How to Fix Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver Save Problems

HeartGold and SoulSilver do not use cartridge save batteries. Check card terminals for saving trouble, and handle the Pokéwalker’s separate CR2032 battery as an accessory issue.

If Pokémon HeartGold or SoulSilver will not save, replacing a cartridge battery is not the right first step: Nintendo says Nintendo DS game saves do not use backup batteries. Check the game card’s terminals, and treat a Pokéwalker battery problem separately—the accessory uses a replaceable CR2032 cell.

Does HeartGold or SoulSilver have a save battery?

No. HeartGold and SoulSilver are Nintendo DS games, and Nintendo says DS and DSi software saving does not rely on a backup battery. A cartridge that will not save or whose save has disappeared should not be diagnosed as having a dead save battery based on that symptom alone. Nintendo’s game-software repair FAQ also says its backup-battery replacement service for game software has ended; it does not identify an approved third-party replacement provider.

What to check when the game card will not save

Nintendo lists dirty game-card terminals as a possible cause of saving trouble and recommends cleaning them. Its guidance does not specify a cleaning product, tool, or method, so do not treat any particular cleaner or procedure as Nintendo-approved. Avoid assuming that cleaning will repair a failed component or recover a vanished save.

If the game still will not save or be recognized after the terminal issue is addressed, the fault needs diagnosis. A specialist who works on DS game cards may be an option, but no particular provider, price, or repair outcome is established here. Nintendo’s own game-software backup-battery replacement service has ended.

Pokéwalker battery problems are different

The Pokéwalker is a separate accessory and does use a replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery. Nintendo specifies a size-1 Phillips screwdriver for replacement. A low-battery indicator, a clock problem, or missing recent steps on the Pokéwalker points to the accessory—not the HeartGold or SoulSilver game-card save. See Nintendo’s Pokéwalker FAQ for the accessory guidance.

Replacing the Pokéwalker battery may erase up to one hour of its game and step data. After replacement, communicating with the DS game resets the Pokéwalker clock to match the DS system. This accessory battery does not store the DS game’s save.

Which problem are you seeing?

Symptom What it relates to Next step
HeartGold or SoulSilver will not save, or the game card is not recognized The DS game card; dirty terminals are one possible cause Nintendo identifies. Follow Nintendo’s terminal-cleaning suggestion. If the issue persists, seek game-card diagnosis rather than replacing a cartridge save battery.
Pokéwalker low-battery indicator, lost recent steps, or clock issue The Pokéwalker’s separate CR2032 cell. Preserve or sync accessory data where possible, then replace the cell using the accessory instructions; up to one hour of game and step data may be lost.
