How to Fix OBS Freezing on Oracle Cloud During a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by identifying which part is freezing: OBS rendering, encoding, the network connection, the OBS process or VM, YouTube ingest, or viewers’ playback. Check OBS Stats and its log, YouTube Live Control Room stream health, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) metrics at the same timestamps before changing settings. The cause cannot be assumed from “freezing” alone, and the guidance below is not based on a test of this exact OBS-on-OCI setup.

What “OBS freezing” can mean

Different failures can look similar to someone watching a 24/7 stream, but they call for different fixes. First distinguish a local OBS performance warning from a connection problem or a frozen virtual machine.

Symptom or signal What it points toward First evidence to collect
Missed frames due to rendering lag OBS is struggling to render the scene. OBS Stats, scene complexity, filters and OCI CPU or accelerator metrics.
Skipped frames due to encoding lag or “encoding overloaded” The selected encoder cannot keep up with the workload. OBS Stats and log, encoder selection, output settings and the actual resources available on the OCI shape.
Dropped frames due to network The connection to the streaming destination is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS Stats and log, bitrate, outbound route and YouTube stream health.
OBS or the whole VM stops responding A process, guest OS, resource or infrastructure problem may be involved; the counter alone will not diagnose it. Whether the OBS window and VM respond, timestamped logs, OCI metrics and instance health signals.
Viewers report buffering, but OBS output appears healthy Viewer playback conditions or platform delivery may be involved; this is not by itself proof that OBS froze. YouTube Live Control Room health, encoder output and reports from affected viewers.

Record the OBS Stats counters and relevant log messages, the exact failure times, your OCI instance shape and CPU baseline, and the YouTube Live Control Room health state. Keep a copy of the log before restarting OBS or the VM.

Check YouTube and OCI at the same time

  1. Observe the failure before intervening. Note whether OBS reports rendering lag, encoding lag or network-dropped frames. Separately check if OBS itself or the entire VM has stopped responding.
  2. Inspect YouTube Live Control Room. Check stream health and whether the outgoing stream looks and sounds right. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring health during it; see YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
  3. Match timestamps to OCI signals. Review CPU utilization, network activity and throughput, and any instance health or maintenance signals. OCI instance metrics require the monitoring agent/plugin and prerequisites, or the documented agentless option; see OCI Compute Instance Metrics and OCI Compute Instance Health Metrics.
  4. Change one relevant variable at a time. Keep a rollback point for VM and encoder settings, then compare the counters and health signals after the change.

Fix rendering or encoding lag

Rendering and encoding warnings suggest OBS cannot complete its work fast enough. OBS says that “Frame rate also impacts both rendering and encoding performance” in its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide. On a cloud VM, verify what the selected OCI shape actually provides before assuming a hardware encoder is available.

  1. Check the encoder and actual resources. In OBS, inspect the selected encoder and output configuration. Confirm the VM’s available CPU and any GPU or accelerator resources; do not select or rely on a hardware encoder that the shape does not provide.
  2. Reduce the workload in measured steps. Lower output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, remove expensive filters, and reduce or disable browser sources and other resource-heavy workloads. Compare OBS counters with OCI metrics after each change.
  3. Inspect full-canvas sources. OBS notes that “Browser and Media Sources that take up the entire Base (Canvas) Resolution (usually 1080p) with, empty spaces use a lot of resources.” Review whether these sources are necessary and whether their size or use can be reduced.
  4. Use operating-system-specific advice carefully. OBS’s “Run as administrator” suggestion applies to Windows, not as a general fix for Linux cloud guests.

If the OBS log and time-matched OCI CPU metrics show sustained resource pressure, compare available capacity before resizing or changing shape. If they do not, avoid treating a resize as a proven cure.

Fix dropped frames and stream disconnects

OBS defines network-dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That statement concerns the dropped-frames counter and connection instability; it does not prove that the VM or OBS can never be involved in connectivity trouble.

  1. Check the actual outbound path. Inspect the instance route, egress connectivity and stream destination. Measure sustained throughput on the route used by OBS rather than inferring streaming capacity from an advertised cloud network specification.
  2. Test a lower bitrate. Reduce OBS bitrate and check whether the network-dropped counter improves. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a general starting point, but for a cloud VM use measured sustained path capacity and stay within YouTube’s codec and bitrate guidance.
  3. Try relevant connection checks. OBS recommends trying a different server and checking for possible VPN or security-software interference. Cloud environments may not expose the same controls as a desktop installation, so use only options available for the guest OS and route.
  4. Consider dynamic bitrate as a compromise. OBS describes it as a way to reduce dropped frames when congestion cannot be resolved. It can lower stream quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem.

Some OBS network options are Windows-only; do not look for or prescribe those controls as if they were available to Linux cloud users.

Check output settings against YouTube’s current guidance

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, lists the following H.264 bitrate ranges. They are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular OCI route can sustain them.

For H.264, YouTube lists CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds, and supports RTMP/RTMPS. Its live encoder guidance also lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 with codec-specific constraints. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings before changing codec or output settings, because platform recommendations can change. Match the bitrate to both YouTube’s guidance and the capacity you have measured on the outgoing path.

Is OBS freezing because the OCI server is too weak?

Possibly, but the instance shape alone does not establish the cause. Check actual CPU utilization and OBS logs around the freeze. If you use a burstable shape, compare its configured CPU baseline with the sustained encoding workload.

OCI describes burstable instances as providing a baseline with the ability to burst temporarily. Continuous burst is limited to at most one hour; burst availability depends on usage patterns and underlying server resources, and Oracle says it is not guaranteed at a particular time. A low-baseline burstable VM is therefore a plausible risk for continuous encoding, not a diagnosis. See OCI’s Burstable Instances documentation.

Resize or change instance type only after correlating the observed workload with metrics. A shape change or reboot can interrupt a 24/7 stream, so preserve logs and other evidence first.

If OBS or the VM itself has stopped responding

A stalled process or unreachable VM is different from an OBS performance counter. Check OS and network access, OCI instance health and maintenance signals, and the timestamped logs. If the instance is unreachable, OCI describes diagnostic reboot as rebuilding and restarting it, which causes short downtime. Oracle instructs operators to use it as a final troubleshooting attempt after OS and network checks—not as a routine OBS performance adjustment. Keep in mind that restarting can interrupt the live stream.

If viewers buffer while OBS looks healthy

Do not treat viewer reports alone as evidence that OBS is freezing. Compare OBS’s outgoing picture and sound with YouTube Live Control Room health. If the encoder output itself looks wrong, inspect the source media and encoder load. If it looks healthy, investigate the outbound connection and YouTube’s reported stream health. Viewer playback conditions, including the audience’s devices and connections, can differ from the encoder’s output; YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance is a useful separate check.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube without maintaining an OBS VM, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It is designed for uploaded videos, not live camera input, and streams to YouTube only. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
