FFmpeg’s reconnect flags can help when a continuous HTTP input disconnects, but they do not fix every interruption. First find out whether the failure is on the input, during processing, on the connection to YouTube, or because FFmpeg has exited. Then apply the remedy for that stage: HTTP reconnect options only govern HTTP input, while YouTube ingest problems, expired URLs, copyright interruptions, and a stopped process need different fixes.
Start by finding where the stream fails
Before changing flags, save the full FFmpeg command and a timestamped log that covers startup through the failure. Note the input protocol, whether the input URL is temporary or expires, what FFmpeg reports immediately before the interruption, and whether the process is still running, has exited, or reports a successful exit. The word “reconnect” in an error message alone does not identify the cause.
| What you observe | Where to investigate |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports an error while reading an HTTP or HTTPS source | HTTP input connectivity, HTTP response errors, EOF behavior, or an expired input URL. |
| The input continues, but YouTube stops receiving the stream | The RTMP/RTMPS output address and stream key, outbound connection and bandwidth, and YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages. |
| FFmpeg exits | The exit reason and any surrounding system or input failure. Input reconnect flags cannot restart a process that is no longer running. |
| FFmpeg appears to keep sending, but YouTube interrupts or restricts the live | YouTube’s stream-health status and any live-content or copyright notices. A functioning encoder does not resolve a rights or platform action. |
Keep the stream key private when saving or sharing logs and commands. Redact it, along with any private or temporary input URLs, before posting diagnostic output publicly.
Use the right FFmpeg reconnect option for an HTTP input
FFmpeg documents the reconnect controls below for its HTTP protocol. They are input-side options: place them before the HTTP input they govern. They are not universal retries for every protocol, and they do not repair an RTMP/RTMPS output connection.

| Option | What it addresses | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
-reconnect 1 |
Reconnect after a disconnect before the input reaches EOF. | An HTTP source disconnects unexpectedly before ending. |
-reconnect_streamed 1 |
Reconnect for streamed or non-seekable HTTP inputs. | The HTTP source is streamed and cannot be sought like an ordinary file. |
-reconnect_at_eof 1 |
Treat EOF as an error and reconnect instead of treating it as a normal end. | An endless or live HTTP source reaches EOF but should be requested again. |
This minimal pattern illustrates option placement; it is not a tested production command or a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming:
ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_at_eof 1 -i "HTTP_INPUT_URL" [output options] "OUTPUT"
Use -reconnect_at_eof 1 only if reaching EOF should trigger another request for that input. For a finite file, EOF normally means the file has ended; reconnecting at EOF may not produce the looping behavior you intend. Handle playlist or file looping deliberately rather than assuming this flag makes any source repeat.
Check what your installed build supports
FFmpeg version and build affect the options available. Run ffmpeg -h protocol=http on the machine that runs the stream and check the supported HTTP options there before changing the command. HTTP network-error and HTTP-status retry controls are separate from the three options above; choose an appropriate bounded retry policy for the failure you actually see, rather than leaving retries unlimited by default or assuming one setting covers every error.

Do not apply HTTP flags to a different input protocol
If the source is RTSP, a local file, or another protocol, HTTP-specific reconnect options may not apply. Identify the input protocol from the command and its logs, then consult the documentation for that protocol and the installed FFmpeg build. If the input is stable and the YouTube output drops, changing HTTP input flags is aimed at the wrong leg.

When YouTube output fails, check ingest rather than input retries
If FFmpeg keeps reading and processing the source but YouTube loses the feed, inspect the output side separately. Confirm the RTMP or RTMPS ingest address and stream key in your encoder configuration, and check YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health messages. Do not include a real stream key in a public command example, screenshot, or log.
- Use an ingest protocol and codec combination supported by YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance.
- Match resolution and bitrate to the output you have selected; use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance rather than applying one bitrate to every resolution.
- YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Check the encoder’s keyframe or GOP setting against that requirement.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its network streaming tips also recommend leaving 20% bandwidth room; this is guidance, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable.
- Test the stream, monitor stream health while it runs, and test your failover plan rather than assuming it will work during an outage.
If you change output settings, change them to match the chosen resolution, bitrate, codec, and available upload capacity. A retry cannot compensate for insufficient outbound bandwidth or an incorrect ingest configuration.

Check for expired sources, normal EOF, and music-rights interruptions
Temporary or expired input URLs
A source URL that expires or requires refreshed authorization cannot be made permanent by reconnecting to the same stale address. Check whether the provider issued a new URL or requires a fresh login or token, then update the input. If the log shows an HTTP status error, use ffmpeg -h protocol=http to see which HTTP-status retry controls your build supports, but first establish whether retrying that status can help; repeating a request to an expired resource will not renew its authorization.
EOF may mean the input really ended
For an endless source, treating EOF as an error may be appropriate. For a completed file or finite playlist, EOF may be expected. Decide whether the source should end, repeat, or be replaced, then configure that behavior explicitly. Do not use EOF reconnection as a substitute for checking why the source ended.
Copyright and live-content matching
YouTube checks live streams for third-party content matches. A music stream can be interrupted or restricted even when FFmpeg is working correctly. Review the notice in YouTube Live Control Room and resolve the rights issue with the relevant rights holder or platform process; encoder retries cannot clear a content match. YouTube describes live matching and allowlisting for licensed third-party content in its copyright guidance for live streams. Do not assume that owning a recording or having permission automatically means a channel has been allowlisted where that is required.

If FFmpeg exits, use a separate restart strategy
Reconnect options operate while FFmpeg is running. If it has exited, save the final log lines and determine why before arranging a restart. An external process supervisor can restart a terminated process, but that is separate from FFmpeg’s HTTP retry behavior. Set a safe restart policy based on the failure you have identified, and verify that restarting will not create duplicate or conflicting YouTube sessions. No supervisor configuration is universal across operating systems or hosting setups, so use the documentation for the supervisor and environment you actually run.
Plan the 24/7 stream around YouTube’s event limits
A continuously running channel has operational concerns beyond reconnects. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not promise one uninterrupted full archive for an event longer than that. If you need complete retention of a longer broadcast, plan and verify local recording and event handling separately rather than relying on a single continuous YouTube archive.
Also test the recovery path before leaving a music stream unattended: simulate or safely observe an input interruption, an output interruption, and a process exit where practical, and confirm what the logs and Live Control Room show. Keep the stream key secure and keep a separate recording if retaining the full program matters.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded music videos looping on YouTube without maintaining an FFmpeg machine at home, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: it keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos, with any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and the first day is free.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home, including your computer or internet connection. Uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, but it cannot resolve a copyright restriction or make an expired input URL valid. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
