Start by finding where latency begins instead of changing random Windows settings. Test your router with ping <default-gateway> -t, test the internet with ping 1.1.1.1 -t, then compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi. Spikes to the router indicate a local wireless, cable, adapter or router problem; a stable router ping with unstable internet points toward the modem, ISP or upstream routing; stable tests with one troublesome game indicate its server, region or network path.
These instructions apply to Windows 10, whose support ended on October 14, 2025. Move to a supported Windows release where your hardware allows, and avoid unofficial “ping optimizer” software or security-disabling tweaks.
What high ping, jitter and packet loss mean
Ping (latency) is round-trip travel time, measured in milliseconds. Jitter is variation in that time, while packet loss means data never arrives or must be retransmitted. Rubber-banding and delayed actions are often caused by jitter or loss rather than a high average alone. A stable 70 ms connection can feel better than one fluctuating between 20 and 300 ms.
Bandwidth is capacity, not latency. A faster plan cannot shorten the distance to a game server. If lag begins only when somebody downloads or uploads, queued traffic (bufferbloat) is a more likely cause than insufficient advertised speed. FPS stutter, high CPU/GPU use and thermal throttling can look like network lag, so compare the game’s network graph with frame-time data.

Find where the latency starts
1. Identify your gateway
- Open Command Prompt and run
ipconfig /all. - Note the Default Gateway, commonly
192.168.1.1or192.168.0.1.
2. Test the local link and internet separately
ping <default-gateway> -t
ping 1.1.1.1 -t
Run each in its own Command Prompt and stop with Ctrl+C. Microsoft recommends router ping tests and Ethernet isolation when diagnosing Wi-Fi problems (Microsoft Wi-Fi guidance).
| Symptom | Likely area | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Router ping spikes or loses packets | Wi-Fi, cable, adapter or router | Test Ethernet; check placement and drivers |
| Router stable, 1.1.1.1 spikes | Modem, ISP, routing or congestion | Test at different times and contact ISP if persistent |
| Both stable, one game is bad | Game server, region, launcher or route | Try another region/title and check publisher status |
| Lag only during household transfers | Queueing or bufferbloat | Stop traffic, then test SQM/QoS |
| High average latency without spikes | Distance or routing | Try a nearer region or alternate route; Windows tweaks are unlikely to help |
3. Optional route inspection
tracert 1.1.1.1
tracert game-server-hostname.example
Traceroute provides clues, not proof: routers may block or deprioritize probes, an asterisk is not automatically packet loss, and the game may use a different protocol or path.
Apply the least disruptive fixes first
Test Ethernet
- Connect the PC directly to the router with a known-good cable.
- Disable Wi-Fi temporarily or verify the game uses the wired adapter.
- Test the same game, region and time of day.
Ethernet may not lower route latency, but it often removes wireless interference, weak-signal variation and local packet loss. Try another cable if necessary; Microsoft specifically recommends comparing wired and wireless connections (Microsoft Ethernet guidance).
Stop competing traffic
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escand open Processes. - Sort by Network.
- Pause Steam, Epic, Battle.net and Microsoft Store downloads; OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, backup jobs, torrents, browser streams and unnecessary VPNs.
A launcher may continue uploading or verifying after its visible download finishes. Microsoft also recommends ending high-bandwidth processes (Wi-Fi troubleshooting).

- Smart Home Master makes it easy to set up functional subnetwork (up to 3 SSIDs) for IoT devices and VPNs
- ROG-exclusive Gaming Network streamlines Triple-Level Game Acceleration setup and connections through convenient SSIDs
Restart correctly
- Close the game and unplug the modem and router.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Power on the modem and wait for ISP synchronization.
- Power on a separate router, restart the PC, and retest.
Do not factory-reset the router at this stage; that erases Wi-Fi credentials, port rules and other configuration.
Compare games and regions
Use another online title, a different server region, and—if available—the game’s latency graph. Test with the VPN off and on only as a comparison. If one title alone is affected, check its status page, update the game and launcher, and report timestamps, region and ISP details to its support team.
Fix Wi-Fi and adapter causes
- Test beside the router to separate distance from other causes; improve line of sight and avoid cabinets, furniture and interference sources.
- Choose the band that works best for your distance and congestion. 5 GHz often has more throughput and less congestion but shorter range and weaker wall penetration than 2.4 GHz.
- Update the Wi-Fi adapter driver and check that its supported frequency matches the router. Microsoft documents driver and frequency checks (Wi-Fi connection guidance).
- Try another Wi-Fi network or phone hotspot as an isolation test. A wireless extender can add another congested hop; wired backhaul is preferable.
Test power management
- Open Device Manager > Network adapters.
- Open the adapter’s Properties > Power Management.
- Temporarily clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, then retest.
This is an experiment, not a universal optimization; it may increase power use and may be unavailable. Treat advanced options such as Interrupt Moderation, buffers, Flow Control and Roaming Aggressiveness similarly: change one value at a time and record how to undo it.
Repair Windows networking
Run the built-in troubleshooter
Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Try Internet Connections, Network Adapter or Incoming Connections when present. Labels vary by Windows 10 build as Microsoft moves troubleshooting toward Get Help.

Reset Winsock and TCP/IP
Open Command Prompt as administrator (search for it, right-click, choose Run as administrator) and run:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
Restart afterward. Winsock and TCP/IP resets repair damaged configuration; release/renew obtains a DHCP lease; flushdns clears the resolver cache. They interrupt connectivity and do not guarantee a lower normal ping. Microsoft documents this sequence (TCP/IP reset instructions). DNS flushing is cache maintenance, not a general in-game latency cure (Microsoft DNS client troubleshooting).
Update or reinstall the adapter driver
- Press
Win+X, choose Device Manager, expand Network adapters. - Right-click the adapter and choose Update driver. Prefer the PC, motherboard or adapter manufacturer’s official driver.
- For a suspected bad driver, download a compatible replacement first, then choose Uninstall device. Select Attempt to remove the driver for this device only when a replacement is available; restart and install it.
Do not use generic driver-updater sites. Microsoft warns to keep a backup driver before uninstalling.
Use Network reset only last
Go to Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset > Reset now > Yes. Windows removes and reinstalls network adapters after restarting. This can forget saved settings, return the profile to Public, require Wi-Fi credentials, and require VPN clients or Hyper-V virtual switches to be configured again (Microsoft network reset guidance).

Control congestion with router SQM or QoS
If the gateway and internet pings are fine while the connection is idle but spike during uploads, downloads or streaming, queueing is likely. Enable the router’s Smart Queue Management (SQM) or a well-designed adaptive QoS feature if available. If manual limits are required, set them conservatively below measured real capacity. Test with the feature enabled and disabled: poor implementations can reduce throughput or add delay.
Controls and names differ by router, and ISP gateways may hide them. SQM can reduce congestion spikes but cannot fix a distant server or poor ISP route.
What not to mistake for a ping fix
DNS changes
Changing DNS may alter how quickly a launcher resolves a hostname, but normally does not change the established gameplay route. Use nslookup example.com to investigate name resolution, not to measure in-match latency.
VPNs
A VPN can occasionally bypass an unusual ISP route, but encryption and an extra hop can increase latency or loss. Compare the same game and region with it on and off.
Best Value
- Tri-band 2.4GHz + 5GHz + 6GHz; latest WiFi 6E supports 8-streams on tri-band simultaneously, up to 6.6Gbps speed
- AI QoS; satisfies all users' needs by automatically prioritizing data packets
- Powerful processor; 1.8 GHz quad core processor delivers ultra fast and reliable connections

- Game accelerator; provides an uninterrupted WiFi connection for immersive gaming experiences
Port forwarding
Port forwarding can address NAT or matchmaking requirements in particular games, using the publisher’s official ports, but it does not reduce physical latency and creates configuration and security risk.
Registry tweaks and security changes
Avoid unsupported edits such as NetworkThrottlingIndex, unexplained TCP autotuning changes, registry cleaners, “one-click ping reducers,” and advice to disable Firewall, antivirus or updates. They cannot overcome server distance or ISP routing and can make recovery harder.
When to contact the ISP or game publisher
Contact the ISP when wired gateway pings are stable but external latency or packet loss persists, several devices are affected, evening hours are consistently worse, the modem reports synchronization errors, or an outage is listed. Provide:
- Dates and times, including the time zone.
- Whether Ethernet was tested.
- Gateway and external ping results with packet-loss percentage.
- Affected games, server regions and devices.
- Whether the problem occurs on all household connections.
For a single game, send the publisher its timestamps, region, ISP, client version and relevant packet-loss observations. A server can ignore ICMP ping while game traffic still works, so interpret missing replies with caution.
