If Layers of Fear crashes, shows an Unreal Engine error, stays on a black screen, or fails while loading, start by checking which release you own, then verify its files, update or roll back the graphics driver, and disable overlays. These steps target the 2023 PC release, which requires DirectX 12. The 2016 game and Layers of Fear 2 are separate titles with different requirements.
Quick checks for a crash or failed launch
- Restart Windows and Steam, then try launching the game once.
- Confirm your PC meets the 2023 release’s requirements, including DirectX 12 support.
- Verify the game’s files in your launcher.
- Update the graphics driver—or test a previous stable driver if the problem started after an update.
- Temporarily disable overlays and monitoring tools, such as Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, MSI Afterburner, and RivaTuner Statistics Server.
- Return CPU, GPU, and memory settings to stock if you use an overclock or undervolt.
- If the game reaches its menu, turn off ray tracing and reduce graphics load. If it crashes before the menu, back up and reset its local configuration cautiously.
- If only Continue or one chapter crashes, test a new game without deleting your saves.
No single fix is established for every crash. Note exactly when the failure occurs; that helps narrow down whether the likely issue is hardware compatibility, the driver, files, settings, or a particular save.
First, make sure you have the 2023 game
“Layers of Fear” can refer to several different PC games. The 2023 release is the Unreal Engine 5 title on Steam (app 1946700). The original 2016 game is a separate release (Steam app 391720), as is Layers of Fear 2 (Steam app 1029890). Their requirements and troubleshooting may differ. In particular, do not apply DirectX 12 or ray-tracing advice for the 2023 game to an older release without checking that game’s own requirements.

Meeting the minimum is not a guarantee of stable performance. A GPU’s name alone also does not confirm the required DirectX support. Integrated graphics, limited video memory, or a laptop using its integrated GPU instead of its discrete GPU can cause problems. To select a high-performance GPU on a laptop, open Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add the game executable if needed, and choose High performance. Graphics-control-panel labels vary by driver version.
The 2023 game advertises ray tracing, HDR, and 4K support, but those features increase graphics demands and are not prerequisites for basic play. The Epic Games Store listing also describes the PC version’s graphics features. If the game launches but becomes unstable, reduce those settings before assuming the hardware is defective.
Identify where the failure happens
- Nothing happens, or “Preparing to launch” closes: Check requirements, files, Windows updates, security blocks, and overlays.
- Unreal Engine fatal error before the menu: Prioritize the graphics driver, overlays, stock clock settings, and a cautious configuration reset.
- Black screen: Allow a first launch a little time to complete, then test with overlays off and settings reset. If the game can reach a menu, try windowed or borderless mode.
- Crash during loading or shader compilation: Check the driver, available storage and memory, and local configuration or shader data.
- Crash only after Continue or at a specific chapter: Back up saves and test a new game before changing or reinstalling anything.
- Crash after playing for a while: Test at stock clocks, reduce graphics load, and check for memory, temperature, or background-software pressure.
- Crash after Alt-Tab: Try borderless or windowed mode, disable overlays, and avoid repeated task switching while testing.
Verify the game files
For Steam, open Library, right-click Layers of Fear, choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files, and wait for the check to finish. Steam may reacquire missing or damaged files. Restart Steam and test the game afterward.

If verification reports that files were reacquired but the crash continues, restart Windows and verify once more. Also check whether security software blocked or quarantined a game file. Verification can repair installation files, but it cannot fix an unsupported GPU, a driver conflict, a broken setting, or a problematic save. Steam’s launch troubleshooting guidance lists damaged files, outdated Windows, and insufficient system specifications among possible causes of launch failures.
For the Epic Games Store, use the game’s launcher menu to select its verify option; exact menu wording may change. Keep cloud saves and launcher accounts in mind before moving or replacing save files.
Update or roll back the graphics driver
- Identify your exact GPU model and Windows version.
- Get a driver from the GPU maker’s official page: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Install a driver intended for your hardware and Windows version. If the installer offers a clean-install option, you can use it for a cleaner diagnostic test.
- Restart Windows before launching the game.
The newest driver is not automatically the right answer. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, test a previous stable version instead. Rollback is a diagnostic step, not a reason to keep an obsolete driver indefinitely.

Disable overlays and return tuning to stock
Turn off overlays and monitoring or recording utilities temporarily, then restart the game. Try Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, and other tools one at a time. If the game becomes stable, re-enable them one by one to identify a conflict. Do not leave security software disabled as a workaround.
If you have changed performance settings, return GPU overclocks and undervolts, CPU overclocks, and custom power settings to their defaults. If instability remains, test memory at its standard setting by temporarily disabling XMP or EXPO. A community post reports a DirectX 12-related crash and mentions a CPU clock above 5 GHz, but that is an anecdote, not confirmation of a known game defect or a universal fix (Steam community discussion).
If the game reaches its menu, reduce graphics load

- Disable ray tracing.
- Lower the resolution or render scale.
- Reduce texture quality if video memory is near capacity.
- Turn off HDR temporarily.
- Set a frame-rate cap.
- Try borderless or windowed mode if exclusive fullscreen is unstable.
Restart the game after applying changes. If the crash occurs before the menu, you may need to reset the saved display settings outside the game instead.

A saved resolution, HDR, ray-tracing, or display-mode choice can prevent the game from reaching its menu. Do not assume one folder path applies to every launcher or installation: configuration, saves, and shader data may be stored separately.

- Close the game and its launcher.
- Use Steam > Manage > Browse local files to locate the installation. Search Windows for a Layers of Fear folder and inspect likely user-data locations such as
%LOCALAPPDATA%,%APPDATA%, andDocumentsMy Games. - Before changing anything, copy relevant folders to a separate backup location. If you identify a configuration folder, rename it rather than deleting it.
- Launch the game and see whether it creates fresh settings. If it works, configure graphics gradually.
- Restore individual backed-up files only when needed. Take particular care not to overwrite or remove the only copy of a save.
This is most relevant if the crash began after changing graphics settings, happens before the menu, or the game works on another PC. Reinstalling may leave local configuration and saves in place, so it is not the same as resetting user data.

If Continue or one chapter crashes
First test whether a new game reaches gameplay. If it does while the existing save repeatedly crashes at the same point, the problem may be limited to that save or checkpoint—but one successful test does not prove the cause.
- Back up the game’s save data before testing further. Preserve the original copy and avoid overwriting it.
- Start a new game and check whether it loads into gameplay.
- If the new game works, record the affected chapter, checkpoint, and exact action that triggers the failure. Do not delete the original save.
- Send those details to support along with the diagnostics below.
A community post describes a loading crash that reportedly behaved differently on another computer, but it does not establish a general save-repair method (anecdotal report).
Check Windows, storage, security, and background software
- Install available Windows updates, then restart. The Steam requirements list Windows 10 with DirectX 12 Agility SDK support for the 2023 release.
- Keep free space available for temporary files and shader compilation; the game listing specifies 20 GB of storage.
- Check whether antivirus or ransomware protection blocked the game executable. Prefer reviewing protection history or adding a narrowly scoped game-folder exception only if necessary, and remove it if it does not help.
- Disable mods, ReShade, third-party DLL injectors, and performance utilities while testing.
- On laptops, confirm Windows is assigning the game to the discrete GPU and that the system is not being forced into a low-power mode.
Do not download replacement DLL files from unofficial sites. Do not disable antivirus permanently, and do not assume the problem belongs to one GPU brand: the official requirements list both NVIDIA and AMD hardware.
Gather diagnostics if it still crashes
Before reinstalling, record the edition, launcher, exact error text, and where the crash occurs. Include your GPU, CPU, RAM, Windows version, graphics-driver version, whether file verification completed, whether a new game works, and whether disabling overlays or returning to stock settings changed anything.
- DxDiag: Press Windows + R, enter
dxdiag, then select Save All Information to create a report. - Event Viewer: Press Windows + R, enter
eventvwr.msc, and open Windows Logs > Application. Check for an error recorded at the crash time. It may identify a failing module, but it may not explain how to fix it. - Crash report: Preserve any Unreal Engine crash report or game-generated log files that appear.

Supply your diagnostics and what you have already tested; support can investigate, but no particular fix or response is guaranteed.
When to reinstall—and what not to try
Reinstalling is reasonable if verification repeatedly fails, files remain damaged, installation was interrupted, or you moved the game between drives or launchers. It is not the best first step when symptoms point to an unsupported GPU, driver issue, overlay, settings problem, or one save. If the same error returns after a clean installation, collect diagnostics rather than repeating the reinstall.
