Fortnite’s “Something went wrong” payment message is a generic symptom, not one error with one permanent fix. Stop retrying first; then check whether the item is still for sale, whether Epic’s payment services are working, and whether the purchase is being processed by Epic or by a console or mobile store. If Epic says purchases are blocked—or the message says the transaction was declined for your protection—Epic advises waiting 24 hours before trying again.

Identify which error you have

The wording and where you were buying matter. Epic documents several different problems that can look similar, and the right support team depends on who processed the payment.

What you see What it may indicate First step
“Something went wrong. We were not able to complete this transaction, please try again later” while buying an Item Shop listing on the web The item may no longer be purchasable even if it remains searchable. Open the listing and check its availability or end date before troubleshooting your card. Epic’s Item Shop guidance
“For your protection, this transaction has been declined” A payment-security block, bank restriction, or inconsistent payment details may be involved. Stop attempts, verify the details and funds, and follow Epic’s 24-hour wait guidance. Epic’s protection-decline guidance
Epic explicitly says purchases are blocked Epic may have applied a security block after repeated failed attempts or unusual activity. Do not keep checking out. Epic says most purchase blocks resolve after 24 hours. Epic’s purchase-block guidance
The purchase fails only on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or a mobile store The platform’s billing, account, wallet, or family settings may control the transaction. Check the platform account and contact its support if it processed the payment. Epic explains platform purchase routing
On Android, “Something went wrong” or “Invalid Client” appears at login rather than checkout This is a separate login issue, which Epic associates with an unofficial or outdated Epic Games Store app. Use the official Android installation route and Epic’s Android login instructions; this is not a general payment fix.

Use this safe troubleshooting order

  1. Stop making checkout attempts. If you have already tried several times, seen a protection decline, or received a purchase-block message, take a screenshot and note the time of your last attempt. Repeated failures can trigger a purchase block, and further attempts may create more bank authorizations or make it harder to tell whether a purchase went through. Epic says to wait 24 hours for purchase blocks and protection-related declines; that is guidance, not a guarantee.
  2. Check Epic’s live service status. Visit Epic Games Public Status and inspect Fortnite, Fortnite Item Shop, Fortnite Crew, Epic Games Store purchasing/refunding, and Payment Process. These are tracked separately, so Fortnite being operational does not by itself establish that payments are working. Status changes over time; check during the failure rather than relying on an old status.
  3. Confirm the item is available. If only one cosmetic or offer fails, inspect its full listing and availability or end date. On the web Item Shop, a listing can remain searchable after it is no longer purchasable. If it has expired, changing cards will not bring it back.
  4. Check account and payment restrictions. Review the billing checklist below, your account country, VPN or proxy use, parental controls, spending limits, and whether the account is a Cabined Account. During any security-block wait, these checks are useful; attempting checkout again is not.
  5. If buying through Epic, refresh the saved payment method. In your Epic account’s payment-management area, remove the saved method and enter it again carefully. Labels can change, so look for payment methods or saved payment method rather than relying on a fixed menu name. Sign out and back in if the checkout session appears stuck, then retry only once after any applicable wait and after confirming the information. Epic recommends removing a saved method for a declined purchase.
  6. Ask the bank or payment provider about a decline. Once Epic-side information is correct and any recommended wait has passed, ask whether the transaction was blocked for fraud, online gaming, international processing, recurring billing, insufficient funds, or a required approval in the bank’s app. Epic also recommends contacting the provider when an active method still fails.
  7. Escalate to the company that processed the transaction. Use Epic Player Support for direct Epic billing or an Epic purchase block that remains after the wait. For a platform-processed purchase, contact that platform’s billing support.

Check your billing details and account country

Enter payment details as the issuer has them on file. Epic identifies a billing-address mismatch as a common payment-method setup problem and advises checking the cardholder name, expiration date, and CVV as well.

  • Card number, expiration date, and security code.
  • Name on the card, billing street address, and ZIP or postal code.
  • Available funds or credit, and whether the card is locked or permits online, gaming, international, or recurring transactions.
  • Whether the bank requires a confirmation in its app or has sent a fraud alert.

Your Epic account country, billing country, payment method, and actual location should not conflict. Turn off a VPN or proxy before using or adding a payment method. Do not enter a false address, use a VPN to bypass regional rules, or change countries just to obtain another currency. Epic restricts country changes: its guidance says they are generally limited to once every six months, with conditions that can include access to the registered email, an account balance below $10 USD or equivalent, and possible forfeiture of Epic Rewards. Check Epic’s country-change rules before requesting a change.

Fortnite eGift Card
  • Redeemable on accounts in the United States and in U.S. Dollars.
  • Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
  • If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
  • Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
  • Redemption: Online

Check child-account and family spending controls

A purchase can fail even when the card is valid if the account or platform prevents spending. Epic notes that parental-control spending limits can block purchases and that Cabined Accounts may have limited features. A parent or account owner should review Epic parental controls, console or mobile family settings, spending limits, and any cardholder restrictions. Do not work around age or parental controls with another account or payment route.

Match the fix to where you are buying

Epic Games Store or a purchase processed directly by Epic

Use Epic’s payment troubleshooting: check the live status page, account country, VPN or proxy, billing details, and saved payment method. If a protection decline or purchase block appeared, wait the advised 24 hours before a single retry. Contact the bank if it rejected the transaction; contact Epic if an Epic-side block remains.

Fortnite web Item Shop

First check that the item is still available. If it is available and the transaction is processed by Epic, continue with the Epic payment checks. A stale searchable listing is not evidence that the item can still be bought.

PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch

Check the console account’s payment method, wallet balance, region, family settings, and store transaction history. When the console store processed the purchase, contact its support for billing or refund issues; Epic says it cannot directly refund purchases made through Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox, or Nintendo Switch. Epic’s billing guidance explains this distinction.

Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Android

Separate a checkout decline from a login message. If “Something went wrong” or “Invalid Client” appears while logging in, Epic’s documented remedy is to uninstall an unofficial or outdated Epic Games Store app and install the official app from its Android Fortnite page. That advice applies to the Android login issue, not to a declined card or a purchase processed by another mobile store.

If you see a charge but did not receive the purchase

Do not buy again until you know whether the bank entry is pending or completed. A pending authorization or temporary hold is different from a settled charge; a failed transaction may reverse, while a completed charge with missing V-Bucks or content needs support. Check the Epic or platform transaction history and your in-game balance first.

If a transaction appears duplicated, Epic advises checking again after 24 hours; if the duplicate remains, submit a support request. Epic’s duplicate-charge guidance covers Epic Games Store purchases. Refund processing can take up to 30 business days depending on payment method, according to Epic’s refund information. For a platform purchase, ask that platform about its transaction and refund process.
