There is no single FFmpeg flag that reliably fixes every “Non-monotonous DTS” warning or glitch at a playlist boundary. First check the concat input’s stream compatibility and file durations: FFmpeg’s concat demuxer estimates where each file ends, then shifts the next file’s timestamps to follow it. A bad duration or mismatched streams can therefore cause artifacts even when the playlist loops as intended.
Find where the timestamp problem begins
Save the complete FFmpeg log and note the first error or visible glitch. Does it happen when the playlist moves from one clip to the next, or only when it returns from the final clip to the first? That distinction points you toward the relevant boundary, but the message alone does not identify the cause.
- Check the playlist’s file paths and order against the files you intend to stream.
- Identify the first boundary where the log reports a problem or playback changes unexpectedly.
- Compare the files on both sides of that boundary, then inspect the remaining clips for the same issues.
- Test the joined sequence locally before adding YouTube ingest to the diagnosis.
Check concat compatibility and file durations
The concat demuxer reads packets from the listed files in sequence. It shifts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and positions later files according to the preceding file’s estimated duration. FFmpeg’s documentation says the files should have the same streams, codecs, and time base. If those assumptions do not hold, or a duration is wrong, artifacts can result. Unequal audio and video stream lengths can also introduce gaps.
Compare each clip’s streams
For each file—especially the last clip and the first clip at the loop boundary—check the number of streams, codecs, time bases, frame rates, audio formats, and reported durations. Look for missing or extra audio or video streams, differing parameters, and damaged or truncated files.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Correct inputs before rewriting timestamps
- Fix incorrect playlist paths or order, and replace or repair truncated or damaged media.
- If a file’s reported duration is demonstrably wrong and you know its correct duration independently, the concat script supports a
durationdirective for that file. Do not guess a duration to silence a warning. - If the files do not meet concat’s stream compatibility requirements, normalize them into matching intermediate files or transcode the set to consistent properties.
-c copycopies encoded packets; it does not make different source streams equivalent.
Set up a looping, real-time concat input
A typical concat-demuxer setup uses an ffconcat text file with one file directive per clip, then supplies that file to FFmpeg with -f concat -i playlist.ffconcat. For a file-based live output, -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely, while -re reads it at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. These options handle repetition and pacing; they do not fix stream mismatches or incorrect durations.
Place input-scoped options before the input they apply to. A schematic input section looks like this:

The ellipsis is where your output and encoder options belong; it is not a complete YouTube command. Choose those options for your actual output format and follow YouTube’s current encoder settings rather than copying an arbitrary bitrate. Keep the stream key out of shared commands, logs, screenshots, and public repositories.
Choose stream copy or re-encoding
| Approach | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stream copy | The clips have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases, and their durations are accurate. | Uses fewer resources, but does not normalize mismatched sources. |
| Re-encoding | The clips differ and need consistent output properties, or stream copy cannot produce a clean joined sequence. | Consumes CPU continuously and may reduce quality if configured poorly. |
Before committing to continuous encoding, check your available CPU capacity and test synchronization and picture quality through clip transitions. A clean local join is the useful baseline for separating input problems from live-ingest problems.

Change timestamps only for a diagnosed reason
FFmpeg’s setts bitstream filter can assign expressions to PTS, DTS, packet duration, or time base. Its documentation describes the mechanics; it does not provide a universal repair recipe. In particular, setting PTS equal to DTS is labeled not recommended when B-frames are involved.
Avoid applying -copyts, -copytb, -fflags +genpts, or -avoid_negative_ts as generic fixes. The appropriate behavior depends on the demuxer, codecs, time base, and whether the stream is copied or encoded. After any targeted timestamp change, check audio/video sync and playback across the affected boundary, then review the full log again.

Do not rely on the historical -force_dts_monotonicity option from a 2018 FFmpeg development-list patch as a current supported fix. That post described a proposed patch and noted that interactions with other flags had not been fully analyzed. Check the help and documentation for the FFmpeg release you have installed before using an option.
Check YouTube Live separately
A clean local concat does not prove that YouTube is receiving a valid stream; YouTube ingest settings do not repair bad local timestamps. Treat them as separate diagnostic branches.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, codec, and frame rate, so select the value for your actual output from YouTube’s current table rather than using one generic bitrate.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance to choose compatible output parameters for your resolution, codec, and frame rate.
- In your encoder, enter the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s encoder setup. Treat the key like a password.
- Test the stream and monitor its health in Live Control Room. Use the specific messages there to investigate ingest issues separately from local concat errors.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Glitch or timestamp error at a particular clip transition | Stream layout, codec parameters, time base, or duration for the files on either side | Compare those files, confirm their durations, then normalize or transcode incompatible inputs. |
| Gap between audio and video at a boundary | Unequal stream lengths or incorrect duration estimates | Inspect audio and video durations independently; correct the source or use a known, accurate concat duration. |
| Problem only when the sequence returns to its first clip | The final-to-first boundary, including the last and first files’ compatibility and durations | Test that transition locally and inspect both files as well as the complete loop. |
| Local sequence plays correctly but YouTube reports a stream problem | Output encoding, server URL, stream key, or YouTube ingest health | Check the current encoder requirements and Live Control Room messages without changing local timestamps blindly. |
| Warning persists after a timestamp option is added | The underlying stream or timing assumptions may still be wrong | Revisit the inputs and the full log; verify synchronization and boundary playback after every change. |
