If Gears of War: E-Day is crashing, stuttering, or running at low FPS on PC, start by checking whether it is installed on an SSD, then identify whether the issue matches shader compilation, a launch compatibility problem, or a misleading FPS counter. Those symptoms have different causes, so no single setting is a reliable fix for all of them. This guide reflects official information checked October 3, 2026, while the game is in early access and before its scheduled October 6 public launch; beta-specific advice is labeled as such.
Start with the symptom and installation drive
If loading trouble, missing assets, stuttering, or crashes occur together, check storage before lowering graphics settings. The official beta FAQ said mechanical hard drives were unsupported and could cause severe loading issues, missing assets, stuttering, or crashes. That warning applies to the beta; confirm the current launch requirements and your actual installation rather than treating beta guidance as the final specification.
- Open the Xbox app or the launcher you used to install the game and check the installation location.
- If it is on a mechanical HDD, move or reinstall it to an SSD, then launch the game again.
- If it is already on an SSD, check the drive for reported errors and note whether the problem is tied to loading, a particular scene, or gameplay generally.
The beta FAQ also said its PC specifications were not launch specifications. For a hardware eligibility check, use the final specification graphic linked in the September 17 Xbox Wire PC specifications post, updated September 28. The article text available here does not provide the CPU, GPU, or RAM values, so do not use beta figures as a substitute.
How to diagnose stuttering
First-launch shader compilation
A hitch concentrated around first launch or newly encountered content may be shader compilation, but not every stutter has that cause. Microsoft describes Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) as a way to include precompiled shaders with a game download, reducing CPU work at first launch and shader-compilation stutter during play. Its described setup requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or higher, and Microsoft says the Xbox PC app must be installed before downloading the game to experience ASD. The Coalition’s launch update says the Xbox PC app may also pre-install required shaders when a player intends to launch the game elsewhere. Support varies by GPU vendor and rollout, so the feature is not guaranteed on every PC.

Microsoft’s DirectX Developer Blog says E-Day shader compilation with ASD takes a few seconds at first launch, compared with several minutes on a typical PC without ASD, and describes compilation time as reduced by approximately 95%. These are Microsoft’s feature figures, not independent benchmark results or a promise for every configuration. See Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery explanation for the feature and setup context.
Stuttering with loading problems or missing assets
When those symptoms appear alongside stutter, prioritize the SSD check above. If the game is on an SSD and the hitch is not limited to shader compilation, record where and when it happens before changing settings; the official material does not establish that one graphics option resolves all stutter.

What to check when the game crashes or will not launch
Do not assume beta driver minimums are current
For its beta build, the official FAQ listed NVIDIA GeForce Game Ready Driver 610.74 or newer, AMD 26.7.1 or newer, and Intel 101.8864 or newer; it specifically warned that the beta would not launch with older NVIDIA drivers. Those are beta-era requirements, not confirmed launch-build recommendations. Check current game support and your GPU vendor’s current driver guidance before relying on those exact versions. The FAQ also stated that beta system specifications were not the launch specifications.
Beta-only fixes for particular errors
The following advice was published for the beta and should not be treated as a universal fix for the launch build:

- LowLevelFatalError in the Xbox PC app: the beta FAQ directed players to Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool.
- Crashes while recording: the beta FAQ said older OBS versions caused crashes and specified OBS 29.0.0 or newer. Verify current compatibility before changing your recording setup on a launch build.
The beta FAQ also warned that stability and performance were works in progress, with possible dips or crashes. That describes the beta, not necessarily the current build.

Check whether the counter includes generated frames
The Coalition says the game’s benchmark performance overlay does not include generated frames, so its FPS figure can read lower than the actual displayed frame rate when frame generation is enabled. Before judging performance, check which counter you are reading and whether frame generation is on. A counter that excludes generated frames is not directly comparable to one that reports them.

Compare upscalers on your own GPU and display target
The publisher lists NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, Unreal Engine TSR, and Intel XeSS among the PC technologies. That list is not a ranking. Compare only options supported by your GPU, and assess image quality, frame rate, and input responsiveness at your target resolution. The available official material does not provide a controlled like-for-like performance comparison or establish a universal best upscaler.
If performance remains low, compare your CPU, GPU, and memory against the final PC specifications graphic linked above, then adjust settings one at a time so you can see which change affects performance or image quality. The beta FAQ’s hardware figures should not be used as the final launch table.

Account for the launch build’s known caveats
The Coalition reports broad stability and performance improvements in its launch update, while noting two caveats:
- Playing through the full game without reloading checkpoints or restarting may cause memory issues. If blocked at an encounter or objective, the Coalition advises reloading a checkpoint. This does not establish that every crash is caused by memory use.
- The benchmark overlay omits generated frames, as described above, which can make its reported FPS misleading when frame generation is enabled.
For continuing crashes, stutter, or performance problems, check the official Gears of War support page and the Xbox service-status page. The Coalition’s launch update records current patches and known issues; guidance may change as the early-access build is updated.
