Game stuttering is uneven frame delivery, not necessarily low average FPS. The right fix depends on whether the hitch comes from the game, Windows, a graphics driver, background software, or a hardware limit. First identify when it happens, then change one setting at a time and retest the same scene.

Identify what kind of stutter you have

Note what the hitch looks and feels like before changing settings. A frame-time graph is more useful than an FPS average alone: a game can report a high average while occasional slow frames still make motion feel jerky.

  • Low average FPS: The game is consistently slow rather than briefly hitching.
  • Microstutter or frame-time spikes: A few frames take much longer to render than the surrounding frames.
  • Traversal or asset-streaming stutter: Hitches occur while entering new areas or turning quickly, as the game loads assets.
  • Shader-compilation stutter: Hitches tend to occur the first time an effect or area appears, or after a game or driver update.
  • Thermal throttling: Performance worsens after the system has been running long enough to heat up.
  • Input or presentation stutter: Frames may render adequately but appear unevenly on the display.
  • Network lag: Players or objects rubber-band or respond late online. Graphics settings do not fix a network connection problem.
  • System-wide stutter: The desktop, video playback, or mouse movement is also choppy, pointing beyond one game.

Record whether it happens in one game or every game, offline or only online, in borderless or fullscreen mode, after a particular amount of play, or only in new locations. Note whether audio glitches too, whether the problem began after a game, Windows, driver, or BIOS update, and whether changing the game’s graphics API affects it.

Make a repeatable test

A controlled comparison prevents several simultaneous changes from obscuring the cause.

  1. Restart the PC.
  2. Close browsers, recording software, overlays, RGB utilities, and launchers or other applications the game does not need.
  3. Use the same save point or benchmark sequence, at the same resolution and graphics settings. Play long enough to reproduce the hitch.
  4. Record average FPS and, if available, 1% lows and a frame-time graph. Also watch GPU usage and temperature, CPU usage (including individual cores), VRAM, system RAM, disk activity, and CPU and GPU clocks.
  5. Change just one setting, then repeat the same test.

Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Xbox Game Bar, if enabled, opens with Win + G; DirectX Diagnostic Tool opens by pressing Win + R, entering dxdiag, and pressing Enter. System Information opens the same way with msinfo32.

If the display has gone wrong, Win + Ctrl + Shift + B can reset the graphics driver in some display-related failures. The screen may briefly flicker or beep. This is a recovery or diagnostic step, not a lasting stutter fix, as Microsoft explains.

Determine whether one game or the whole PC is affected

If only one game stutters

Prioritize that game’s shader compilation, asset streaming, patch, graphics API, mods, frame pacing, and VRAM use. Verify or repair its files in the launcher, temporarily disable mods and injectors such as ReShade, and try another graphics API if the game offers one. Test fullscreen and borderless separately. If reducing texture quality helps, VRAM pressure or texture streaming may be involved. If the game remains the only affected title, a Windows tweak may not fix an engine-level defect; check its official support page and patch notes.

If every game stutters

Investigate the graphics driver, Windows changes, background applications, display settings, temperatures, memory stability, storage, and power behavior. If the desktop is affected too, include Windows display composition, mixed-refresh-rate monitors, and system-wide driver or hardware trouble in the investigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the display refresh rate and VRR

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. Select the monitor used for the game and confirm its intended refresh rate is active.
  3. Check the monitor’s on-screen menu and the GPU control panel for its variable refresh rate (VRR) setting.

The Advanced display page shows the current refresh rate and whether VRR is supported; Microsoft notes that a 60 Hz display refreshes 60 times per second in its refresh-rate guidance. VRR includes G-SYNC, FreeSync, and VESA Adaptive-Sync. When the monitor, cable, GPU, driver, and game support it, VRR can improve presentation and reduce tearing. It cannot remove CPU stalls, shader compilation, or asset-streaming hitches. Test VRR on and off as separate comparisons.

On supported Windows 11 laptops, Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) requires compatible hardware, a VRR-capable display, and a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz. Microsoft warns that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate of some games; if a game appears to run at a lower refresh rate, test with DRR disabled using the same Windows display settings.

Test frame caps, V-Sync, and display modes

An uncapped frame rate can saturate the GPU, add heat and power draw, and produce variable frame times. Start with the game’s built-in limiter; if needed, test a per-game limiter in the graphics driver. NVIDIA Control Panel includes a per-application Max Frame Rate control in its 3D settings reference. AMD and Intel control-panel labels and available options can vary by driver version.

  • Whisper Quiet: The 9 fans of the laptop cooling stand are all added with capacitor components to reduce working noise. the gaming laptop cooler is almost quiet enough not to notice even on max setting.

There is no universally correct cap, including a fixed number of frames below monitor refresh. The best result depends on the display’s refresh rate and VRR range, the game’s limiter, whether the CPU or GPU is limiting performance, and how much input latency you will accept. Compare V-Sync with VRR disabled and enabled, and test the game and driver limiters separately. Aim for even delivery without unacceptable tearing or latency, not just the highest FPS.

Compare fullscreen and borderless mode rather than assuming one is always better. Borderless presentation interacts with Windows’ compositor; exclusive fullscreen can avoid some compositor behavior but may make task switching slower or affect HDR behavior. For a title that offers frame generation, test it separately from upscaling, V-Sync, VRR, and other latency options. Frame generation can make motion look smoother, but it does not repair an unstable base frame rate or CPU bottleneck; input response may still feel poor.

Test Windows graphics settings one at a time

Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings. Depending on your Windows build, hardware, and driver, options may include hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS), VRR, and optimizations for windowed games. Record the starting state, test one setting, restart Windows if changing it, then repeat your original test.

Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling

HAGS moves much of GPU scheduling work from the CPU to dedicated GPU scheduling hardware, but its results depend on the hardware and driver, as Microsoft’s DirectX team describes. Test it both ways rather than treating it as a guaranteed fix; restart after toggling. Some modern features, including certain frame-generation paths, may require it, so switching it off can also remove a feature you use.

Optimizations for windowed games

Microsoft says Optimizations for windowed games targets compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless mode. It can reduce presentation latency and enable features such as Auto HDR and VRR for supported windowed games. Test it both ways if borderless mode is the problem, fullscreen is smoother, or a Windows update changed presentation behavior. See Microsoft’s feature description.

Choose the GPU for an individual game

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Add or select the game executable, then select Options.
  3. Choose Let Windows decide, Power saving, or High performance, as appropriate for the system.
  4. If offered, adjust windowed-game optimization or Auto HDR for that game, then select Save.
  5. Restart the game and repeat the same test.

Windows documents these per-game choices and its redesigned graphics controls in its graphics settings overview. On a laptop with hybrid graphics, confirm that the game is using the intended GPU.

Update or roll back the graphics driver

Let timing guide the choice: if stutter began immediately after a driver update, try rolling back first; if the problem is long-standing, check for a current driver. If several driver changes failed, a clean reinstall may help after a GPU replacement, vendor switch, or repeated driver corruption. A single affected game after an update is not proof that the whole PC is defective; check both the game’s and driver’s release notes.

  2. Expand Display adapters, right-click the GPU, and select Properties > Driver.
  3. Choose Roll Back Driver, Update Driver, or Uninstall Device, as appropriate.
  4. Restart Windows and repeat the same game test.

Microsoft recommends considering rollback when a display problem follows a driver update, and notes that the PC or graphics-adapter manufacturer may provide the appropriate driver in its display troubleshooting guidance. On laptops, start with the laptop maker’s driver if it provides custom power management, hybrid graphics, display, or mux support. Use a generic NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel driver when it is appropriate for that model and the OEM driver is outdated or problematic. Third-party driver-cleaner utilities are an advanced option, not a routine first step; they add risk and another variable.

Match settings changes to the measured bottleneck

Change the settings that correspond to the evidence, rather than lowering everything. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance also recommends checking resource use, updates, storage space, power mode, and unnecessary startup apps.

GPU pressure

If GPU use is near maximum and the hitch worsens in visually complex scenes, compare lower resolution or resolution scale. If that helps, reduce ray tracing, shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, ambient occlusion, or effects quality. A setting that exceeds the GPU’s capacity can cause costly frame-time spikes even if average FPS seems adequate.

VRAM pressure

If VRAM use is near the card’s available capacity and hitches occur while moving through new areas, compare lower texture quality, texture streaming settings, or a high-resolution texture pack. Texture quality may affect VRAM and streaming more than average FPS; do not assume lowering it will always raise the frame rate.

CPU pressure

If GPU use falls while one or more CPU cores are heavily loaded, and lowering resolution makes little difference, test lower crowd density, view distance, simulation quality, physics, foliage, NPC detail, or background world activity. These changes are most relevant when stutters cluster around crowds, simulation, or open-world activity.

RAM, storage, and paging

Watch available RAM, page-file activity, and disk activity during a hitch. Check whether the game drive is nearly full, slow, or reporting errors. A drive upgrade is not a general cure for shader compilation or CPU simulation stutter; act on evidence of storage or capacity pressure instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recognize shader-compilation and streaming stutter

Shaders turn game effects and materials into work the GPU can run. Some games compile them during play rather than before launch, so a first encounter with an effect or area can hitch. A driver update, major patch, graphics-API change, or cleared cache can also mean shaders have to be built again. If the game offers shader precompilation, let it finish; after an update, a game may need time to rebuild its cache.

NVIDIA’s control-panel documentation identifies shader compilation as a common source of gameplay stutter and describes its Shader Cache Size control in its 3D settings reference. Do not routinely delete shader caches: rebuilding can make stutter worse temporarily. Clear a cache only when a vendor or game developer recommends it for a specific issue. For example, Intel driver release notes have documented cache clearing as a mitigation for particular game and driver combinations. If the same hitch persists on repeated visits to the same area, look for another cause too.

Rule out overlays and background software

Close or disable one potential conflict at a time, then retest: Xbox Game Bar recording, NVIDIA or AMD recording and overlays, Discord or Steam overlays, browser hardware-accelerated video, RGB or motherboard utilities, cloud-sync clients, hardware-monitoring overlays, tuning utilities, wallpaper engines, capture cards, and virtual-camera software. A monitoring overlay can help collect evidence, but test again with it off in case it is contributing to the problem.

Do not permanently disable security software as a blanket fix. Prefer its gaming mode or a narrow exception for a legitimate game, and only test its effect in a controlled way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a clean boot to find a conflict

  1. Sign in as an administrator, search for msconfig, and open System Configuration.
  2. On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then Disable all.
  3. Open Task Manager from the Startup tab and disable enabled startup items.
  4. Restart and test the game.
  5. If the stutter is gone, re-enable services and startup items systematically, testing as you go, to find the conflict.
  6. When finished, restore normal startup.

A clean boot can temporarily remove some functionality. Follow Microsoft’s steps for both performing a clean boot and restoring normal startup.

Check power, heat, and system stability

Power and laptops

For a laptop, plug in the charger, use the manufacturer’s performance mode, and check that the game is assigned to the discrete GPU if the system has one. Battery-only play is a useful comparison, not a performance target. In Windows, compare Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode > Best performance where available. It may increase power use, heat, and fan noise, so it is not automatically the right choice for battery life or thermals.

Thermals and clocks

Watch CPU temperature, GPU temperature and hotspot if available, clocks, fan speed, and power limit. If clocks drop when the stutter starts and the problem takes time to appear, investigate cooling or power limits before changing graphics quality at random.

Overclocks and memory profiles

As a controlled stability test, return CPU and GPU overclocks or undervolts to default. If memory instability is suspected, also test without XMP or EXPO. Unstable memory can cause crashes, corrupted assets, hitching, or unpredictable application behavior.

Investigate changes that coincide with the problem

If stutter began on a specific day, note the installed Windows update, graphics-driver version, BIOS or firmware update, game patch, new utility, or newly connected monitor, USB device, or drive. Check Windows Update history and release notes; timing alone does not prove an update caused the issue. Depending on the evidence, test the current graphics driver or roll it back. Use System Restore or update-recovery options only when appropriate, and avoid forum registry fixes without a clearly identified issue and safe rollback plan.

Do not make registry edits for MPO, timers, HPET, core parking, security mitigations, page files, or imported power plans a first-line stutter fix. Such changes can create stability, security, latency, or power problems and are hard to validate across Windows versions.

Use Windows repair tools only for broader symptoms

If stutter comes with crashes, failed updates, missing Windows components, or general system instability, rather than an isolated game hitch, run Command Prompt as administrator and execute:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow

These commands repair the Windows image and system files; Microsoft documents them in its Windows update troubleshooting guidance. They are not general-purpose FPS optimizers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle multi-monitor and game-mode edge cases carefully

A high-refresh gaming display paired with a 60 Hz secondary screen can complicate desktop composition, but it is not a universal cause. As a controlled test, disconnect the secondary monitor, try compatible refresh rates, compare fullscreen with borderless, and test HAGS and VRR independently. Avoid MPO registry workarounds as a first step because they can affect HDR, video playback, and other applications.

Windows Game Mode is also a low-priority A/B test, not a guaranteed FPS boost. Whether it helps depends on the system; prioritize identifying the bottleneck and background conflict first.

Know when to escalate to the game or hardware

If one title alone remains affected after checking its files, mods, graphics API, VRAM use, and patch notes, report a reproducible issue to the game developer with the scene, graphics settings, driver version, and symptoms. If every 3D application is affected, or you see repeated driver crashes, visual artifacts, abnormal temperatures or clocks, freezes under load, memory-test errors, or storage-diagnostic errors, investigate hardware stability or seek service. A new GPU, more RAM, SSD, or monitor is justified only when measurements identify that component as the bottleneck.

For Windows 10 users, normal Microsoft support and Windows Update servicing ended on October 14, 2025; see Microsoft’s Windows recovery and support information. A move to a supported Windows version may matter for ongoing servicing, but it is not a guaranteed fix for a game-specific stutter.
