Start by checking Steam Remote Play’s performance overlay while the stutter happens. Spikes in its cyan network-time line point to variable network timing; if the line stays steady, investigate the game’s frame rate or the host PC’s video encoding. Then make one change at a time so you can tell what helped.
Check whether the problem is network timing or host performance
Steam Link for Android streams a game from a PC using Steam Remote Play. Valve supports Android 5.0 and newer and recommends a 5 GHz wireless router for this setup (Valve’s Steam Link app information).
- In Steam Link’s advanced streaming settings, enable the Remote Play performance overlay. Menu wording can vary by app version.
- Reproduce the problem and watch the overlay during a hitch. Valve says large spikes in the cyan network-time line indicate highly variable network time and usually coincide with video stuttering or freezing (Valve’s suggested Remote Play settings).
- If spikes appear at the same time as the stutter, work on the network path first. If they do not, check the host game’s frame rate and encoding performance. The overlay is a useful clue, not proof that it has identified every cause.
If the overlay points to the network
Improve the connection before changing hardware
- Connect the host PC to the router with Ethernet if practical. This removes the PC’s Wi-Fi link from the streaming path.
- Connect the Android device to the router’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi network when available. Keep it close enough for a strong signal; walls, distance, and interference can reduce wireless performance.
- Pause large downloads, file transfers, or other streams that are using the same wireless network while you test.
- Try moving the router or Android device to improve the signal. Change one factor at a time and repeat the same game segment.
Reduce stream demand, then increase it carefully
In Steam Link’s streaming settings, try the Balanced or Fast quality preset, or use the bandwidth limit option. Valve suggests beginning at 3 Mbit/s and raising the limit gradually until hitches occur, then stepping back. That is a tuning method—not a universal bandwidth requirement for every game, resolution, or network (Valve’s suggested Remote Play settings).
If a lower bandwidth limit or quality preset stops the stutter, the connection may not be sustaining the stream’s previous demand. Keep the highest setting that remains stable in your usual play conditions.

If the network appears stable, check the PC and game
A low streaming frame rate can result from a slow game frame rate or slow video encoding on the host PC. Valve’s low-framerate guidance recommends reducing streaming resolution; 1280×720 is one example. If that is not enough, lower the game’s own display resolution and compare results (Valve’s low-framerate troubleshooting guidance).
- Lower the Steam Link stream resolution first, then test the game at a lower display resolution if needed.
- Test the host’s hardware encoding settings. The result can vary with the host GPU, so compare settings rather than assuming one option is best.
- Close demanding background tasks and utilities that could interfere with streaming or encoding, then test again.
If changing the host resolution, game frame rate, or encoding setting changes the stutter while network timing stays steady, focus further troubleshooting on the PC rather than buying network hardware.

Check network configuration only if connection problems suggest it
For local Remote Play, the host PC and Android client must be reachable on the same network. Valve notes that access point or client isolation can prevent devices from reaching each other. This is especially relevant if Steam Link cannot find or connect to the host, rather than as a general remedy for stuttering.
For connection troubleshooting, Valve lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036 and TCP ports 27036 and 27037 (Valve’s Remote Play network guidance). Do not add arbitrary port-forwarding rules to fix local streaming stutter.

When a router upgrade may be worth considering
Consider a router with 5 GHz Wi-Fi and 802.11ac support only if the overlay and your tests point to the wireless network as the bottleneck, and placement, competing traffic, and stream settings have not solved it. Valve recommends a 5 GHz wireless setup; a new router is not a guaranteed fix, because the Android device, host connection, signal conditions, and local interference also matter.
