube destination FFmpeg is writing to.
- HTTP input failure: FFmpeg cannot keep reading a remote source, such as an internet radio feed. HTTP protocol reconnect options may apply to that input.
- RTMP or RTMPS output failure: FFmpeg cannot write the outgoing stream to YouTube. HTTP input reconnect options do not configure recovery for this output.
- FFmpeg process exit: The program has stopped running. A supervisor can restart the process, but restarting does not fix a bad input, stream key, encoder setting or unavailable ingest endpoint.
Keep a copy of the command with its secrets removed, the FFmpeg version and build information, timestamps, and the exact error lines. That makes it easier to distinguish an input disconnect from an output write failure or a process crash.
Reconnect an HTTP input
FFmpeg documents these options in its HTTP protocol documentation. They govern HTTP input behavior; they are not generic network-retry switches for every output protocol. Check that your installed FFmpeg build supports the options you intend to use, and apply them to the input they are meant to control.

Use only the options that match the input’s failure mode. If the HTTP source has genuinely ended, retrying at EOF may be appropriate; if the source is a seekable file or a different protocol, HTTP reconnect flags will not solve the underlying problem.
Attempt recovery after an RTMP output failure
For temporary output failures, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation describes an RTMP example using -f fifo -fifo_format flv -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1. The FIFO muxer is intended to let processing continue and attempt output recovery after a temporary failure.

Treat that documented example as a starting point to adapt and validate, not a universal command to paste unchanged. Its suitability depends on your source, FFmpeg build and YouTube ingest configuration. The documentation does not promise seamless continuity for every setup, and it does not quantify how much media a particular radio stream might buffer or drop during recovery.
If the output still fails, use the error line to check whether the issue is a refused or disconnected connection, an invalid destination, or an encoder or muxing problem. Adding HTTP input options to an RTMP output does not address those causes.

Verify YouTube’s ingest configuration
Confirm the server URL and stream key
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streaming. Confirm that your encoder uses the intended YouTube stream URL and the current stream key; YouTube describes the key as the credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Its encoder setup guidance covers setting up an encoder connection.
Do not put a stream key in a public command, screenshot or log. If the key may be stale or compromised, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. Resetting the key without updating FFmpeg will leave it trying to use the old credential. See YouTube’s stream-key management instructions.

Check YouTube’s error messages
Read the message in Live Control Room as well as FFmpeg’s output. YouTube’s stream error guide identifies issues such as unsupported codecs and incorrect bitrates. Those are different from a transient connection drop and will not be fixed by retrying the output.

YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For bitrate, use YouTube’s current table for your chosen resolution rather than an old fixed recommendation.

Compare the total outgoing bitrate with the upload bandwidth available to the streaming connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of bandwidth in reserve, counting both primary and backup stream bitrates where applicable. If the connection cannot sustain the selected resolution and bitrate, reduce the bitrate or resolution and test again. YouTube’s network tips warn that connectivity disruption can break a stream.
Restarting FFmpeg is not the same as recovering the stream
If FFmpeg exits, a process supervisor can relaunch it; a VPS may be one way to keep that process under supervision. This is an operational measure, not a repair for invalid inputs, credentials, incompatible settings or an unavailable YouTube ingest endpoint. Restart behavior and the resulting stream interruption depend on your environment, so verify them rather than assuming a relaunch will resume the existing broadcast.
Retest and monitor the broadcast
- Make one relevant change at a time: input retry options for an HTTP source, FIFO recovery for a temporary output failure, or a correction to the YouTube connection or encoder settings.
- Test before relying on the stream. YouTube advises testing the setup and monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast in its encoder guidance.
- When a failure recurs, record the timestamp, FFmpeg version/build and exact error lines, with stream keys and other credentials redacted.
- If the error points to bandwidth or an unstable connection, retest at a lower bitrate or resolution with upload headroom. If it points to a key or codec, correct that issue instead of increasing retry limits.
