When OBS audio cuts out, first watch the Audio Mixer meter and make a local recording: these checks help distinguish a lost mixer or capture signal from a problem that affects only the live stream. Then investigate the matching part of the signal path—input device, OBS capture, computer performance, or network delivery. There is no single setting that can be assumed to fix an unobserved dropout.
Find where the audio disappears
- Watch the OBS Audio Mixer meter during a dropout. If it stops moving, check whether OBS is still receiving the intended microphone, mixer output, or audio interface. In OBS, open Settings → Audio to review global devices, or inspect the relevant scene source. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends checking the meter and selecting devices manually when the meter is inactive or the wrong device is being captured.
- Make a local recording with representative service audio. Include the microphones and instruments used in the service, and compare the recording with the live stream. If the recording also drops out, focus on the signal reaching OBS, the selected source, the mixer or interface, its cable or USB connection, and computer performance. If the recording is clean but the live stream loses audio, investigate stream health and delivery to the platform.
- Check OBS’s delivery indicators. Rising dropped-frame counts point to an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Dropped frames are a video-delivery indicator, not proof that an audio input failed; use them alongside the recording and meter checks.
- Check for encoding or rendering overload separately. If OBS reports overload or the computer is saturated, reduce scene complexity, browser sources, or filters, then consider lowering output resolution or frame rate. These changes address computer load; they are not the first response to a mixer meter that has gone dead.
OBS recommends running a short test before a broadcast rather than going live without checking. For YouTube, include representative audio and movement in the test, and monitor stream health during the service.
If the OBS meter stops moving
Confirm the intended mixer or interface output
- Check that the mixer is sending the intended bus or output to the computer. A mixer’s main output and a dedicated streaming or auxiliary bus may carry different signals; confirm the output your setup is meant to use.
- Check that the audio interface is powered and still recognized by the operating system. Confirm that the cable and USB connection are secure, then verify that OBS is using that device rather than a different microphone or system input.
- In OBS, review Settings → Audio and the audio source in the scene. Select the correct device explicitly instead of relying on a device that may have changed or become unavailable.
- If the meter moves but the recording is silent, inspect the selected scene source, its mute state and level, and whether the source is routed to the recording or stream audio track being used.
Remove duplicate capture of the same device
If the same physical device is enabled in Settings → Audio and also added as an Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture source in a scene, disable one capture path. OBS warns that capturing the same device in both places can cause echo. If different scenes need different active devices, use scene-specific sources rather than duplicating a device globally. On Linux, OBS uses ALSA or PulseAudio capture sources.
When hardware replacement is justified
Start by checking the mixer and interface already in use; buying new hardware is not a reliable first fix for a dropout whose cause has not been located. If the mixer has no usable computer input path or its existing interface is confirmed faulty, a compatible USB audio interface may be appropriate. Focusrite documents using its USB audio interfaces as OBS audio sources, but compatibility depends on the specific mixer output, interface, operating system, and driver support. Before buying, verify the needed inputs and outputs, connectors, power requirements, driver support, and whether the church needs stereo or multiple discrete channels.

If the local recording is clean but the live stream drops
Test the church’s connection during service hours
Measure stable upload capacity at the church during the time the service normally runs. A speed test at another time or on another connection may not reflect local congestion or the route to the selected ingest server. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for video bitrate, not as a guarantee: the usable amount depends on stable capacity and other network use. Leave headroom for the rest of the church’s connection and test the chosen bitrate with the actual setup.
Work through the network path
- Use a wired network connection for the streaming computer if practical; OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable.
- Check the selected server or service, VPN, security software, router and other network devices. If the problem persists, ask the ISP about the route and connection stability during the affected service window.
- Dynamic bitrate can reduce video quality to help keep a stream going when connection conditions change. It is a mitigation, not a repair for an underlying network fault.
- Change one factor at a time and repeat a representative test so you can tell whether the change affected the dropout.
Keep audio levels and YouTube settings in perspective
Clipping is not the same as a dropout
Keep peaks below 0 dBFS at the delivered output. OBS explains that audio above digital full scale can clip and sound distorted. Clipping can make a service sound harsh, but it is different from an intermittent missing signal; lowering the level will not restore a source that has stopped reaching OBS.

If the destination is YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio, recommends RTMPS, and specifies 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. Its published recommended audio bitrates are 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1. Treat these as platform encoder specifications, not as a diagnosis or a universal fix for an OBS dropout. Keep the operating-system device format, OBS audio configuration, and intended stream format coherent, and check YouTube’s current guidance for the format you actually use.
The destination was not specified in the question. If the church uses another platform, consult that platform’s current encoder and live-stream guidance rather than assuming YouTube’s settings apply.

Common symptoms and what to check next
| What you observe | What it points toward | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The OBS meter stops during the dropout, and the local recording also loses sound | The mixer or interface signal, device recognition, cable or USB connection, or OBS source selection | Confirm the mixer bus and output, then verify the selected device and connection in OBS and the operating system. |
| The meter moves and the local recording is clean, but viewers report missing audio | Live delivery or platform-side stream health | Check OBS delivery indicators, the ingest path, sustained upload capacity, and the platform’s stream-health information. |
| OBS shows rising dropped frames | An unstable ingest connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain | Test the connection during service hours, leave upload headroom, and check the wired connection, server selection, VPN, security software, network devices, and ISP route. |
| OBS reports rendering or encoding overload | Computer or scene workload | Simplify scenes and reduce browser sources or filters; if needed, lower output resolution or frame rate. |
| The sound becomes harsh or distorted without going silent | Possible clipping rather than a lost signal | Check delivered peaks and keep them below 0 dBFS. |
| You hear echo after adding an audio source | The same device may be captured globally and in a scene | Disable one capture path and test again. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube service for looping uploaded videos, not a way to send a live camera or mixer feed. It therefore does not replace an OBS setup that needs to capture the current church service. If the goal is instead to keep a pre-recorded service or other uploaded video looping continuously on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo runs that playback in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload the video, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. In India, UPI is available as well as cards. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to gather if the fault remains
Record the operating system and OBS version, the OBS log from the affected session, the streaming destination, the mixer and interface models, and whether a local recording has the same dropout. Note when the meter stopped, whether OBS reported dropped frames or overload, and what changed just before the fault. Those details help separate a capture problem from a computer or delivery problem; without them, a specific cause cannot be established.
