“Waiting on install” usually means Minecraft Launcher has handed the download or update to Microsoft Store, Xbox, or Gaming Services, but one of those components is paused, queued, outdated, or signed into the wrong account. On a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, the quickest reliable fix is to update Minecraft through Microsoft Store, check the Xbox download queue, and confirm that Launcher, Store, and Xbox use the same Microsoft account.
Do not keep clicking Play indefinitely, and do not uninstall everything as a first step. Work through the following sequence, backing up worlds before any reset or reinstall.

Before you start
This guide is primarily for Minecraft on Windows 10 and Windows 11. The message is most commonly associated with Minecraft for Windows, the Bedrock edition installed through Microsoft Store and Xbox services.
- Minecraft: Java Edition normally uses launcher-managed files and is less dependent on the Microsoft Store installation path.
- Minecraft for Windows uses the Microsoft Store/Xbox/Gaming Services chain, so that is where troubleshooting should focus.
- If Java works but Minecraft for Windows is stuck, do not reinstall Java first.
Minecraft’s PC edition includes Java and Bedrock for Windows, while Java is also available on macOS and Linux. The Store and Xbox steps below do not apply to those other operating systems. See the official Java and Bedrock installation overview.

Back up worlds before uninstalling or resetting
If Minecraft still opens, back up important Bedrock worlds using Minecraft’s available export or backup options. For Java, copy your saves, screenshots, resource packs, modpacks, and custom profiles before deleting or resetting game data. Do not assume that uninstalling the launcher or Minecraft for Windows will preserve every file. Minecraft’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends backing up saved data before reinstalling.
1. Close the apps and restart Windows
- Close Minecraft Launcher, Minecraft, Xbox, and Microsoft Store.
- Reopen Minecraft Launcher and retry the same edition or version.
- If it still says Waiting on install, restart Windows completely.
Expected result: the status changes to downloading, installing, a progress bar, or Play. If it does not, continue with Microsoft Store rather than waiting indefinitely.
2. Update Minecraft through Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates.
- Install available updates for Minecraft Launcher, Minecraft for Windows, Xbox, and Gaming Services if they appear.
- Restart Windows and test Minecraft Launcher again.
Microsoft Store may show Minecraft as installed even when Launcher says it is waiting. Open the Minecraft product page and check whether the button says Update, Install, Play, or displays an error.
If Store says Update, run it and restart Windows. If it says Install, start the installation directly from Store. A Store or Xbox download queue may be handling the real installation.

- Open the Xbox app for Windows.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft.
- Open the app’s downloads or installation queue.
- Resume, cancel and restart, or complete any pending Minecraft-related download.
- When the queue finishes, reopen Minecraft Launcher.
A different Store or Xbox download can block Minecraft. If all Xbox or Microsoft game installations are failing, treat this as a Store, Xbox, or Gaming Services problem rather than a Minecraft Launcher-only problem.

Use the official Xbox app for Windows if you need to reinstall the Xbox app.
4. Make sure all three apps use the same Microsoft account
Check the signed-in account in:
- Minecraft Launcher: the account menu in the upper-left.
- Microsoft Store: the account icon in the upper-right.
- Xbox: the profile or account menu.
The account must be the one that purchased or redeemed Minecraft. A common problem is that a parent’s account owns the game while a child’s account is signed into Store or Xbox. That can look like a stalled installation when the real issue is ownership or entitlement.
Sign out and back in where necessary. If ownership is uncertain, check the Microsoft account’s order history or purchase email. Minecraft’s license-error guidance covers the same-account requirement.
5. Reset the Microsoft Store cache
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exe. - Select OK.
- Wait for the blank command window to close and Microsoft Store to reopen.
- Return to Library → Get updates and retry Minecraft.
The command may leave a blank window open for roughly ten seconds. That is normal. wsreset.exe clears the Microsoft Store cache; it is not a complete repair of Xbox, Gaming Services, account authorization, or Minecraft files, and it does not replace a world backup.
If Microsoft Store cannot install any app, also install pending Windows updates, restart the PC, check available storage, and test another Store app. Microsoft lists account authorization, region availability, compatibility, unfinished Windows updates, and Store cache problems among possible causes of failed installations. 6. Repair the affected apps
Repair the launcher before resetting it. Repair normally preserves more app state; Reset can remove app data and sign you out.
Windows 11
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Minecraft Launcher.
- Select the three-dot menu → Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test Minecraft.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset.
If Store or Xbox is also malfunctioning, cautiously repeat the process for Microsoft Store or Xbox. You may need to sign in again.

The equivalent path is commonly Settings → Apps → Apps & features → Minecraft Launcher → Advanced options. Windows labels can vary slightly by version. Microsoft documents the general repair, reset, update, and reinstall process for Store apps.
7. Run the Gaming Services Repair Tool
Use the official Gaming Services Repair Tool after updating Store, checking the Xbox queue, resetting Store cache, and repairing the relevant apps.
- Close Minecraft, Xbox, and Minecraft Launcher.
- Open the repair tool through the official Minecraft troubleshooting instructions.
- Follow its prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Microsoft Store and Xbox queues again.
- Retry Minecraft Launcher.
Minecraft recommends this tool for certain Launcher updates, game updates, freezes, and stopping issues. Do not download an unofficial “Minecraft repair utility.” Avoid old registry-deletion or PowerShell scripts as a general fix: Microsoft’s Gaming Services removal procedure is tied to particular historical error codes and Windows conditions, and using it unnecessarily can damage service registration. 8. Reinstall selectively
If the queue, account, Store cache, app repair, and Gaming Services repair do not resolve the issue:

- Back up Bedrock worlds and Java saves.
- Uninstall Minecraft Launcher from Windows Settings.
- Restart Windows.
- Install it again from the official Minecraft download page or Microsoft Store.
- Sign in with the account that owns Minecraft.
- Install or launch the required edition.
Start with the launcher. Do not automatically uninstall Minecraft for Windows, Xbox, Microsoft Store, and Gaming Services all at once. Reinstall Minecraft for Windows only when its Store installation is demonstrably corrupted and your worlds are backed up. Reinstalling the launcher can refresh missing or damaged launcher files, but it will not necessarily fix an account mismatch, Store failure, Gaming Services problem, blocked queue, or service outage.

Java works, but Minecraft for Windows does not
This points toward Minecraft for Windows, Microsoft Store, Xbox, Gaming Services, or account ownership—not Java. Update and repair the Bedrock/Store path instead of deleting the .minecraft folder. That folder can contain saves, screenshots, configurations, and mod-related files.
The game opens despite the message
If Minecraft launches normally, “Waiting on install” may be a stale Launcher status rather than proof that the game is unusable. Update Launcher and Minecraft for Windows through Store, restart Launcher, and verify that the installed edition opens. If the message returns after every restart, repair or reset Minecraft Launcher.
Microsoft Store cannot download any app
Run wsreset.exe, install Windows updates, restart, repair or reset Microsoft Store, and check time, region, network, storage, and account settings. A VPN, restrictive proxy, firewall rule, security product, family setting, or work/school policy can interfere with Store authentication or downloads. Temporarily test without a VPN or restrictive proxy, but do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection.

All Xbox or Microsoft games are affected
Use the Gaming Services Repair Tool and inspect official Xbox or Microsoft service-status information before repeatedly reinstalling Minecraft. An outage cannot be repaired locally.
Error codes appear
Record the exact code instead of treating every error as “Waiting on install.” For example, 0x803F8001 commonly requires an ownership or account check, while 0x80131500 can point toward Microsoft Store or connectivity issues. Use Minecraft’s error-code guidance for the precise message.
Was this a known Minecraft bug?
Mojang documented a historical Launcher issue involving “Waiting on Install,” and the legacy bug record lists it as fixed in Launcher 3.4.50 for Windows 10/11. That does not prove that every current occurrence is the same bug. Present-day cases can still be caused by Store or Xbox queues, Gaming Services, account state, updates, storage, network restrictions, or a service outage. Check the historical bug record only as background, not as a universal diagnosis.

Contact official support when the sequence above fails, especially if Store and Xbox disagree about whether Minecraft is installed or owned. Include:

Use the official Minecraft Launcher support guidance and avoid third-party launchers, registry cleaners, generic driver-updater programs, paid “PC optimization” tools, and unverified Gaming Services scripts.
