To fix OBS audio crackling, first find out whether it is already present in the audio source, appears in a local OBS recording, or occurs only in the YouTube stream. Then check audio format and stream configuration; reduce PC load only if OBS shows performance trouble. There is no single setting guaranteed to fix every crackle, and a successful short test does not prove a low-end PC can run unattended indefinitely.
Find where the crackling starts
Compare the same audio at each stage so you do not change settings blindly. YouTube recommends checking encoder audio and a local archive when stream quality is poor; using those checks to isolate the first point of distortion is a practical troubleshooting method.
- Record a baseline. Note your OBS version, operating system, audio device and source, sample rates shown in the system and OBS, output audio format, and whether the stream is already live. Make a short local OBS recording. Change one setting at a time.
- Listen to the source. Play the source or monitor the microphone outside the stream if possible. If it crackles there, focus first on the source and the local audio path rather than YouTube delivery.
- Listen to the local OBS recording. Keep the same content playing while you compare. If the source sounds clear but the recording crackles, investigate the local audio device, routing, and OBS configuration.
- Compare with YouTube. Check the YouTube preview or archive. If the recording is clean but the stream is not, inspect output settings and YouTube stream health. A crackle present in the local recording is not explained by internet buffering alone.
Keep the baseline and comparisons: they help distinguish a repeatable improvement from a change that only seems to help.
Check audio format and stream configuration
For stereo live audio, YouTube’s live encoder settings list 44.1 kHz, an AAC or MP3 codec, and 128 kbps. Match the OBS output to these published requirements and make sure system and OBS sample rates agree. Correct formats reduce the risk of incompatibility, but do not repair every source, driver, or routing fault.

- Confirm there is only one audio stream. YouTube’s live streaming error guidance warns that multiple audio streams can cause ingestion problems.
- If you use a backup stream, verify that its audio sample rate matches the primary stream.
- If YouTube reports an encoder or ingest error, use the reported issue to guide the next check rather than changing unrelated settings.
The same YouTube settings page lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps for 5.1 surround; those figures are for 5.1, not stereo.
Reduce PC load only when performance points that way
A low-end PC can be under pressure from scene rendering or encoding, but OBS does not identify GPU load as a universal cause of audio crackling. Look for accompanying evidence during a repeatable test: OBS performance warnings, encoding or rendering trouble, unusually high CPU or GPU use, or other visible performance problems.

- Watch OBS indicators and CPU/GPU use while the same scene and audio play.
- Close only programs you recognize and do not need for the stream.
- Simplify resource-heavy scenes if OBS reports rendering or encoding trouble.
- If performance problems persist, test a lower output resolution or frame rate, one change at a time. Compare the next recording and stream with the baseline.
These are OBS performance measures, not a guaranteed audio-crackle fix. If the recording already crackles without performance warnings, keep investigating the source and local audio path instead of lowering video quality without evidence.
Separate delivery trouble from local audio faults
If local audio is clear but the YouTube stream has problems, check stream health and upload stability. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide treats dropped frames as a sign of an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Network trouble can disrupt delivery, but it is not proof that the network caused crackling already present in a local recording.

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth and leaving headroom. The page recommends 20% upload headroom to allow for the primary stream, a backup stream, and overhead. If connection or YouTube health indicators point to delivery trouble, confirm stable upload capacity and lower video bitrate or resolution only as needed; do not treat that as a fix for a locally crackling source.
Test before leaving the stream unattended
Before relying on a 24/7 YouTube stream, make a representative test with the actual audio source and typical scene movement. YouTube advises: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Listen to both the local recording and YouTube preview, and monitor stream health and errors.

Then run a monitored longer trial under the conditions you expect to use. There is no universal test duration or configuration that proves every low-end PC will sustain continuous streaming. If the crackle returns, compare the new recording with the baseline and revisit the stage where the fault first appeared.
