NET_SendPacket ERROR: WSAEINTR means Counter-Strike tried to send data through Windows Winsock, but the blocking socket operation was interrupted. Windows identifies WSAEINTR as error 10004; it describes the type of socket failure, not one confirmed cause such as bad ping, a broken router, or a defective sound card. The exact message is most strongly associated with older Half-Life 1 and Counter-Strike GoldSrc installations, particularly Windows XP-era reports. It may appear when joining a server, losing connectivity, changing networks, being disconnected, or shutting down the client. Start by isolating whether the problem is the server, your connection, or the Windows/game installation.
What the error means
NET_SendPacket: the game is attempting to send a network packet.ERROR: that send operation returned an error.WSAEINTR: Windows Sockets error 10004, meaning an interrupted blocking socket call.
This is a client-side socket error report. It does not automatically prove that the game server is offline, that your ping is too high, or that your router needs replacing. A temporary interruption may produce the message once without indicating a persistent fault.

First identify which Counter-Strike you are running
The troubleshooting below is primarily for Counter-Strike 1.6, Half-Life 1, and other GoldSrc installations. Historical reports from 2002–2006 use this exact wording in connection with the original Half-Life/Counter-Strike networking stack: AnandTech and Clubic.

Do not assume the same code path is used by Counter-Strike: Source or Counter-Strike 2. Confirm the game title and executable before applying legacy commands. Current Steam troubleshooting is general rather than a direct fix for this old error.
Fastest fixes, in the safest order
1. Establish whether it is repeatable
Note the game version, Windows version, connection type, server name, and what happens when the message appears. Does the game disconnect, close, freeze, or merely print the line? Does it occur on every server, only one server, only while joining, or after several minutes?
A single message during a normal disconnect or server shutdown needs less attention than a repeatable failure on every server.

- Exit Counter-Strike.
- Exit Steam completely.
- Restart Windows.
- Unplug the modem/router for about 30 seconds, reconnect it, and wait for it to finish booting.
- Launch the game and test again.

3. Test another server and another connection
The most useful test is a different network path, not simply an internet speed test. Try another server, use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi, or briefly test through a phone hotspot. Disconnect a VPN or proxy during the test.

| Works on Ethernet but not Wi-Fi | Investigate wireless signal quality, interference, or adapter drivers. |
| Fails only on one server | Suspect that server, its route, or server-specific compatibility. |
| Appears during voice chat or downloads | Investigate bandwidth saturation, old client settings, drivers, or traffic-filtering software. |
These results narrow the fault domain; none proves a cause by itself.
4. Check firewall, VPN, and filtering software
Allow both steam.exe and the relevant GoldSrc executable, commonly hl.exe, through the firewall. Also test with third-party firewalls, antivirus network shields, VPNs, proxies, traffic shapers, and network-monitoring tools temporarily disconnected.
Do not leave the firewall disabled. Steam recommends using application exceptions and re-enabling protection after a diagnostic test; see its firewall guidance.

5. Verify the game files
For a Steam installation, open the game’s Properties from the Steam Library, find Installed Files, and choose the file-verification option. This can repair incomplete or corrupted files, but it cannot repair a router, ISP route, or Winsock configuration. Steam describes file verification in its game troubleshooting guidance.
Reset Winsock if the failure follows the PC
If the error persists across servers and networks, reset the Windows Winsock catalog:
netsh winsock reset- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run the command.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Counter-Strike again.
Microsoft says this restores the Winsock catalog to a clean state and removes custom Layered Service Provider configuration. It can help when third-party network providers or corrupted Winsock settings interrupt socket operations. It is not a Counter-Strike-specific repair, and VPNs, filtering tools, or security software that rely on custom providers may need repair or reconfiguration afterward. Only after the simpler tests, you can consider these additional commands in an elevated Command Prompt:

netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renewThese commands change or refresh parts of the Windows network configuration and may require you to reconnect or reconfigure networking. They are not a guaranteed fix for this Counter-Strike message. Avoid casually running netsh advfirewall reset; it can remove customized firewall rules.
Update software and drivers
Install available Windows and Steam updates, update the network-adapter driver, and check audio drivers if the error began alongside voice or sound problems. Historical reports mention Windows XP, dial-up connections, Sound Blaster drivers, QoS, and routers, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish universal modern causes. One report involving a newly installed Netgear router is an individual case, not evidence that a router brand is defective.

- Old advice involving
rate,cl_cmdrate,cl_updaterate,fps_max, orfps_modemwas aimed at particular dial-up-era configurations. Do not copy it blindly into a modern installation.
Similarly, disabling QoS or blaming Sound Blaster drivers comes from historical user reports, not authoritative evidence that either is a general cause. Change one setting at a time and record the original value so you can undo it.
Router, ports, and institutional networks
Do not open every port or buy a new router as a first response. Broad port forwarding can reduce security and may not address an interrupted client socket. Steam notes that individual games may require ports beyond those used by Steam, so requirements depend on the game, server, router, and network design; consult Steam’s networking guidance rather than forwarding ports indiscriminately.
University, workplace, hotel, and other managed networks may use proxies or firewalls that block Steam or game traffic. A wired connection is also a useful diagnostic where Wi-Fi or powerline networking is unstable. A VPN may bypass a routing or filtering problem, but it can also add latency and create NAT complications, so treat it as a controlled test rather than a guaranteed solution.

If the message occurs only on one server while other servers and online applications work normally, the likely fault domain is that server, its route, or a server-specific compatibility issue. If it appears only during a known server shutdown or one-off disconnect, no permanent repair may be necessary. Escalate to the server operator or network provider instead of repeatedly changing client settings.
What to collect before asking for help
- Exact game and engine: GoldSrc, Source, or another version.
- Windows version and whether the installation uses compatibility layers.
- How often the error occurs and whether the game crashes or disconnects.
- Server name or address, and whether other servers work.
- Ethernet, Wi-Fi, hotspot, VPN, dial-up, or managed-network details.
- Whether the same computer fails on another connection.
- Firewall, antivirus, VPN, packet-filtering, or virtual-network software.
- Recent router, driver, Windows, Steam, or audio changes.
That information is more useful than labeling the problem simply as “bad ping.”
