If hand tracking on your Meta Quest 2 is missing, dropping out, or inaccurate, start with the room and the tracking settings—not a factory reset. Use diffuse indoor lighting, keep your hands visible, set the controllers out of the headset’s view, check that hand tracking is enabled, clean the external cameras, and restart the headset. Then test in the Quest home environment before troubleshooting an individual game.

Quest 2 hand tracking relies on the headset cameras seeing your hands. Darkness, glare, occlusion, active controllers, a confused boundary state, software faults, and app-specific limitations can all look like the same problem. Work through the checks below in order and stop once tracking works.

Start with this quick checklist

  1. Move to a normally lit indoor room. Avoid near-darkness, direct sunlight, glare, strong backlighting, and rapidly changing shadows.
  2. Hold your hands in front of the headset, with fingers slightly spread. Keep them apart, move slowly, and test with empty hands.
  3. Set both controllers down outside the headset’s view and wait several seconds.
  4. Gently wipe the headset’s external tracking cameras with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Do not spray liquid onto the headset.
  5. Check that hand tracking is enabled in Settings, then toggle it off and on if it already is.
  6. Restart the headset and test hand tracking in the Quest home environment.

If it still fails, clear the saved boundary history and draw a new boundary. Check for a public software update and test another hand-tracking-compatible app before considering a factory reset.

Identify what is failing

What you see Likely explanation Best first check
Hands never appear anywhere Hand tracking is disabled, the cameras cannot see your hands clearly, or there is a broader software or camera problem. Enable tracking, improve lighting, clean the cameras, then restart.
Hands appear and then vanish Hands may be occluded, controllers may still be in view, or tracking may be unstable. Set controllers out of view; test with hands apart and moving slowly.
One hand works, the other does not The second hand may be at a poor angle, outside the cameras’ view, or hidden by the first. Test each hand separately, centered in front of the headset.
Hands jitter or gestures register poorly Lighting, glare, dirty cameras, fast movement, or hidden fingers may be making recognition unreliable. Use even indoor light, clean the cameras, and try simple, slow gestures.
Tracking works at home but not in one game The game may not support hand tracking, may require an in-game setting, or may have a game-specific bug. Check that title’s controls and test another compatible app.
Hand tracking, Guardian, and passthrough are all abnormal This may be a wider headset tracking or camera issue rather than a hand-input problem. Restart and redraw the boundary; contact Meta Support if it continues.

Make the headset’s view easier to track

Use even, diffuse indoor lighting

Quest 2 needs a usable camera view of your hands. Try an evenly lit room; more brightness is not automatically better. Direct sunlight, glare, strong backlighting, severe shadows, and flashing or rapidly changing light can make tracking less reliable. If the problem happens in just one room, test elsewhere. A room with confusing reflections or very uniform surfaces could also be a factor, but that alone does not prove a fault.

Do not assume infrared lighting will fix the issue. The safe baseline is ordinary, comfortable indoor lighting, without direct sun shining into the headset cameras.

Keep your hands visible and move deliberately

While testing, hold your hands in the headset’s forward view—not right against the headset or far out to the sides. Keep fingers from hiding behind your palm, avoid crossing your hands, and start with simple movements such as an open palm, pointing, or a pinch. Move slowly until tracking is stable. Remove gloves, bulky rings, long sleeves, or anything else that hides your fingers, and put down objects that obstruct your hands.

These are practical ways to help a camera-based system see your hands, not guaranteed gesture thresholds. What gestures work also depends on the software and the app.

Set controllers aside

Quest may not switch to hands as expected while it still detects the controllers. Put both controllers down where their tracking rings or lights are out of the headset’s view. Wait several seconds, then raise one hand at a time and try the system menu.

If hands work only after the controllers are out of view, the problem is likely input switching rather than a complete loss of hand tracking. Automatic switching depends on the relevant setting and software version. Some versions or configurations may offer a controller double-tap gesture to switch modes, but do not rely on that method being available.

Check the hand-tracking setting

  1. Press the Meta button on the right controller to open the universal menu.
  2. Select the clock or status area to open Quick Settings, then open Settings.
  3. Look under Movement Tracking, Tracking, or a similarly named section.
  4. Turn on Hand Tracking or Hand and Body Tracking, if that is the label shown.
  5. If tracking is already enabled, turn it off, wait briefly, and turn it back on. If available, enable Auto-switch between controllers and hands.

Menu names and locations can change with Quest software updates. If you cannot find an exact label, look for the closest tracking or movement option.

When switching is automatic, setting the controllers aside and raising your hands may be enough. If it is not, use the hand-tracking toggle in Quick Settings if you can still reach it.

Clean the cameras and restart

Clean and inspect the external cameras

Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to gently wipe the headset’s external camera lenses. Do not use an abrasive cloth or spray cleaner directly onto the headset. Check for smudges, stickers, lens protectors, cracks, or other visible damage. Remove anything covering a camera while diagnosing the problem. Dirt is one possible cause, not an explanation for every tracking failure.

Restart, then try a full power-down

First, hold the power button until the power menu appears and select Restart. If tracking is still broken, hold the power button for roughly 30 seconds, releasing it when the headset powers down or starts restarting. Turn it back on and test in the home environment.

A forced restart is not a factory reset and should not erase installed content. If the headset is frozen, a power-button restart is a safer next step than resetting the device.

Clear and redraw the boundary

If the basic checks and restart do not help, reset the saved boundary state. The setting may be called Guardian, Boundary, or Environment Setup, depending on the software version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the universal menu with the right controller, then open Quick Settings and Settings.
  2. Go to Environment Setup, Boundary, or Guardian.
  3. Select Clear Boundary History and confirm.
  4. Create a new stationary or room-scale boundary, then test hand tracking again.

Clearing boundary history removes saved play-space information, so you will need to set up the boundary again. It is not a factory reset, but it can affect boundary setup for multiple profiles on the headset. Meta support has recommended checking tracking settings, clearing boundary history, redrawing the boundary, and fully powering down in hand-tracking troubleshooting cases (Meta community support response).

Separate a headset problem from an app problem

Test hand tracking in the Quest home environment before deciding the headset is defective:

  • It fails at home and in multiple apps: Continue with headset-level checks, including settings, restart, boundary, and software update.
  • It works at home but fails in one game: Check the game’s own control settings and support information. The game may not support hand tracking or may have an app-specific issue.
  • It works in some games but not others: Hand tracking and supported gestures vary by title.
  • It works in system panels but not in a PC VR session: Check the PC VR app and Link or Air Link setup separately. Do not assume Quest hand tracking is supported in every PC VR experience.

Quest 2 supports system-level hand tracking, but that does not mean every game supports it, or that every title supports menus, mixed controller-and-hand input, or every gesture. Hand tracking is also distinct from Direct Touch, a separate experimental interface feature. Meta announced Direct Touch for Quest 2 with software v50; it lets users touch or tap some virtual panels rather than using a pinch, but it is not universal app support (Meta’s v50 Direct Touch announcement).

Check for software updates without joining a prerelease channel

Open Settings → System → Software Update, or the equivalent menu on your software version. Connect the headset to Wi-Fi and make sure it has sufficient charge while checking for an available public update. Menu labels vary, so use the closest equivalent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the problem began immediately after an update, note the software version and whether it began before or after any settings change. Do not assume that installing a prerelease build will fix it. The Public Test Channel (PTC) uses prerelease software, which can introduce new issues; unsupported operating-system downgrades are not a normal troubleshooting step. Meta community guidance likewise cautions about prerelease builds and downgrading (Meta community discussion). The exact current Quest 2 software version can change, so check the headset rather than relying on a version number in a static guide.

If you do not have a working controller

You may still be able to recover access without one, though not every setting can be changed controller-free. Use the headset’s head-directed cursor and volume buttons where available, navigate to the hand-tracking setting if the interface permits, and restart with the power button. The Meta Horizon mobile app can help with some device-management tasks, but it does not replace every headset control. Meta community guidance discusses these options for Quest 2 owners without a working controller (Meta community discussion).

When to contact Meta Support

Contact Meta Support rather than repeatedly resetting if hand tracking still fails after a restart, boundary reset, and public software update—especially if:

  • Passthrough is abnormal or Guardian cannot be created.
  • Tracking fails in multiple rooms and in the home environment as well as compatible apps.
  • An external tracking camera is cracked or visibly damaged.
  • The headset was dropped, exposed to liquid, or overheated before the issue began.

A failed hand-tracking test by itself does not prove that a camera is defective. If controllers still work, report which tracking functions fail, the software version, what lighting you tested in, and whether the fault occurs in more than one app. If the headset may be covered by warranty, ask Support about options before attempting a reset.

Factory reset only as a last resort

A factory reset erases local device data and settings and requires setup again; you may also need to reinstall apps. Some cloud-synced data may be recoverable, but do not assume every save, recording, or configuration is backed up. Try the environment, settings, restart, boundary, software, and app checks first, and consider contacting Meta Support before resetting. Meta guidance treats a factory reset as a last resort and notes that it erases saved data (Meta community troubleshooting discussion).

Do not buy a tracking accessory as the first fix. A replacement controller may help you navigate settings if yours is missing or broken, but it will not repair headset cameras. A strap or facial interface might affect fit, so temporarily remove unusual third-party accessories while testing; neither is a remedy for a camera or software fault. For general Quest tracking troubleshooting, see PLAION’s Meta Quest troubleshooting guidance.
