First find out whether the problem is on the broadcaster’s connection, the streaming service’s ingest path, or only on viewers’ devices. In OBS, check that the counter or log actually shows network-dropped frames; then test Ethernet, pause competing traffic, and lower the stream bitrate if your upload path cannot sustain it. These are diagnostic steps, not guarantees: packet loss beyond your home network may need investigation by your ISP or streaming provider.
Identify who is affected before changing settings
Packet loss can show up as dropped frames, stuttering, buffering, freezing, or a disconnected stream. Those symptoms do not, by themselves, identify where the fault is. A broadcaster’s network, the route to the ingest server, the service, and an individual viewer’s connection can produce similar complaints.
Check the broadcaster’s OBS statistics and log
Look for the network or connection dropped-frames counter in OBS and review the log around the time the stream stuttered. OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or that the stream cannot keep up with its configured bitrate. This differs from rendering lag or encoding overload, so verify which OBS counter is increasing before changing network equipment. OBS’s official “Stream Connection Troubleshooting” page, dated September 30, 2024, explains this distinction.
Ask whether the issue affects one viewer or many
If only one viewer or a small group reports buffering, check their local connection and playback device before changing the broadcast setup. If many viewers experience trouble at the same time, investigate the broadcast feed, ingest service, or shared delivery path. Amazon IVS’s “Troubleshooting IVS Low-Latency Streaming” guidance makes this broadcaster-versus-viewer distinction; it is useful for diagnosis, but its service-specific metrics and behavior should not be treated as universal rules for every platform.

Test the local network first
- Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet for a comparable test. Keep the stream settings and other conditions as similar as possible, then see whether OBS’s network-dropped-frames counter changes. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable can provide the wired connection needed for this test. A better local link can help isolate Wi-Fi interference, but it cannot repair loss or congestion on your ISP’s network or a more distant route.
- Pause other large transfers. Temporarily stop household or office uploads and downloads, especially cloud backups and file transfers. Check whether the stream stabilizes while your own stream settings remain unchanged.
- Test VPN involvement if your network rules allow it. Temporarily disconnecting a VPN can show whether it is contributing to an unstable route. Do not bypass a workplace or other required network policy.
- Check security and bundled networking software. OBS identifies security software and network utilities as possible sources of interference. Test carefully; if a conflict is identified, restore protection and configure an appropriate exception rather than leaving security disabled.
Change one thing at a time and note when each test begins. If several settings and devices change together, it becomes harder to tell which change mattered.
Set a bitrate your upload path can sustain
A speed-test result is a snapshot, not proof that the connection can carry your configured stream bitrate continuously. Compare the stream’s bitrate with what the connection can sustain while live, and check the platform’s stream-health information during the problem. If the configured bitrate exceeds the path’s available capacity, lowering it can reduce network drops, but the image may look less detailed.

Use Cloudflare’s numbers only for Cloudflare Stream
Cloudflare’s “Troubleshooting a live stream,” updated July 30, 2026, gives guidance for its own Cloudflare Stream service, not universal streaming requirements. In the troubleshooting context described on that page, Cloudflare says upload speed should be at least 20 Mbps. For a bitrate above 15 Mbps, it recommends lowering it to 8 Mbps or 70% of internet speed, whichever is lower. These figures are starting points for that service’s guidance; they do not guarantee a stable stream on another platform or a route with intermittent loss.
Consider OBS’s dynamic bitrate option as mitigation
OBS offers “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta).” It can lower the bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, which may help maintain transmission during congestion. It does not repair the underlying connection and can reduce video quality. Treat it as a mitigation option, not a substitute for diagnosing the link.

Read the streaming platform’s ingest evidence
Use metrics from the service receiving the stream when they are available. A local speed test cannot tell you everything about the route to the ingest server, and one platform’s thresholds should not be applied to another.
Cloudflare Stream: inspect upload and keyframe charts
Cloudflare’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the upload-to-duration and keyframe interval charts. For Cloudflare Stream, it says the keyframe interval should appear as a consistent, flat line between 2 and 8 seconds, and the upload-to-duration ratio should stay below 90%. Cloudflare suggests starting with a 4-second keyframe interval and adjusting based on stability and latency.

Cloudflare’s “Start a live stream,” also updated July 30, 2026, describes creator bitrates as typically well under 12 Mbps and gives a GOP duration of 2–8 seconds. Shorter GOPs can reduce latency but are less encoding-efficient; longer GOPs can improve efficiency and increase latency. Cloudflare’s troubleshooting guidance also notes that a longer interval can reduce buffering or freezing in its context. Treat keyframe or GOP changes as a configuration check prompted by the service’s metrics—not as a cure for packet loss by themselves.
AWS MediaLive Link: compare packet and error metrics
For AWS MediaLive Link input devices, AWS’s “Input device metrics – MediaLive” distinguishes recovered packets, not-recovered packets, and error seconds. Recovered packets were lost in transit but repaired. A positive not-recovered count indicates loss that was not repaired, while error seconds show how long the input was affected. Persistent recovered drops can warn of worsening conditions even if the stream’s quality has not yet visibly suffered.

AWS MediaConnect SRT or Zixi: check latency against round-trip time
For SRT or Zixi contribution workflows through AWS Elemental MediaConnect, AWS’s “Troubleshooting SRT and Zixi with AWS Elemental MediaConnect” advises checking whether the configured minimum and maximum latency are appropriate for measured round-trip time when packets are not recovered. If the latency settings are appropriate, investigate encoder “behind real-time” alerts and output connection errors. These steps apply to those contribution workflows; they are not general encoder settings for every live stream.

If the problem continues over Ethernet at a conservative bitrate, preserve the details instead of repeatedly changing unrelated settings. OBS recommends contacting the ISP when local troubleshooting does not resolve dropped frames; Amazon IVS also notes that network conditions between the broadcaster and service, including ISP or public-internet path problems, can cause instability.
- Record the exact times the issue starts and stops, including the time zone.
- Save the OBS log covering the affected session and note the ingest endpoint used.
- Capture the platform’s stream-health or ingest metrics around those timestamps.
- Note whether the issue occurred for all viewers, a subset, or only in your own preview.
- Include the bitrate, connection type (Wi-Fi or Ethernet), and any controlled tests already performed.
Ask your ISP to investigate the upload service or route if the local link and settings are no longer the likely cause. Contact the streaming provider when its ingest metrics point to a service-side problem. The evidence helps distinguish those cases from a viewer’s local buffering issue.
Choose a remedy based on the fault, not the symptom
| Remedy or check | What it helps establish or change | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet test | Whether Wi-Fi or the local wireless link is contributing to instability. | Does not fix ISP congestion or loss farther along the route. |
| Pause competing transfers | Whether local upload or download activity is consuming capacity. | Only tests contention you can control. |
| Lower bitrate | Reduces the amount of data the connection must carry. | Can reduce image quality; does not locate or repair upstream loss. |
| OBS dynamic bitrate | Can adapt transmission to congestion by lowering bitrate. | OBS labels the option Beta; quality can fall and the connection issue remains. |
| Change keyframe/GOP interval | Checks stream configuration when platform metrics indicate an interval problem. | Latency and encoding efficiency trade off; changing it does not inherently cure packet loss. |
| ISP or streaming-provider escalation | Investigates a route, upload service, or ingest problem outside the local checks. | Requires timestamps, logs, endpoints, and platform-specific evidence to narrow the fault. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative, not a packet-loss diagnostic or a camera-broadcast replacement. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, and automatic recovery can restart the stream if YouTube drops it. StreamNeo sends to YouTube only and does not stream live from a camera.
