If a game’s Frame Generation option is greyed out, first check that the game supports the feature and that it is using an eligible GPU. Native DLSS Frame Generation requires an RTX 40-series or RTX 50-series GPU; Multi Frame Generation is for RTX 50-series GPUs. Then enable Windows Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS), update the game and NVIDIA software, and check the game’s renderer and settings. These steps address common blockers, but no Windows or driver setting can add native support to a game that does not implement it.

Identify which Frame Generation setting is disabled

“Frame Generation” can refer to several different features, and their requirements are not interchangeable:

  • DLSS Frame Generation (FG): The game-integrated NVIDIA feature available on RTX 40- and RTX 50-series GPUs in supported games. NVIDIA describes it as generating additional frames, with Reflex used to help manage responsiveness. NVIDIA’s DLSS overview explains the feature family.
  • DLSS Multi Frame Generation (MFG): An RTX 50-series feature that generates multiple additional frames per traditionally rendered frame in supported implementations. It is not the same setting as ordinary FG, and an RTX 50 card alone does not make it available in every game.
  • NVIDIA App DLSS overrides: Per-game driver settings that can change supported DLSS behavior, such as an FG model or MFG mode. They depend on a compatible title and software versions; they are not a universal way to add FG to an unsupported game.
  • NVIDIA Smooth Motion: A separate driver-based option intended for compatible games without native DLSS FG. It is not native DLSS FG and should not be enabled alongside it.
  • A game’s generic Frame Generation option: The game may offer AMD FSR, Intel XeSS, or another implementation rather than NVIDIA DLSS. Check the label and the game’s documentation before applying DLSS-specific fixes.

Check whether your GPU supports the feature

For NVIDIA’s native DLSS Frame Generation, RTX 40 or newer is the key hardware threshold in NVIDIA’s documented integration requirements. RTX 20- and RTX 30-series cards can use DLSS Super Resolution in supported games, but they cannot use native DLSS 3 Frame Generation. RTX 50 adds MFG, subject to game and software support. See NVIDIA’s Streamline integration requirements and its DLSS feature overview.

RTX 40 series Yes, in supported games No RTX 50-only MFG modes Available with compatible NVIDIA App and driver support

GTX or non-RTX GPU No No No

Game implementation, driver and operating-system support still apply to every row. NVIDIA’s supported games and applications list is a useful way to check title support. If your card is below RTX 40 and the greyed-out control is specifically native NVIDIA DLSS FG, normal settings changes will not unlock it.

Enable HAGS in Windows

NVIDIA lists Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) as a requirement for its documented DLSS Frame Generation integration. The setting is available in current Windows graphics settings, though wording can vary by Windows build. Turn it on and restart Windows before retesting.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Display.
  3. Open Graphics.
  4. Select Change default graphics settings.
  5. Turn on Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
  6. Restart Windows, then launch the game again.

NVIDIA’s documented minimum OS baseline for its integration FAQ is Windows 10 version 2004, build 19041 or newer; individual current games may require a newer Windows version. Consult NVIDIA’s requirements alongside the game’s own system requirements.

Update the game, driver, and NVIDIA App

Game patches can add, change, or temporarily break an FG implementation. NVIDIA driver and App versions also matter, particularly for overrides. Update through official channels, restart, and test the game’s native setting before changing per-game overrides.

  1. Install the latest available Game Ready Driver for your GPU, then reboot. NVIDIA provides drivers at its official driver page.
  2. Update the NVIDIA App from NVIDIA’s download page.
  3. Update the game through its launcher and check its patch notes or official support page for Frame Generation requirements or known issues.
  4. If the game is missing from the NVIDIA App, use the app’s game refresh or rescan function.

Some NVIDIA App override features have specific minimum software versions. Those requirements are feature-specific and can change, so use NVIDIA’s DLSS override instructions for the override you intend to use rather than treating one version number as universal.

Set up the game in the right order

Exact dependencies are title-specific: some games expose FG only after another graphics option is enabled, while others handle the options differently. NVIDIA’s developer guidance notes that DLSS components have different requirements and that the application determines how those conditions are presented. NVIDIA’s DLSS 3 integration guidance provides implementation context.

  1. If the game offers multiple renderers and its FG implementation requires DirectX 12, select DirectX 12. Restart if the game requests it.
  2. Enable DLSS Super Resolution and choose a mode such as Quality, Balanced, or Performance if the game requires a DLSS mode before exposing FG.
  3. Enable NVIDIA Reflex if available. Reflex is recommended for responsiveness with generated frames; the exact requirement depends on the game.
  4. Enable DLSS Frame Generation, apply changes, and restart the game if prompted.
  5. Return to the setting and confirm it stayed enabled. Test in gameplay as well as the menu: some titles restrict graphics features in menus, cutscenes, or particular modes.

Do not treat DX12, DLSS Super Resolution, or Reflex as universal switches. A game’s own support notes take precedence; NVIDIA also notes that DLSS availability and API support vary by title. See NVIDIA’s gaming driver guidance.

Check which GPU the game is using on a laptop

Hybrid-graphics laptops can run the game through integrated graphics even when an RTX GPU is installed. The internal panel or an external display port may also be wired through a particular GPU, and MUX or Advanced Optimus modes can affect routing. Assign the game to the high-performance GPU in Windows:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
  2. Select the game executable. If it is not listed, add the desktop app and browse to the game’s executable.
  3. Choose Options, select High performance (the NVIDIA GPU), then save.
  4. Close and relaunch the game. If the laptop has a MUX switch or discrete-GPU mode, check the manufacturer’s control utility and its instructions.

Also test while connected to AC power and check whether the game is running through Remote Desktop, cloud streaming, capture software, or a virtualized environment; those paths can change what GPU or presentation method the game detects. If using an external monitor, try a port that the laptop manufacturer identifies as connected to the NVIDIA GPU. NVIDIA’s Advanced Optimus overview describes dynamic switching between integrated and GeForce graphics and its relationship to display features.

Test V-Sync, frame caps, and display modes as variables

A frame limiter or presentation mode can cause trouble in a particular game, but V-Sync is not a universal cause: newer Streamline implementations can support V-Sync, while behavior depends on the game’s integration, version, and display path. Use these changes as a controlled test, not permanent rules.

  • Avoid forcing V-Sync globally in NVIDIA Control Panel while isolating the issue.
  • Try fullscreen and borderless fullscreen if both are supported; test windowed mode only if relevant to the game.
  • If FG works, re-enable V-Sync, VRR/G-SYNC, overlays, and any frame cap one at a time to find the conflicting setting.

For a VRR display, a possible tuning setup is VRR enabled, in-game V-Sync off, driver V-Sync configured for the game’s presentation path, and a cap below the monitor’s maximum refresh rate. It is a tuning choice, not a prerequisite. NVIDIA documents V-Sync behavior in its Streamline requirements and DLSS-G programming guide.

Use NVIDIA App overrides only for supported titles

Overrides can expose newer supported DLSS behavior, but they do not create universal game compatibility. NVIDIA documents a DLSS Multi Frame Generation Override for RTX 50-series users when in-game FG is enabled, and a DLSS Frame Generation Model Upgrade for RTX 40- and RTX 50-series users when in-game FG is enabled. Other controls affect Super Resolution modes or models, not whether a title implements native FG. Check NVIDIA’s App update notes and its override instructions for supported titles and current steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To isolate an override issue, open the NVIDIA App, go to Graphics → Program settings, select the game, and temporarily return its DLSS override to Use 3D application setting. Retest the game’s own FG control. If that works, reapply only the override documented for that title and GPU. NVIDIA’s compatibility list is more authoritative than assuming an override works in every game.

Isolate a game-specific problem from a system-wide one

Follow this diagnostic path after the basic checks:

  1. Only one game has the disabled control: restore that game’s graphics settings to defaults, verify its files in the launcher, remove launch options and graphics .ini changes, and check its official patch notes and support page. Confirm its required API, mode, and FG implementation.
  2. The setting is missing or disabled in every supported game: recheck GPU model and game GPU assignment, HAGS, Windows version, driver installation, and any remote or virtualized display path.
  3. RTX 50 works for ordinary FG but not MFG: check whether the specific game and current NVIDIA App/driver support MFG; an RTX 50 card does not guarantee that every title exposes it.
  4. Native FG fails after mods or overrides: disable third-party upscaling or frame-generation tools, DLL replacements, launch options, and overlays temporarily. Return NVIDIA App overrides to application settings.
  5. Still failing: perform a clean NVIDIA driver installation, then test another supported game. If FG works there, the first title is likely the remaining variable; if it fails across titles, focus on system configuration or GPU routing.

Avoid unofficial DLL downloads or profile edits as an early fix: they can introduce instability or interfere with anti-cheat and are not a substitute for supported game implementation. For title-specific mode restrictions or patch regressions, the game’s official support channels are the best next stop.

Should you use Smooth Motion instead?

If native DLSS FG is unavailable because a compatible game does not implement it, Smooth Motion may be an option on supported RTX 40- or RTX 50-series systems with compatible NVIDIA App and driver support. It is driver-based rather than integrated into the game engine, so its behavior and artifacts can differ. NVIDIA discusses availability in its Smooth Motion announcement and gaming driver guide. Do not stack it with native DLSS FG; NVIDIA warns the two can compete, reducing performance or causing visual artifacts.

What generated FPS can and cannot tell you

Frame Generation can raise displayed frame rate, but generated frames do not replace the game-rendered frames. A very low base render rate can still feel poorly paced or unresponsive, and a CPU-bound game may gain less than a GPU-bound one. Reflex helps synchronize CPU and GPU work to reduce system latency, but a higher FPS counter alone does not prove good responsiveness. Where possible, compare base FPS, displayed FPS, frame time, and how the game feels; NVIDIA explains Reflex’s latency role in its gaming driver guidance.
