Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst check Epic Games’ status page for a Fortnite matchmaking outage. If matchmaking is degraded or disabled for maintenance, wait for Epic to restore service; restarting your router or changing settings will not fix a server-side problem. If service is available, restart Fortnite and work through the steps below, using the exact error message and your platform to choose the right branch.
Start with the exact error and Epic’s service status
- Write down the full error code and message, and note whether it appears while entering a match or joining a party. These are different problems and can have different fixes.
- Check Epic Games’ live status page for Fortnite matchmaking. If the service is affected, wait and try again after Epic reports it is available.
- If status is normal, close and restart Fortnite, then try matchmaking again.
Epic’s guidance groups matchmaking errors #1, #2, and #3 among issues that can stem from maintenance or a network connection problem, but the messages are not interchangeable:

- Error #1: Fortnite failed to connect you to a match.
- Error #2: This can indicate a problem connecting to the content beacon service. Epic also documents a separate #2 message about lacking permission to play tournament content. If your message is about tournament access, check the tournament’s eligibility requirements; treat it as an access issue, not a connection diagnosis. See Epic’s guidance for matchmaking errors #1, #2, and #3.
- Error #3: The message says the Battle Buses are full and advises trying again in a few minutes.
For error #5, Epic says Fortnite cannot connect you to a match, usually because of a server or network connection issue. Check status, wait if matchmaking is affected, and restart Fortnite before using the connection steps below. Epic’s article title also mentions error #7, but its explanation specifically describes #5; it does not establish a separate cause or fix for #7. See Epic’s error #5/#7 article.
If there is no reported outage, try basic connection fixes
Use these low-risk checks before changing network settings. Restarting a device or router can interrupt other people’s connections, so do it when that is acceptable in your household.

- Redeemable on accounts in the United States and in U.S. Dollars.
- Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
- If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
- Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
- Redemption: Online
- Restart Fortnite and test matchmaking again.
- Restart your gaming device. Also restart your modem and router, following their normal shutdown and startup process, then reconnect and test again.
- Check that your device’s date and time are correct and synchronized. This is especially relevant to party errors 83 and 86, described below.
- If the problem remains, follow Epic’s connection troubleshooting guide. Depending on your platform and the symptoms, its further checks include public DNS, clearing cache, proxy settings, flushing DNS on Windows, firewall or background applications, and other platform-specific network steps.
Do not treat DNS changes or port configuration as mandatory first steps: they are later troubleshooting options, and the applicable instructions depend on your device and network. If Epic’s steps do not resolve the problem, consult the device or platform manufacturer’s support guidance.
Fix party-join errors separately
Party error -91
Start by checking Epic’s service status. If no service issue is reported, use the branch for your platform:

- PC: Verify Fortnite’s game files using the platform-specific instructions linked from Epic’s error -91 article.
- Console: Clear the platform cache using the relevant instructions. PlayStation and Xbox players should also check that crossplay is enabled.
- Console network: NAT type may need attention. Use the platform’s official guidance rather than guessing at router-menu settings.
After those checks, restart your router and device. Epic’s article links to platform-specific instructions for the steps; use those rather than applying generic menus or settings that may not match your hardware.
Party errors 83 and 86
These party-join errors call for correcting or synchronizing the device clock. Epic provides platform-specific directions: enable automatic date and time and sync on Windows; set date and time on PlayStation or Xbox; or choose “Synchronize Clock via Internet” on Nintendo Switch. The exact menu wording can change with platform software updates, so consult Epic’s error 83/86 guidance and your current device settings. If the error persists after the clock is corrected, continue with Epic’s general connection troubleshooting guide.
Rank #3
- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
When the error still appears
Before escalating, keep the exact code and message, your platform, and whether the issue affects matchmaking, party joining, or both. This helps distinguish a service-side problem from an account or tournament-access message, a platform-specific party issue, or a local connection fault. Recheck Epic’s live status if the problem began suddenly, then follow the support path for the particular error rather than repeating unrelated network changes.
