First find out where the failure occurs: OBS may be unable to create its local encoder, may start encoding but fail to keep up, or may be sending a stream YouTube cannot start because of a key or connection problem. Those cases need different fixes. The exact error, OBS log, operating system, GPU, selected encoder and OBS version are needed to identify a specific cause; there is no universal 4K60 fix.
Identify which failure you have
Note the exact wording and when it appears. An error as OBS starts encoding points toward encoder creation or compatibility. If encoding starts but the stream stutters, drops frames or reports overload, investigate performance. If OBS appears to send but YouTube reports that its encoder cannot start, check the stream key and connection separately.
Before changing settings, record your OBS version, operating system, GPU, selected encoder and the relevant OBS log. This gives you a way to compare results and avoids treating a YouTube-side message as proof that the local encoder failed.
Work through local encoder initialization
Check encoder support and update software
In OBS, open Settings > Output and note the encoder selected for streaming. Confirm that it is supported by your hardware and operating system. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF and Intel QSV on Windows and Linux, and Apple VideoToolbox on macOS, subject to platform-specific limitations. Update OBS and the relevant graphics or encoder drivers, then restart OBS and test again. YouTube also recommends using the latest encoder software. A hardware encoder appearing in a menu does not by itself prove that the current system can initialize it successfully.
Reduce load to test whether the target is too demanding
- Temporarily lower the output resolution in Settings > Video and try starting the stream.
- If 60 fps still fails, test at 30 fps. OBS specifically recommends trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working.
- Close other GPU-intensive applications, simplify animated or GPU-heavy scenes, and limit the frame rate of a game running alongside OBS.
- On Windows, if OBS reports GPU overload, try running OBS as administrator.
If a lower resolution or frame rate works, that points toward a resource or workload issue, but does not establish the exact cause. These are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes for every initialization error. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

When OBS starts but YouTube will not start the stream
If you use a stream key and YouTube reports an error starting the encoder, YouTube’s guidance is to create a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration. If OBS connects to YouTube by signing in rather than using a key, YouTube directs users to the software provider’s support. Check OBS’s preview, CPU load and outbound connection as well; a local performance or network issue can look different from a key problem.
For the key-based method, retrieve the replacement key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then update the stream key in OBS and retry. YouTube’s troubleshooting instructions are at Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

Restore 4K60 settings after encoding starts
Do not use bitrate changes as a fix for a local encoder initialization failure. Once OBS can start encoding, set the output for the quality you want and use YouTube’s published 2160p60 recommendations as an ingest guide:

Choose only a codec supported by your encoder and workflow; the best encoder option depends on your specific hardware and operating system. YouTube says 4K streams do not offer its low-latency option and use normal latency. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions before a planned broadcast.

Test before going live and troubleshoot by symptom
Run a private or otherwise appropriate test with representative game motion and audio. YouTube recommends testing those conditions and monitoring stream health and messages during the stream.
- OBS immediately reports an encoder initialization error: capture the log and exact message; check encoder compatibility, OBS and driver updates, then test a different supported encoder if available.
- OBS starts, but encoding overload or lag appears: reduce resolution or frame rate, close GPU-heavy applications, simplify scenes, and limit game frame rate. Test 30 fps before returning to 60.
- OBS appears to stream, but YouTube cannot start: for a stream-key setup, refresh the key in Live Control Room and update OBS; also check the outbound connection and YouTube stream-health messages.
- Lower settings work but 4K60 does not: treat this as a performance or compatibility clue, not a bitrate diagnosis. Confirm the encoder supports the chosen codec and target, then restore settings one at a time while testing.
