How to Fix Lag in Fortnite on PC: FPS, Stutter, Ping, and Packet Loss

Fortnite lag can mean choppy FPS or a poor network connection. Identify the symptom first, then use the right fixes for PC performance, ping, or packet loss.

To fix lag in Fortnite on PC, first identify whether the problem is low or unstable FPS, or network lag such as high ping and packet loss. FPS problems come from rendering or PC performance; ping and packet loss come from the connection to the game server. Check the matching readings before changing settings: router fixes will not raise FPS, and a weak graphics card does not necessarily explain high ping.

First, identify what kind of lag you have

  • Low FPS or stuttering: the game looks choppy, freezes briefly, or the frame-rate counter drops. Follow the PC-performance steps below.
  • High ping, jitter, or packet loss: movement or actions arrive late, or the network HUD shows spikes or lost packets. Follow the connection steps.
  • Both: troubleshoot each branch separately; one problem can coexist with the other.

Ping is the time data takes to travel to a Fortnite server and back, measured in milliseconds. Epic explains how to view in-game network readings in its network performance details guide.

Fix low FPS, frame drops, or stuttering

1. Check whether your PC meets Fortnite’s requirements

Epic’s system requirements page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists these specifications. Game requirements can change, so check the current official requirements before buying or replacing hardware.

Tier Graphics Processor Memory and storage Operating system
Minimum Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon Vega 8 Core i3-3225 at 3.3 GHz 8 GB RAM; storage type not stated by Epic Windows 10 64-bit version 22H2 or Windows 10 Enterprise 21H2
Recommended GTX 960, AMD R9 280, or equivalent DX11 GPU with 2 GB VRAM Core i5-7300U at 3.5 GHz, Ryzen 3 3300U, or equivalent 16 GB RAM or higher; NVMe SSD Windows 10/11 64-bit
Epic Quality Presets RTX 3070, Radeon RX 6700 XT, or equivalent with 8 GB VRAM or higher Core i7-8700, Ryzen 7 3700X, or equivalent 16 GB RAM or higher; NVMe SSD Windows 10/11 64-bit

Epic notes that systems at minimum specifications may need lower graphics settings and fewer background applications. Meeting a listed tier does not guarantee a particular frame rate.

2. Verify the game files and update graphics drivers

  1. Open the Epic Games Launcher and go to your Library.
  2. Find Fortnite, open its Manage menu, and choose Verify. Let the check finish before launching the game again.
  3. Install the latest compatible graphics driver from your GPU manufacturer, then restart the PC if prompted.

Epic includes file verification and driver updates in its low-frame-rate troubleshooting guidance.

3. Reduce competing work and try Performance mode

Close unnecessary applications, especially anything using substantial CPU, memory, or graphics resources. On older or less powerful hardware, try Fortnite’s Performance rendering mode; Epic says results depend on the PC and may be small or nonexistent. Its support page gives two examples from specific laptops in a standard Squads match at 720p: one rose from 24 FPS to 61 FPS, and another from 18 FPS to 45 FPS. These are examples, not a prediction or guarantee for another computer.

4. Check Windows power and graphics settings

Epic’s Windows-specific guide covers assigning Fortnite to the high-performance GPU, choosing a high-performance power mode, enabling Game Mode, and turning off Xbox Game Bar or Windows Delivery Optimization downloads. Follow the steps for your Windows version in Epic’s low-FPS Windows instructions; restart if prompted.

5. Lower graphics settings and check frame-rate limits

If the problem appears tied to graphics, Epic recommends starting with Quality Presets set to Low and 3D Resolution at 100%, then raising settings gradually if the issue improves. See Epic’s graphics troubleshooting steps.

If FPS is capped or locked, review V-Sync and the in-game frame-rate limit. Epic warns that manually changing FPS can itself cause stuttering or drops, so revert a change if performance gets worse. Its FPS cap guide explains the relevant settings.

6. Keep the PC cool; consider storage only when relevant

Epic includes adequate cooling among its low-FPS suggestions. Check that vents are unobstructed and fans can move air; do not assume overheating without evidence. Epic lists NVMe SSD storage in its recommended specifications and says SSD storage can reduce hitches and stutters on older machines, but that is not a guaranteed performance increase. Confirm your PC supports a particular drive before purchasing one.

Fix high ping, jitter, or packet loss

1. Compare in-game readings with an endpoint test

Check Fortnite’s network performance details for ping and packet loss, then compare with a test to the relevant Epic subregion endpoint described in its latency and ping troubleshooting guide. A matchmaking region can contain multiple subregions, and matches may use different servers.

Do not rely on average ping alone: spikes, jitter, and lost packets can disrupt play even when an average looks acceptable. Epic says packet loss consistently above about 1% can cause problems and advises keeping jitter low.

2. Rule out Wi-Fi and household traffic

  1. If practical, connect the PC directly to the router with Ethernet. This helps distinguish Wi-Fi signal problems from other connection issues; it will not raise FPS or repair ISP routing.
  2. Pause large downloads and uploads, and reduce streaming or other heavy use on the same connection while testing.
  3. Restart the modem and router, then test again.
  4. If staying on Wi-Fi, move closer to the router and compare the available 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. Epic notes that 2.4 GHz reaches farther but can be more crowded; 5 GHz is faster but has shorter range.
  5. Check for router firmware updates. If your router supports QoS, Smart Queue, or a gaming mode, test whether prioritizing game traffic helps when the connection is busy; not every router offers these controls.

3. Contact your ISP if the problem persists

If high ping or loss remains after local tests, give your ISP the test endpoint, results, and Fortnite’s in-game readings. Epic cautions that its endpoint test uses ICMP, while Fortnite gameplay uses UDP; ICMP may be treated differently, so a normal endpoint result does not prove the gameplay route is healthy.

When should you buy hardware?

Try the free, symptom-matched checks first. An Ethernet cable is relevant when Wi-Fi is the likely cause and your PC can connect to the router; it cannot fix server routing or improve FPS. A replacement router is worth considering only after testing existing equipment and confirming that the connection or router is the bottleneck. An NVMe SSD is relevant if the PC supports it and storage-related hitches are plausible, not as a universal lag fix.
