If Minecraft Dungeons matchmaking is not working, first check what you expect the game to do: it has no public queue for random teammates. Online co-op is for playing with friends. If you already have a friend to join, work through platform compatibility, account access, online-play eligibility, and the game’s multiplayer settings before troubleshooting the connection itself.
Minecraft Dungeons matchmaking not working? There is no public matchmaking
Minecraft Dungeons does not match you with strangers through a public queue. Mojang’s FAQ says the game is designed to be played with friends, either locally or online: Minecraft Dungeons launching May 26. Waiting for a queue or changing network settings will not create random matchmaking. Arrange a session with friends, then use the game’s friend or invitation flow.
Can you play Minecraft Dungeons co-op locally and online?
Yes. The game supports couch co-op and online co-op. Mojang’s launch FAQ describes co-op for up to four players, and Minecraft Help’s current multiplayer information describes online sessions for two to four players. See Minecraft Help’s multiplayer and cross-platform guide for current support details.
Minecraft Dungeons cross-platform not working? Check the group’s platforms
Cross-platform play is supported among Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows. Mojang announced the free update enabling cross-play on November 17, 2020, with the message, “Play the game together on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows!” The launch FAQ’s earlier statement that cross-platform play was not available described the game before that update; it is not the current status. See the cross-play announcement and the current Minecraft Help guide.

Confirm that everyone is running Minecraft Dungeons and can access its online and cross-platform options. Cross-platform play is separate from cloud saves; cloud-save support is not what determines whether a multiplayer group is compatible.
How to enable multiplayer in Minecraft Dungeons
Use this order when a friend cannot join. Menu names and account controls can vary by platform and account type, so check the platform’s current guidance rather than assuming every player sees the same settings.

- Confirm the session is with a friend. Invite or join through the game’s friend flow; there is no public matchmaking queue.
- Check the platform combination. Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows are supported for cross-platform play. Make sure each player can access the game’s online and cross-play options.
- Check sign-in and permissions. Have each player sign into the intended account and confirm that multiplayer and cross-platform play are allowed. A Microsoft account may be required depending on the platform. If a child or family account is involved, review that account’s current multiplayer permissions. Minecraft Help’s Minecraft Dungeons account FAQ covers account requirements.
- Check the console’s online-play eligibility. Minecraft Help identifies Xbox Game Pass Core and Nintendo Switch Online as requirements for online multiplayer on those consoles. PlayStation console play may require PlayStation Plus, according to Minecraft’s general multiplayer support. These requirements can change; check the platform provider’s current terms for your account and region.
- Try the invitation again and note what happens. Record whether the invite appears, whether the failure affects one friend or everyone, and the exact on-screen message.
“Can’t join my friend” or “connection to host timed out”: narrow down the problem
A timeout alone does not show that the host’s router is at fault. The official sources do not identify one universal cause or a verified game-specific fix for host timeouts, nor do they establish a universal DNS change, port-forwarding rule, or hardware purchase as a remedy.
- Only one friend cannot join: compare that player’s sign-in, permissions, online-play eligibility, platform, and cross-play access with the rest of the group.
- Nobody can join: check whether the host can play online in another title and whether the other players can play online. This helps distinguish a broader account or platform issue from a problem limited to this session, but does not by itself identify a cause.
- The invite never appears: verify the friend flow and account being used before changing network settings.
- Everyone meets the requirements but the session still fails: note each platform, the game version if visible, the exact error, and when it happened. Restarting the game or checking official service status are reasonable general support steps, but are not established here as Minecraft Dungeons-specific fixes.
