For Steam crashes, start by updating Owlboy: D-Pad Studio’s May 2022 patches addressed a backtracking crash and described an optional original Steam build for players who still had trouble. For a missing Nintendo Switch save, follow Nintendo’s general save-data checks—but do not delete the user account, which also deletes that user’s saves. The available guidance is platform-specific; it does not establish one fix for every version of Owlboy.
Owlboy crashes on Steam or PC
- Update the game through your Steam Library. Then note your operating system and where in the game the crash occurs. Steam lists Owlboy for Windows, macOS, and SteamOS/Linux, but meeting the store page’s minimum requirements does not guarantee crash-free play. Steam’s Owlboy page provides the official support route.
- Check whether the crash matches the one addressed by D-Pad Studio. In a May 25, 2022 announcement, the studio said a patch fixed a crash that could occur while backtracking and prevent a return to the final dungeon. It said the build might also fix other crash or stability issues on some PCs. This is a historical patch note, not confirmation that every crash is fixed. D-Pad Studio’s Owlboy patch announcements
- If crashes persist, consider the older Steam build only as a troubleshooting option. In a May 4, 2022 announcement, D-Pad Studio said Steam players could choose the original XNA-based version from before the 2022 update when starting the game. The announcement names the launch choices “Play Owlboy” and “Play Owlboy (original version).” This was Steam-specific guidance; it is not established as a fix for GOG or console versions, and the older build is not guaranteed to resolve the problem. - Contact D-Pad Studio if the problem remains. Use the developer support link on Steam’s Owlboy support page. Include your operating system, the game version shown by your platform, and the point where the crash occurs. Avoid editing save files or making undocumented changes.
Nintendo Switch: missing or unreadable Owlboy save
The steps below are Nintendo’s general Switch save-data guidance, not Owlboy-specific instructions. Before changing accounts or data, note which user profile you were using when you played.
- Check for updates. Check the Switch system software and Owlboy for available updates using the console’s normal update options.
- Check the software for corrupt data. Use the Switch Data Management options to check Owlboy for corrupt data, following Nintendo’s instructions. Nintendo Support’s “Game Save Data is Missing or Cannot Be Read (Corrupted Save Data) on Nintendo Switch”
- Confirm the selected user. Nintendo says save data is tied to the user account that created it. Make sure you selected that account.
- Consider a cloud backup only if eligible. Nintendo says a backup can be downloaded if the software supports Save Data Cloud and the account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Cloud recovery is conditional; it is not available for every game or account.
Do not delete the user account as a troubleshooting shortcut. Nintendo warns that deleting a user account also deletes its associated save data. Nintendo Support’s Switch save-data guidance
Owlboy update problems on other platforms
Current Owlboy version numbers and update procedures for every storefront are not established here, nor is the current patch status for Switch. Use the platform’s official update mechanism, record the installed version and platform, and consult D-Pad Studio support if the update will not install or the issue continues. Steam’s Owlboy support page links to the developer’s support route: Steam Support – Owlboy. Do not uninstall the game, overwrite saves, or edit files without a verified procedure for your platform.
