On a Minecraft Java server you administer, set allow-flight=true in server.properties, save the file, and fully restart the server. If you are a player without server access, ask the owner or administrator to make that change. It stops the vanilla flight check from kicking players; it does not give everyone Creative flight or permission to use a plugin’s /fly command.
What causes the “Flying Is Not Enabled” message?
Paper’s legacy configuration documentation lists “Flying is not enabled on this server.” as the default kick message for a flying player and for a flying vehicle. The message is associated with the server’s flight-kick configuration, though it may not identify the component responsible if the server uses plugins. Paper’s configuration reference describes those messages.
A server with flight disabled can also reject movement that is legitimate rather than cheating. Elytra gliding, modded flight items such as jetpacks or gliders, and unusually fast movement are possible triggers. The exact cause depends on the server and the movement involved.
How to enable flight on a Java server
- Open the server configuration. In the server’s files, open
server.properties. With a hosting provider, use its game settings or control panel if it exposes an “Allow Flight” option. - Change the property. Set
allow-flight=true. The property is Boolean and defaults tofalse, according to the SpigotMC server properties reference. - Save and fully restart the server. A restart makes the running server load the changed setting.
- Test the movement that caused the kick. Try the elytra, mod, or other movement involved and check whether the message returns.
If you are not the server owner or administrator, you cannot change this server-side setting from your client. Send the administrator the exact property: allow-flight=true.
What does allow-flight change—and what doesn’t it change?
The SpigotMC reference says allow-flight controls whether the vanilla flight check watches for flying players. Setting it to true disables that check. It does not itself grant ordinary players Creative-mode flight, change permissions, or authorize a plugin’s flight command.
Disabling the vanilla check also removes one anti-cheat safeguard. If you allow flight for elytra or modded movement, consider whether your server needs other anti-cheat measures or permission controls. The appropriate setup depends on the server’s plugins and rules.

Still getting kicked after changing the setting?
- Confirm the change took effect. Check that the property is spelled
allow-flight, set totrue, saved in the correct server’s configuration, and followed by a full restart. - Check the console and logs. If the same kick continues, determine whether a plugin is issuing it. On Paper or Spigot, review the responsible plugin’s flight or movement settings and follow that plugin’s documentation. There is no single movement threshold that applies to every plugin.
- Account for the movement involved. Reproduce the issue using the same elytra, modded item, or other movement. These are possible causes, not a guarantee that every kick has the same explanation.
- Consider a narrow historical bug only if it fits. Mojang tracked a specific issue in which a zero-gravity attribute caused a flight kick when
allow-flight=false. It affected snapshots 24w06a, 24w07a, and 24w09a, with 24w10a listed as the fix version. This is a version-specific historical case, not a general explanation for current builds. Mojang’s issue record lists the affected snapshots and fix version.
Does this fix apply to Bedrock servers?
The steps above are for Minecraft Java servers using server.properties. The cited configuration information does not establish an equivalent Bedrock setting, so do not assume that changing this Java property will fix a Bedrock server.
