In Farthest Frontier, happiness covers several needs that change as a settlement grows; “unrest” is best treated as a description of unhappy or stressed villagers, not a separate named mechanic established by the official guide.
Diagnose the problem in the Town Center
Open the Town Center and select the Happiness tab. It summarizes villagers’ needs and satisfaction, so use the category it identifies as deficient instead of guessing which building to add. The official guide defines happiness as “a measure of the people’s satisfaction in living in the frontier.” (Farthest Frontier Happiness guide; publication date and game version are not stated.)
Fix basic needs before later-game comforts
Food, health, and shelter
Start with food, health, and shelter: the guide identifies these as fundamental needs. Prolonged low food supplies or hunger raises stress, while unsanitary conditions and inadequate housing also affect villagers. Address shortages and poor living conditions before investing in optional amenities.
Needs expand as the town prospers
More developed settlements can have additional needs, including shoes, clothes, family support, beer, entertainment, luxuries, and spirituality. Check which category is actually low in the Happiness tab and choose a remedy that addresses it; adding every service without checking can spend resources without solving the problem.

Use desirability to protect homes
Check locations with the overlay
Press G to activate the Desirability overlay, then inspect the area around homes and use building placement previews before placing new structures. Markets and healer’s houses can improve nearby desirability, as can decorations such as parks and shrines. Many production buildings reduce desirability, so keep sources of smoke, noise, or smell away from housing. (Official Desirability guide; Official Overlays guide.)
Choose a mix of services and decorations
Do not assume repeated buildings or decorations provide unlimited benefits. A shelter benefits only once from a service building’s desirability, and some duplicate decorations add no further benefit. Where placement allows, a mix of decoration types may help more than repeating a single type.

Respond to an upgraded home’s abandonment warning
If an upgraded shelter warns that it may be abandoned, restore desirability in its area before the condition progresses. The guide says falling below the desirability requirement for an upgraded home can lead to abandonment. Prolonged abandonment can leave villagers without occupancy and contribute to exposure. The official pages do not provide a current, version-specific numeric desirability threshold, so use the in-game warning and overlay rather than relying on a universal target.
Consider policies only after diagnosing needs
Policies can affect happiness, but they are a secondary lever: review each policy’s wider trade-offs before enabling it. The Town Center guide says each policy can be toggled every 12 months. (Official Town Center guide; the retrieved guide content does not specify a game version.)

A practical order of operations
- Open Town Center → Happiness and note the deficient need.
- Resolve food, health, or shelter problems first, especially prolonged shortages or unsanitary conditions.
- If a later-stage need is low, address that specific category with the relevant service or supply.
- Press G for the Desirability overlay and check home areas before placing buildings.
- Move or avoid undesirable production near homes; use beneficial services and varied decorations where they fit.
- Act on upgraded-home abandonment warnings, and review policy effects only if direct fixes are not enough.
