“Starting the output failed” is not one specific NVENC fault. It is a wrapper message that can be caused by an unsupported GPU, a damaged or incompatible NVIDIA driver, another program using the encoder, a laptop’s wrong GPU assignment, invalid encoder settings, an OBS regression, or a separate rendering and disk problem. Open the OBS log first, identify the exact NVENC line, and then apply the least destructive fix that matches it.
This guide covers the major practical OBS/NVENC failure classes relevant to 2023. Menu names and codec support vary by OBS release, Windows version, driver branch, GPU generation, and laptop design.
Find the exact NVENC error in your OBS log
Reproduce the failure once, stop the failed output, then open Help → Log Files in OBS. Use the log from the session in which the error occurred. Search for NVENC, obs-nvenc, nvEncode, Failed, NV_ENC_ERR, and encoder.
- Record your OBS version, Windows version, GPU model, NVIDIA driver version, selected encoder, and whether streaming, recording, Replay Buffer, or multiple outputs were active.
- Copy the first NVENC-related failure and several lines around it. The first error is usually more useful than the final “Starting the output failed” message.
- Keep the log available if you need to compare a driver, OBS version, or profile change.
OBS’s troubleshooting index separates generic output failures from encoding performance and GPU-selection problems: OBS troubleshooting guides.

No row is conclusive by itself. The same code can result from different combinations of OBS, the driver, Windows, GPU, codec, and concurrent applications.
Quick fixes to try first
- Close OBS and restart Windows.
- Exit NVIDIA ShadowPlay or overlay recording, NVIDIA Broadcast, Discord, browser capture, game-launcher capture, video editors, transcoding tools, Streamlabs Desktop, virtual-camera software, and any second OBS instance. End leftover processes in Task Manager if necessary.
- Start OBS with no stream, Replay Buffer, virtual camera, or plugins active. Choose Start Recording and test a local file.
- Confirm the recording folder exists, is writable, and has free space. Use MKV for the test.
- Remove custom FFmpeg options and return to a standard NVIDIA NVENC H.264 encoder.
If H.264 works after another recorder is closed, resource contention was likely. This is a diagnostic result, not proof of a universal fixed NVENC session limit; practical limits vary by GPU, codec, resolution, driver, and workload.
Check whether the GPU supports NVENC
Identify the exact model in Task Manager → Performance → GPU, Device Manager, the NVIDIA App, or with:
nvidia-smi
nvidia-smi reports visible NVIDIA hardware and driver information, but a successful result does not prove that OBS can initialize NVENC. You can also run dxdiag for display-driver details and winver to record the Windows build.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
OBS lists GeForce 750 Ti, 900-series Maxwell, or newer as its general NVIDIA hardware-encoding range, while recommending newer NVENC generations for better results. Compatibility still depends on the OBS release, driver, operating system, GPU variant, and codec. Consult OBS’s hardware-encoding guide and NVIDIA’s encode/decode support matrix.

Do not assume every NVIDIA-branded card has the same encoder. The first revision of the GTX 1650 uses an older NVENC generation than later revisions. H.264, HEVC, and AV1 support are separate capabilities.
Kepler support must not be backdated: OBS later announced that 30.2 would be the last release supporting NVIDIA Kepler GPUs, including GTX 600/700-series and Quadro K-series hardware, and OBS 31 removed that support. That later change does not describe the 2023 rule; it explains why current behavior can differ from an old guide (OBS discussion).
Fix “Failed to open NVENC codec”
Repair the NVIDIA driver
NVENC’s Windows library, including nvEncodeAPI.dll, is installed through the NVIDIA display driver. A damaged or mismatched driver can therefore break OBS even when the GPU itself is working. NVIDIA documents this driver dependency and the encoder lifecycle in its NVENC Video Encoder API guide.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Install it, choosing Custom installation → Perform a clean installation when that option is offered, then restart Windows.
- Retest the same basic H.264 profile.
Do not assume the newest driver is always best. If the failure began immediately after an update, download a known compatible earlier package from NVIDIA’s driver archive and test it.
Escalate to full driver removal only when justified
Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is an escalation tool for repeated driver failures, incomplete updates, vendor changes, or errors that persist after a clean NVIDIA installation. Back up anything needed, follow the utility’s instructions, install the driver again, and retest. DDU is not a guaranteed cure for an unsupported GPU or invalid OBS setting.

Eliminate competing encoder clients
Exit ShadowPlay, NVIDIA Broadcast, Discord, browser hardware video features, screen recorders, game launchers, video editors, replay utilities, virtual cameras, Streamlabs, and other OBS instances. Then test only Start Recording. Add streaming, Replay Buffer, and other outputs one at a time.
Fix “Function not implemented” or a driver-support error
This wording commonly indicates that the requested API function is unavailable through the selected hardware and driver. Check the exact GPU model, driver installation, OBS build, and codec. A legacy GPU may support H.264 but not the HEVC or AV1 option you selected. A missing Linux driver library or incompatible package can produce a similar symptom.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not infer codec support from the presence of an NVIDIA logo. Test NVIDIA NVENC H.264 first. If H.264 works, test HEVC and then AV1 only when the support matrix confirms that the hardware and software can provide them.
Reset invalid encoder parameters
For NV_ENC_ERR_INVALID_PARAM, use a controlled baseline:
- Set Output Mode to Simple, if available.
- Choose NVIDIA NVENC H.264.
- Disable custom FFmpeg options, look-ahead, unusual tuning options, and experimental features.
- Use a moderate resolution and frame rate and record to MKV.
- Test locally before testing a livestream.
Switch to Settings → Output → Advanced only after the baseline works. A profile can initialize successfully and fail later during parameter setup, buffer allocation, or frame submission. Change one setting at a time; a profile copied from another GPU may contain unsupported options.

Fix NV_ENC_ERR_INVALID_DEVICE and device-loss failures
Check whether Windows assigned OBS and the game to incompatible adapters, whether the driver reset, or whether the GPU is unstable under load. Remove overclocks temporarily, lower the game’s graphics settings, cap its frame rate, and test with the game paused or closed. Reinstall or roll back the driver when the log shows a reset or the failure follows a driver change.
NVENC initialization failure is different from encoding lag. If OBS opens the encoder but misses frames, reduce output resolution or frame rate, lower the encoder preset, reduce browser-source and filter load, or free GPU capacity.
Correct laptop and dual-GPU assignment
Laptops often use an integrated GPU for desktop work and a discrete NVIDIA GPU for games. OBS and the captured program can land on different adapters. On Windows 10 version 1809 and later, including Windows 11:
- Close OBS.
- Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Add a classic desktop application and browse to
C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe. - Choose High performance when using Game Capture or Window Capture with a game running on the discrete GPU.
- For Display Capture, use the adapter assignment appropriate to that display and system; “always use the NVIDIA GPU” is not universally correct.
- Restart OBS and retest.
See OBS’s GPU selection guide for the capture-mode distinction.

A corrupt profile, scene collection, plugin, script, browser source, or filter can make a valid encoder configuration fail. Back up profiles and scene collections first, then create a new scene collection, disable third-party plugins, and test without browser sources or filters. Portable mode or a fresh installation can isolate configuration problems. Do not delete all OBS folders without a backup.

If the failure started immediately after an OBS upgrade, install the previous stable release from the official releases page, using the same driver and basic settings. If the older build works, record both version numbers and submit the log with a bug report. Later release notes show that NVENC validation, logging, and error messages can change between OBS versions (OBS 31.0.2 notes).
Choose the right codec
| Test order | Codec | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | NVENC H.264 | Broadest compatibility and the correct baseline. |
| 2 | NVENC HEVC | Requires hardware, driver, and output support beyond H.264. |
| 3 | NVENC AV1 | Requires newer NVIDIA hardware and compatible OBS/output support. |
Do not choose AV1 solely for efficiency. Streaming-service ingest, editing software, and viewer playback must also support it. Change only one codec or option per test.
When the problem is not NVENC
- Rendering lag: OBS cannot render scenes quickly enough. Reduce game GPU load, browser sources, filters, or output complexity.
- Encoding lag: Frames reach the encoder but are not completed on time. Lower resolution, frame rate, or preset demand.
- Dropped frames: Usually a network or stream-output issue, not NVENC initialization.
- Disk-write failure: Check the path, permissions, free space, and drive health.
- GPU saturation: Cap the game frame rate, lower graphics settings, or test with the game closed.
Running OBS as administrator can be a targeted capture-compatibility test, but it does not repair missing driver libraries, unsupported hardware, invalid parameters, or a broken driver.
Use an alternative encoder only when the evidence supports it
x264
Use x264 when NVENC is unavailable, the GPU is unsupported, the driver cannot be repaired, or a confirmed NVENC regression remains. It shifts work to the CPU. OBS notes that older hardware encoders can deliver lower quality at the same bitrate than software encoding with the default x264 veryfast preset, while newer hardware encoders are generally efficient.

Quick Sync is an option when an enabled Intel integrated GPU and Intel graphics driver are present. OBS lists Intel Core-i 2xxx/Sandy Bridge or newer as a broad baseline and recommends Haswell/Core-i 4xxx or newer for better quality.
Hardware replacement
Consider a GPU upgrade only after logs, compatibility checks, driver isolation, GPU assignment, and a basic H.264 test show that the existing card lacks NVENC, lacks the required codec, falls below the OBS baseline, or cannot handle the required simultaneous workload. Compare models with NVIDIA’s official support matrix; OBS, NVIDIA drivers, and DDU are free downloads.
