There is no universal “fix lag” switch. First identify whether you have low frame rate, stutter, input delay, network lag, or a general system slowdown; each has a different remedy. The steps below start with measurements and low-risk changes, then move to drivers, Windows settings, game files, networking, and hardware.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. Windows 10 games can still run, but supported fixes and security updates are limited; use Windows 11 when your hardware supports it.
First, identify what kind of lag you have
| What you notice | Likely cause | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| FPS remains low | GPU or CPU limit, settings, heat, power policy | GPU/CPU use, temperatures, resolution and graphics settings |
| Average FPS is high but motion is jerky | Frame-time spikes, shader compilation, overlays, storage or driver issue | Frame-time graph, background processes and shader activity |
| Mouse, keyboard or controller feels delayed | Display or render latency, V-Sync, low or unstable FPS | Refresh rate, V-Sync, frame rate and supported latency features |
| Players teleport or actions arrive late | Ping, jitter, packet loss or a server problem | In-game network graph, Ethernet/Wi-Fi comparison |
| Performance worsens after several minutes | Thermal throttling, power limits, memory leak or background task | Temperatures, clock speeds, Task Manager and fan behavior |
| Only one game is affected | Game settings, files, patch, mods or server region | Repair files, reset its profile and check known issues |
| All games became slow after an update | Driver, Windows or graphics-configuration regression | Identify the update and test a rollback or clean reinstall |
High ping is not low FPS, and a faster internet plan cannot remove a GPU bottleneck.

Measure before changing settings
- Enable the game’s FPS and frame-time display, if available. A frame-time graph exposes hitching that an FPS average hides.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. On Processes, look for CPU, memory and disk-heavy programs; on Performance, watch those resources while the game is running; on Startup apps, identify unnecessary launchers and utilities. Microsoft recommends Task Manager for this diagnosis (Microsoft performance guidance).
- Record GPU utilization, temperature, clock, VRAM, CPU utilization, RAM use, disk activity and in-game ping. Repeat the same scene after every change.
- Compare an affected game with another game, Wi-Fi with Ethernet, and borderless/windowed with exclusive fullscreen when the game supports both.
- GPU near 95–100%: lower resolution or render scale, ray tracing, shadows, reflections, volumetrics and similar GPU-heavy options.
- GPU usage low while one CPU thread is saturated: reduce crowd density, simulation, physics, visibility distance or other CPU-heavy settings; lowering resolution may do little.
- RAM nearly full with heavy disk activity: close applications and browser tabs, then investigate paging and memory-hungry software.
- Temperatures rise while clocks fall: investigate dust, airflow, laptop power limits and cooling.
- High FPS with uneven frame times: test overlays, shader compilation, storage, drivers and a frame cap.
- Ping spikes or packet loss: follow the network section rather than changing graphics options.
Quick, low-risk checks
- Restart the game and PC.
- Pause downloads, cloud synchronisation, streams and launcher updates.
- Close browsers, recording tools, overlays and hardware-monitoring utilities for one controlled test.
- Plug a laptop into AC power and confirm the monitor is using its intended refresh rate.
- Check the game’s server region and current service status.
- Install pending Windows, game and launcher updates.
Update Windows and graphics drivers carefully
Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install updates and restart.
- Open Advanced options → Optional updates and review relevant driver updates.
Windows 10
- Open Start → Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, then review View optional updates if shown.
- Install appropriate updates and restart.
Microsoft says updates can contain fixes and performance improvements, while optional updates may contain non-critical drivers (Microsoft). Get GPU software from the manufacturer: NVIDIA Game Ready drivers or AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. Laptop owners should normally test the manufacturer’s OEM driver first, because hybrid graphics and power/display switching are customized; AMD advises OEM drivers when its generic package causes compatibility problems (AMD release notes).

Set Windows power and GPU preferences
Power mode
In Windows 11, open Settings → System → Power & battery and choose Best performance while plugged in. In Windows 10, search Choose a power plan or open Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Power Options and select a high-performance plan if your device provides one. Microsoft warns that this increases power use, heat and fan noise (Microsoft). Return to Balanced when battery life or temperature matters.
Choose the discrete GPU
- In Windows 11, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Add the game executable if necessary, select it, choose Options, select High performance, then Save.
- Restart the game. On a desktop, ensure the monitor cable is connected to the graphics card, not the motherboard. On a laptop, stay on AC power and check the vendor’s hybrid-graphics control.
Windows documents the choices as Let Windows decide, Power saving and High performance (Microsoft graphics settings).

Windowed-game optimization (Windows 11)
Under Settings → System → Display → Graphics, enable Optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 windowed or borderless games. Microsoft says it uses a newer presentation path and can reduce frame latency while enabling Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays. It may have no effect on exclusive fullscreen, other APIs or games with their own presentation pipeline. Use a game’s Options entry to disable it for a specific title, then restart (Microsoft).
Fix low FPS and stutter in the game
Match settings to the bottleneck
Change one option at a time and repeat the same scene. Resolution, render scale, ray tracing, shadows, ambient occlusion, reflections, volumetrics, global illumination and anti-aliasing usually load the GPU. Crowd density, simulation, physics, NPC count, foliage and world visibility often load the CPU. Competitive players generally benefit more from stable frame times than maximum image quality; single-player players can use upscaling or a cap to make delivery consistent.
V-Sync can remove tearing but may add queueing delay; a frame-rate cap can improve consistency when the GPU is constantly saturated. Test the game’s own cap, your display’s refresh rate and borderless versus exclusive fullscreen. Upscaling and frame generation can raise displayed FPS, but frame generation does not remove the underlying input and render latency.

Latency features
Use NVIDIA Reflex only when the game supports it; it targets system latency, not internet ping. NVIDIA describes supported games and Reflex Analyzer hardware at NVIDIA Reflex information and NVIDIA’s supported-game updates. NVIDIA Control Panel low-latency options are not a universal substitute for in-game Reflex.

AMD Adrenalin provides per-game profiles and features such as Radeon Anti-Lag, Boost, Chill, Enhanced Sync and Radeon Super Resolution; availability depends on GPU, driver, game and installation type (AMD feature guidance). AMD describes Anti-Lag as adjusting frame timing to reduce input-to-visual delay (AMD Anti-Lag). Apply it per game and measure the result instead of stacking several latency technologies globally.
Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) has no universal on/off answer. AMD release notes document a driver-specific case where disabling it was a temporary workaround (AMD release notes), so test the setting only when a particular issue justifies it.

Isolate overlays and startup conflicts
Temporarily disable Xbox Game Bar, Discord, Steam, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, recording software, RGB tools, browser video, VPN clients, third-party antivirus game features and launchers downloading in the background. Re-enable each item if it was not responsible; do not permanently disable security protection.
For an unknown conflict, perform a clean boot:
- Press Win + R, enter
msconfigand press Enter. - On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then Disable all.
- On Startup, open Task Manager and disable nonessential startup items.
- Restart and test the game.
- Restore normal operation afterward by opening
msconfig, selecting Normal startup and re-enabling services and startup items systematically.
Microsoft explains that a clean boot uses essential drivers and startup programs to isolate conflicts and is not the same as Safe Mode (Microsoft clean-boot guide).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStorage, shaders and memory
Use Settings → System → Storage → Storage Sense to remove temporary files, manage startup applications and scan for malware as Microsoft recommends (Microsoft). Free space can help general reliability and paging, but it does not automatically increase GPU performance. Windows optimizes SSDs differently from hard drives; do not routinely defragment an SSD manually. Clearing shader caches can make stutter temporarily worse while shaders rebuild.

Reduce input delay
- Prioritize a stable frame rate and even frame times over a high but erratic FPS number.
- Set Windows and the game to the monitor’s actual refresh rate.
- Compare V-Sync on and off, and test a frame cap appropriate to the display.
- Use Windows 11 windowed-game optimization only for its supported presentation path.
- Use Reflex or Anti-Lag only when supported and verify the result with the game’s metrics.
- Remember that frame generation increases displayed frames without necessarily lowering input latency.
Fix online and network lag separately
Ping is round-trip delay; jitter is variation in that delay; packet loss causes missing updates and rubber-banding. Test the game’s network graph, another server region and another online game. Stop downloads, backups and streams, restart the modem/router, and test the same match over Ethernet. Microsoft notes that wired Ethernet is often more consistent than Wi-Fi and provides Windows troubleshooting steps (Ethernet guide; Wi-Fi guide).
Reset network components
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands in order, then restart:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
For further diagnosis:
ping 192.168.1.1 -n 50
ping 1.1.1.1 -n 50
tracert 1.1.1.1
High latency to the router suggests local Wi-Fi, cable, adapter or router trouble. A good router result but poor external result points toward the ISP or upstream routing. Traceroute shows a path, not definitive packet loss, because some devices deprioritize its replies. DNS changes affect name resolution, not the latency of an established game session.
Use Network reset only as a last resort
Windows 11: Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings → Network reset. Windows 10: Settings → Network & Internet → Status → Network reset. Microsoft warns that this removes and reinstalls adapters, changes saved profiles and may require VPN clients or Hyper-V virtual switches to be configured again (Microsoft).
Fix lag in only one game
- Update the game and launcher, then use the launcher’s Verify or Repair function.
- Reset the game’s graphics configuration and test a lower preset.
- Disable mods and overlays temporarily.
- Try another display mode or graphics API if the game offers one.
- Rebuild shaders only through a supported in-game or driver option.
- Test another server or region and check the publisher’s known-issue notices.
File verification repairs launcher-managed files; it is not a general Windows repair.
When hardware or heat is the real limit
- Keep laptop vents unobstructed, clean dust from fans and heatsinks, and monitor temperatures and clocks during the slowdown rather than while idle.
- Check RAM capacity and usage, SSD/HDD health and free space, power delivery, and whether the game meets its recommended requirements.
- Upgrade the GPU when it cannot sustain the target resolution and settings; upgrade the CPU for persistent CPU-limited games; add RAM when paging occurs; replace a failing or extremely slow drive.
- Temperature limits vary by component, firmware, laptop design and workload, so avoid universal “safe” numbers.
A cooling stand, faster router or “optimizer” is worthwhile only when measurements identify that specific bottleneck.
Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not use registry cleaners, random command scripts or paid booster utilities as a substitute for diagnosis.
- Do not disable every Windows service or permanently exclude a game from security scanning.
- Do not apply maximum-performance GPU settings globally; use per-game profiles.
- Do not blindly enable or disable HAGS, V-Sync or driver options for every title.
- Do not clear every cache routinely, overclock before checking heat, or assume a VPN, DNS change or faster internet fixes FPS.
Final troubleshooting checklist
- Classify the symptom as FPS, frame-time, input, network or system lag.
- Record FPS, frame times, utilization, temperatures, clocks, RAM, disk use and ping.
- Close background work, overlays and downloads; plug in laptops.
- Update Windows, the game and the appropriate OEM or GPU driver.
- Select Best performance when plugged in and the High performance GPU per game.
- Lower settings that burden the measured bottleneck and test a frame cap.
- Verify game files and isolate conflicts with a clean boot if necessary.
- For online symptoms, test Ethernet, router latency and packet loss independently.
- Undo temporary changes, restore Normal startup or Balanced power, and change only one variable at a time.
