The right fix depends on where you bought it and whether the problem is availability, payment, delivery, or a refund.
Start with the purchase channel and the stage that failed
Identify where you tried to buy the item: Fortnite’s in-game or web Item Shop, Epic Games Store, PlayStation Store, Xbox/Microsoft Store, Nintendo eShop, or another platform store. Note the exact error and whether you are dealing with an unavailable listing, a declined payment, a charge without delivery, or a purchase you want to undo.
This distinction matters because a platform-store purchase or refund is handled through that seller’s process, not automatically by Epic. Epic’s Item Shop refund guidance and End User License Agreement distinguish Epic purchases from transactions made through third-party platforms.
If the Item Shop listing will not let you buy an outfit
A web Item Shop error can mean the cosmetic is no longer available, even if it still appears in search. Reload the page and search again from the main Item Shop page. Check the bottom of the listing for its end date. The shop rotates; if the item has left availability, it may return, but there is no guaranteed return date. If the listing remains available but the same error persists, keep the exact error text and the item name. Do not assume a card or network fault: Epic’s guidance identifies item availability as one possible cause for these web-shop errors, not a universal diagnosis for all Fortnite purchases.
If V-Bucks or an item is missing after purchase
- Refresh the game. Restart Fortnite and check the balance again.
- Use the purchasing platform and account. Sign in on the platform where you made the purchase. Compare the Epic account ID in your profile with the account that completed the transaction; a different linked account can make the purchase appear to be missing.
- Check the balance type. Some V-Bucks balances are platform-specific rather than part of the shared balance. Check the platform-specific balance as well.
- Look for a transaction record. Check the relevant store’s transaction history. If no transaction record exists, Epic says the transaction did not go through; check with your bank or payment provider before attempting the purchase again.
- Contact the seller if the purchase is still absent. For a PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo purchase, contact that platform’s support. For an Epic Games Store purchase, send Epic a support request with the order number, amount, and platform. A V-Bucks card must be redeemed separately.
Epic’s missing V-Bucks guidance covers account, platform, and transaction-history checks. For a purchase made on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or Samsung that is not visible in Fortnite, Epic says to verify the Epic account and device date and time, then allow up to two hours for it to appear. Epic also suggests reinstalling the game from the account that made the purchase to help verify which account is in use. If it remains missing, contact the platform’s support team. If payment is declined or the Epic Store reports a network error
“Transaction declined for your protection”
For this specific Epic Games Store or Fortnite Crew message, check that the payment details are correct, the payment method is active, and sufficient funds are available. Epic advises waiting at least 24 hours before trying again. If the problem continues, try another payment method or ask the bank or payment provider about the attempted charge. These steps apply to the matching decline message; they do not explain every Item Shop error. Epic’s transaction-declined guidance has the details.
“An error occurred while trying to process your request. Please check your network connection and try again”
For this documented Epic Games Store error, Epic advises restarting the router or modem and the device, then trying again. If it persists, try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. This is a remedy for that specific Epic Store network message, not a general diagnosis for failed Fortnite cosmetic purchases. See Epic’s network connection error guidance.

If you want to cancel or return an Item Shop purchase
Cancel a recent, unused purchase
Epic says Cancel Purchase can undo most eligible Item Shop purchases made with V-Bucks within 24 hours, provided the item has not been used or equipped in a game mode. Open the in-game or web Item Shop return screen, select the purchase, and check its eligibility before confirming. As Epic Games Support puts it, “You can use Cancel Purchase to cancel or undo a Fortnite Item Shop purchase made with V-Bucks if it was bought by mistake.”
Use a Return Ticket for an eligible older purchase
If Cancel Purchase is no longer available, a Return Ticket may cover an eligible purchase made within the last 30 days. Epic’s help page says accounts start with three tickets, gain one every 365 days, and can hold up to three. Bundles must be returned together. Eligibility is limited: Epic lists passes, pass levels, premium reward tracks, gifts, Level Up Quest Packs, certain Save the World items, and developer-made island purchases among exclusions. Battle Pass-earned rewards cannot be returned with Cancel Purchase or a Return Ticket; an error saying the item and V-Bucks were unchanged may indicate ineligibility. Check Epic’s return-error guidance and full cancellation and return rules before confirming.

If refunded V-Bucks have not appeared
Epic says V-Bucks from a cosmetic refund usually return within a few minutes. Refresh the Item Shop balance, make sure you are checking the account on which the refund was processed, check for a platform-specific balance, and restart Fortnite. Contact the seller that processed the payment and provide the details needed to locate it. For an Epic Games Store purchase, Epic specifically asks for the order number, amount, and platform. For console purchases, contact the platform if the content remains missing after the account, time-setting, and waiting checks. Include the exact error message and the Epic account ID you checked; never share your password or full payment-card details.
