Start by checking whether the problem affects one game or all Windows audio. If it is one game, check its Volume Mixer level and output routing; if other apps also cut out or sound distorted, troubleshoot the Windows output device, enhancements, format, drivers, and connection.
First, find out whether the problem is game-specific
Play another game and test ordinary Windows audio. This separates a problem with one app from a broader output-device or Windows issue.
- Only one game is affected: Open Windows Volume Mixer, make sure the game is not muted or turned down, and check whether its audio is routed to the intended output. Windows supports app-specific volume and output settings, so other sounds can work even when one game is misconfigured. Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting and Steam’s USB troubleshooting cover these checks.
- Several apps or games are affected: Check which output Windows is using and whether that device is turned up. Depending on your setup, the choices may include speakers, a headset, a USB DAC, or monitor audio over HDMI. Select the device you actually want to hear through and test again. Microsoft’s sound troubleshooting guide explains output selection.
Change one setting at a time and listen for whether the symptom changes. That makes it easier to identify which branch matters instead of applying unrelated fixes.
If audio is distorted or crackling, test enhancements and format
Microsoft notes that “Audio enhancements can cause distortion or crackling on some devices.” Turn off enhancements for the selected output device, then test the game. If the sound is still distorted, choose a different available default format in that device’s Advanced settings and test again. These are reversible diagnostic checks, not a recommendation that one format is best for every device. See Microsoft’s distorted-audio troubleshooting steps.

Update the audio driver and restart Windows audio services
- Check Windows Update for audio-driver updates and install any relevant update. Restart Windows if prompted.
- If distortion or crackling continues, identify the sound device and get its latest driver from the computer or audio-device manufacturer. Microsoft recommends uninstalling the existing driver and reinstalling the latest manufacturer version when the problem persists. Avoid generic driver-download sites and driver utilities. - Restart the Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services, as described in Microsoft’s distorted-audio guide, then test again.
If you use USB audio, isolate the connection
For a USB headset, external sound card, or USB DAC, try another USB port. If the device disconnects intermittently or its behavior changes by port, disconnect nonessential USB devices, then reconnect them one at a time and test after each change. This can help identify a connection conflict; it does not by itself prove the audio device is defective. Steam’s USB connection and contention troubleshooting describes this isolation approach.
Steam also recommends checking game volume in Windows Volume Mixer and checking drivers in its sound troubleshooting guide. Its snd_legacy_surround 1 instruction is for Source games only; it is not a general Windows or all-games fix.

If a Bluetooth headset sounds poor or disconnects
Confirm that Windows still has the headset selected as its output. If audio quality is low or the connection drops, follow Microsoft’s Bluetooth audio troubleshooting. The right checks can vary with the Windows release and headset, so do not assume that changing one profile setting will fix every Bluetooth device.

- If one game still has trouble after its volume and routing checks, consult that game’s support page and audio settings.
- If multiple apps still fail after checking Windows output, enhancements, format, drivers, services, and the relevant USB or Bluetooth connection, test an existing alternate output if available.
- If you can, test the audio device on another computer. If the fault follows the device, that is useful evidence for further device-specific troubleshooting; do not conclude that replacement is necessary based only on one failed test.
Steam’s Source-game surround command is not a general remedy, and the USB steps are diagnostic rather than proof of hardware failure. Match the fix to the scope and connection you observed.
