If Gaming Services keeps showing an Update button, the Xbox app will not launch games, or Microsoft Store reports an error, start with Windows Update and Microsoft Store rather than immediately removing the package. The failure may involve the Store cache, Xbox app, account, network, policy restrictions, or damaged Windows app registration—not Gaming Services alone.
Work through the fixes below in order. The first steps are low risk; the PowerShell reinstall is an advanced option that removes Gaming Services for every Windows user and should only be used after the normal repair paths fail.
Quick fix checklist
- Restart Windows.
- Install updates from Settings > Windows Update.
- Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates.
- Run
wsreset.exe. - Repair, then reset, Microsoft Store, Xbox, and Gaming Services.
- Run Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool.
- Only if necessary, remove and reinstall Gaming Services with PowerShell.
What Gaming Services is—and what it is not
Gaming Services is a Microsoft component used by Xbox PC games, Microsoft Store games, and other games that depend on Microsoft’s gaming infrastructure. It is separate from the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Xbox identity components, and each individual game installation.
Removing Gaming Services does not normally remove installed game files. However, repairing or resetting Microsoft Store and Xbox can clear cached data, configuration, or sign-in state. Be prepared to sign in again and verify that your installed games still appear afterward.

Before you begin
- Close Xbox, Microsoft Store, affected games, and other game launchers.
- Restart the PC once.
- Record the exact error code, if one appears. Examples reported in Microsoft support discussions include
0x803FB017,0x80070490, and0x80073CFB; these are examples, not a complete diagnosis or error-code list. - Use an administrator account, or be ready to approve a UAC prompt for the advanced steps.
- Do not download Gaming Services packages from unofficial repositories.
- Do not delete Gaming Services registry keys as an initial fix.
On a work or school PC, Microsoft Store, Xbox, or Windows Update may be restricted by policy. In that case, contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the restriction.
1. Update Windows and Microsoft Store
Microsoft recommends updating Windows and Store apps before repairing or reinstalling them. Follow these steps:
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything available and restart Windows.
- Return to Windows Update and check again if another restart is requested.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library, then Get updates.
Allow Microsoft Store, Xbox, and Gaming Services updates to finish. Restart Windows and test the Xbox app again. Microsoft’s general Store-app guidance is available in its official troubleshooting guide.
2. Clear the Microsoft Store cache
A damaged Store cache can prevent Gaming Services from downloading or updating.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
wsreset.exe. - Press Enter.
- Wait while the command finishes. Microsoft Store should open when it is done.
- Restart Windows.
- Try Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates again.
wsreset.exe refreshes the Store cache; it does not repair every AppX registration, account, network, policy, or Windows-component problem.

3. Repair or reset Microsoft Store, Xbox, and Gaming Services
Windows 11’s wording and grouping can vary by build. Usually, the path is Settings > Apps > Installed apps. If an app is not immediately visible, use the search box on that page.
- Find Microsoft Store, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the update.
- If it still fails, return to the same screen and select Reset.
- Repeat the process for Xbox.
- Repair, then reset Gaming Services if it appears in the list.
Use Repair first because it is the less disruptive option. Reset can remove app data, cached credentials, and configuration, so you may need to sign in again. Avoid resetting the individual game unless you have a specific reason to do so.
4. Run Gaming Services Repair Tool
Microsoft and Xbox provide a dedicated repair utility for Gaming Services installation and update problems. Download it only through the official Microsoft repair-tool link or use the related Xbox support page.
- Download and open the tool.
- Approve administrator access if Windows requests it.
- Follow the on-screen repair steps.
- Restart Windows when the process finishes.
- Open Microsoft Store and select Library > Get updates.
- Test Xbox or the affected game.
The tool is an appropriate step before manually removing the package, but it is not guaranteed to resolve every case.
5. Reinstall Gaming Services with PowerShell
Use this only after the Store, app repair, and official repair-tool steps fail. The command removes Gaming Services for all Windows users. If Microsoft Store cannot reinstall it, you may create a second problem.

- Close Microsoft Store and Xbox.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).
- Run this command:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.GamingServices | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsersThen open the official Gaming Services Store page:
Start-Process "ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN"- When Microsoft Store opens the Gaming Services page, select Install or Update.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates.
- Open Xbox and test the game.
PowerShell capitalization does not matter, but the package name, punctuation, and -AllUsers parameter do. The Store protocol opens the product page; it does not bypass Microsoft Store’s installation, account, licensing, or network systems.

No visible output can mean Gaming Services is already absent for the current context or that its registration is damaged. Do not invent an MSIX download or install a package from an unofficial site. Try the Store protocol command above, then repair Microsoft Store if the product page will not install.
6. Repair the Xbox app if it remains stuck on “Launching”
If Gaming Services installs successfully but Xbox still hangs on startup, repair or reset Xbox through Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Xbox > Advanced options.
As an advanced step, an elevated PowerShell window can reset the Xbox app package:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.GamingApp | Reset-AppxPackageThis targets the Xbox app, not Gaming Services. Restart Windows after running it. Package names and app labels can change between Windows builds, so do not substitute this command for the Gaming Services removal command.

7. Decide whether the Store or Gaming Services is the real problem
Try updating a small, unrelated app in Microsoft Store.
- Another Store app updates: the issue is more likely specific to Gaming Services, Xbox, or their registration. Continue with the repair-tool and advanced reinstall steps.
- No Store app updates: prioritize Microsoft Store, Windows Update, account, network, policy, or Windows servicing repairs. Repeatedly removing Gaming Services is unlikely to fix a Store-wide failure.
For a Store-wide failure, repeat wsreset.exe, repair and reset Microsoft Store, install Windows updates, and check that the correct Microsoft account and region are configured. Also test whether a VPN, proxy, DNS filter, endpoint-security product, firewall rule, or organizational policy is blocking Store traffic. Do not permanently disable security software; use its documented troubleshooting or exception process instead.
8. Check related services
This is a secondary diagnostic step, not a requirement to force every service to start automatically.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
services.mscand press Enter. - Look for Xbox Live Auth Manager, Xbox Live Game Save, Xbox Live Networking Service, and Microsoft Store Install Service.
- If an obviously relevant service is stopped, start it and retest.
Avoid changing startup types unnecessarily. Windows manages these services differently across configurations, and setting all of them to Automatic is not universally required.
9. Test a new Windows user profile
A new account helps distinguish per-user corruption from a system-wide failure.

- Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Create or sign in with a test account.
- Open Microsoft Store and Xbox under that account.
- Test Gaming Services.
If it works in the new profile, the original account may have damaged per-user Store data or app registration. If it fails for every account, the cause is more likely system-wide, such as Windows servicing corruption, policy restrictions, or a Store infrastructure problem.
When to stop troubleshooting and escalate
If the repair tool and Store reinstall fail across multiple accounts, do not keep repeating the same removal command. Consider, in order:
- System Restore if the problem began after a recent driver, update, or software change.
- Windows component repair using Microsoft’s current Windows servicing guidance.
- An in-place Windows repair installation that preserves personal files and applications.
- Microsoft or Xbox Support, especially when multiple Store apps fail, an error code persists, or the PC is managed by an organization.
Registry deletion advice involving Gaming Services or GamingServicesNet is not a routine consumer fix. Use an official, situation-specific Microsoft procedure before making registry changes.
