The right choice depends on what is worn and whether you want to keep the original module. “Drift” describes an input symptom, not a diagnosis: stiffness, erratic sensitivity, or no input may have a different cause.
First, identify what the stick is doing
A stick that physically wobbles or has excess play points toward mechanical wear. Reduced movement range may also involve worn guide slots: an experienced community repair contributor described that wear on an iFixit answer posted August 30, 2010, but it is not an official Nintendo diagnosis: iFixit community answer.
Other symptoms—stiff movement, inconsistent sensitivity, unresponsive movement, or no input—should not automatically be treated as a worn bowl. A repair page for the Miadore Classic controller lists those symptoms, but that controller is not an original Nintendo 64 controller, so its diagnoses do not establish the cause in an N64 module: Miadore Classic controller guide.
Choose between repairing the bowl and replacing the module

Before choosing, consider whether the whole module seems faulty or wear appears localized, whether you want to retain the original, and whether you are comfortable handling and adjusting small parts. The available guides do not establish universal fit or performance for replacement designs.

Open the controller without forcing screws
Disassembly instructions differ. The iFixit repair guide removes nine 4.8 mm Phillips screws; a separate teardown describes seven rear screws plus smaller screws in the Controller Pak slot and uses #1 and #0 Phillips drivers. Follow the guide that matches your controller, keep screws and small joystick parts organized, and stop if a driver or screw does not fit rather than forcing it.
Repair the bowl with epoxy
The following is the procedure documented by iFixit, not a tested recommendation for every controller or epoxy product. It involves small parts and careful fitting.

- Open the controller and joystick box using the matching disassembly instructions. Keep the small plastic parts together.
- Clean the components and remove the bowl as described in the iFixit joystick repair guide.
- Knead epoxy until its color is uniform, then press it into the bowl. Use a marble with a push-and-twist motion to shape the epoxy surface.
- Trim excess epoxy with a knife. The guide says to let it dry for 30 minutes or until hardened; that is the guide’s step, not a validated cure time for every epoxy.
- Apply grease to the epoxy and the joystick contact area, then reassemble enough to check the stick’s movement and stiffness.
- If the stick remains loose, the guide says to add epoxy; if it is too stiff, remove excess. Adjust cautiously and check the movement again before final reassembly.
Replace the complete joystick module
The replacement path avoids rebuilding the bowl, but it still requires matching a module to the controller and preferred stick feel. The iFixit teardown shows a module held by three screws and connected by a cable; its pictured module is third party and may not match yours. Use the replacement guide for removal and installation, disconnect the cable carefully, and fit the replacement in reverse order. The cited sources do not provide a universal compatibility list, current stock information, or performance comparisons across replacement types.

The guides describe procedures, not controlled tests. They provide no measured success rate, lifespan, calibration result, or durability comparison between epoxy repair and module replacement. A repaired or replaced stick may address mechanical looseness, but there is no basis here to promise a permanent fix for every kind of drift or every original controller revision.
