Error 0x800B1004 means GeForce NOW could not establish or maintain a game session. It is not proof that your graphics driver is broken, and NVIDIA does not currently publish a single code-specific cause. The fault may be the service, a particular game, your app, network, DNS, firewall, or security software.
Start with NVIDIA’s service status, then fully restart GeForce NOW, try the browser client, test another game, and switch networks. These quick comparisons usually reveal which layer is failing.
What error 0x800B1004 means
NVIDIA’s public documentation does not define one universal cause for this exact code. In practice, it is a broad connection or session-establishment failure: GeForce NOW cannot reach, authenticate with, or maintain the cloud gaming session.

Reinstalling GPU drivers is not the logical first step because the game is rendered remotely. Investigate the app, network path, firewall, DNS, account/session state, and NVIDIA service before changing graphics drivers.

Check NVIDIA service status
Open the GeForce NOW support hub and review Service Status for your region or data center. If several games fail on multiple devices, wait for an incident to clear rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app. A green status page makes a broad outage less likely, but does not rule out an ISP route, regional endpoint, or individual game-server problem.

Completely close and relaunch GeForce NOW
Closing the window may leave background processes running.
- Windows: press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, end processes clearly belonging to GeForce NOW or beginning with “GeForce,” then reopen the app. - macOS: press
Option+Command+Esc, select GeForce NOW, choose Force Quit, and relaunch. - Android TV, Google TV, or SHIELD: force-stop the app, then launch it again. Reboot the device if it still fails immediately.
NVIDIA recommends ending GeForce processes as part of its installation troubleshooting; the same clean-process reset is a reasonable step for a stuck client.

Try the browser client
Open play.geforcenow.com in a supported, up-to-date browser. NVIDIA’s current browser versions and platform requirements are listed on its system-requirements page.
- Browser works, native app fails: focus on the app, its cache, permissions, installation, or app-specific firewall handling.
- Both fail: suspect the network, DNS, firewall, account/session, service, or game.
Browser success is strong evidence that your account and at least one network path work, but it is not absolute proof that every game or data-center route is healthy.

Test another game
If only one title produces 0x800B1004, do not reset your entire network immediately. A game launch service, patch, entitlement, or game-specific server may be at fault. If every game fails, continue with the network checks below.

Use Ethernet, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, or a hotspot
NVIDIA recommends wired Ethernet or reliable 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Pause downloads, cloud backups, torrents, and video streams. If possible, test a phone hotspot briefly.

A hotspot is useful for diagnosis but may be unsuitable for regular play because of data limits and variable latency.

Reboot the router and device
Shut down the GeForce NOW device. Unplug the modem and router for about 30–60 seconds, reconnect the modem and wait for synchronization, reconnect the router, then restart the device. This can clear a stale NAT session or router state, but it cannot fix an NVIDIA outage.

Run GeForce NOW’s network test
Use the in-app network test where available and screenshot the download speed, latency, packet loss, jitter or quality result, and selected data center before changing settings. A normal broadband speed test is not enough: cloud gaming is also sensitive to latency, packet loss, jitter, Wi-Fi interference, and routing.
NVIDIA currently lists these approximate bandwidth requirements, depending on resolution and frame rate:

Test firewall or antivirus interference
For a short test only, close GeForce NOW, temporarily disable third-party antivirus web/network protection or firewall protection, reopen the client, and try the game. Re-enable protection immediately afterward. If this confirms interference, update the security product or create a narrow application exclusion; do not leave protection disabled.
For native apps, NVIDIA lists UDP 49003 (inbound audio), UDP 49004 (outbound audio), UDP 49005 (inbound video), and TCP/UDP 49006 (remote input). Corporate or school networks may also need UDP 5004 and ports 10,000–20,000. These native-app details do not apply to browser streaming. Do not broadly forward ports to the internet; ask the network administrator on managed, hotel, apartment, work, or school networks.

Flush DNS and, when appropriate, test another DNS provider
On Windows, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

Update or reinstall GeForce NOW
Download the current installer only from NVIDIA’s official download page. End GeForce NOW processes first. If an update does not help, uninstall the app, reboot, and install it again. On Windows, NVIDIA identifies the usual installation location as

Avoid registry cleaners, “fixed” DLL downloads, cracked installers, and third-party driver utilities.

Should you update drivers, kill “NVIDIA Container,” or use a VPN?
Do not make a graphics-driver reinstall your first move. It may help a separate local decoding or display problem, but no evidence establishes it as the specific 0x800B1004 fix.
Ending an “NVIDIA Container” process is an anecdotal Windows workaround, not an NVIDIA-confirmed solution. Close GeForce NOW cleanly and end only clearly related GeForce NOW processes; killing unrelated NVIDIA services can disrupt other software.
A VPN can change a poor route, but it can also increase latency, packet loss, or location checks. Use one only as a temporary comparison, not as a default cure or a reason to buy a subscription.
When to contact NVIDIA
Contact NVIDIA support when the error persists across multiple devices and networks, browser and native app both fail, other games also fail, the network test consistently passes, or a clean reinstall changes nothing. Include:

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 0x800B1004 definitely a GeForce NOW server error?
No. It can result from a service-side or routing problem, but the code alone does not distinguish that from a local app, firewall, DNS, Wi-Fi, account, or game-specific failure.
Will changing DNS always fix the error?
No. DNS can help with stale or incorrect name resolution, including the Europe-and-Canada incident NVIDIA documented in February 2026. It will not repair blocked UDP traffic, poor Wi-Fi, an outage, or a broken game server.
Why does GeForce NOW work in a browser but not in the app?
Browser and native clients use different traffic paths and permissions. Browser success usually shifts attention to the native app, its installation, cache, permissions, or app-specific firewall rules.

Usually not. First test Ethernet or a hotspot, reboot the existing router, and run GeForce NOW’s network test. Replace or reconfigure hardware only when testing shows persistent Wi-Fi congestion or poor local network quality.
