Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →First check which OBS counter is climbing. If Dropped frames rises alongside a yellow or red connection indicator, OBS is struggling to deliver the stream to the ingest server at the configured bitrate. If OBS reports rendering lag or “Encoding overloaded,” the bottleneck is more likely GPU or encoding performance. Those symptoms need different fixes.
Identify what OBS is dropping
Open OBS’s status area while the stream is running and watch the counters as the problem occurs. Network dropped frames mean data is not reaching the streaming service reliably or the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate. OBS says it drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. A viewer’s playback buffering is a separate symptom and does not by itself prove OBS is dropping frames.
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide describes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the computer and remote ingest server. Its encoding troubleshooting guide covers rendering and encoding load instead.
Fix network-related dropped frames

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Try another ingest server. In OBS, open Settings → Stream and select a different server if the service offers one. For Twitch on Windows, OBS suggests using TwitchTest to compare server quality. If the alternate server is stable, the original route or ingest point may be the problem.
- Lower the video bitrate. Open Settings → Output and reduce Video Bitrate. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee: usable capacity can vary by route, congestion and time, and the streaming service’s own bitrate limits still apply. If lowering bitrate stops the drops, increase it cautiously only while the connection remains stable.
- Test whether the route or service is involved. Temporarily stream to another service, such as YouTube instead of Twitch, if you have a suitable test setup. A stable test elsewhere points toward the original service or route; drops on both suggest a broader connection issue. Verify the destination platform’s current requirements before selecting final settings.
- Use Ethernet as a diagnostic and, if it helps, a practical fix. OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. A suitable Ethernet cable lets you test whether Wi-Fi is the weak link; it cannot fix congestion or a fault elsewhere on the route.
- Check for software interference. Temporarily test without a VPN or security software. If drops stop, configure an appropriate exception and re-enable protection rather than leaving security disabled. OBS also identifies network-optimization utilities, including Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and the Killer NIC suite, as possible sources of problems.
- Review network settings and equipment. Leave Bind to IP at Default. OBS documents IPv4-only as a test; if it makes no difference, return to IPv4/IPv6. On Windows, try the documented Network Optimizations and TCP pacing settings. Restart the modem and router, update the network driver from its manufacturer, and investigate cables, router, modem, network card, switch or extender if the issue continues.
- Contact your ISP if the local checks fail. Congestion or routing beyond your equipment may be outside your control. OBS recommends escalating persistent route trouble to the ISP after troubleshooting.
Should you enable dynamic bitrate?
In OBS, Settings → Advanced includes Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). OBS describes it as a way to lower bitrate during congestion rather than drop frames. It can reduce quality while active and does not repair the underlying connection, so treat it as a fallback rather than a substitute for a stable route and suitable bitrate.
Fix rendering lag or encoding overload
If the network dropped-frame counter is not rising but OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload, reducing network bitrate alone will not address the cause. OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes, and encoding can also exceed the available system capacity.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- On Windows, run OBS as administrator when GPU overload is reported.
- Close other GPU-heavy applications that compete with OBS.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the system cannot sustain the current settings. OBS recommends trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working.
- Simplify scenes and sources. Remove unnecessary scene elements, limit expensive sources and filters, and reduce browser sources where possible.
These changes trade visual detail, motion smoothness or scene complexity for lower system load. Make the smallest change that resolves the performance symptom, then monitor OBS again.
What changes for a 24/7 nature stream?
A low-motion nature scene does not alter the network diagnosis: the configured bitrate still has to reach the ingest server over a sufficiently stable connection. For a long-running setup, use a wired link where possible, leave headroom below stable upload capacity, test the ingest route and check network devices and software. OBS’s cited guides do not provide a nature-stream-specific or 24/7 preset, set an uptime target, or promise uninterrupted operation for any computer, router or streaming service.

For YouTube, also check the platform’s current live-stream requirements and make sure you have the rights needed for the video and audio you broadcast. Nature footage, ambient tracks and recordings can still be copyrighted; a 24/7 format does not make reused material automatically safe.
