WS-43689-0 is a PlayStation Store payment error on PS4. It usually means the checkout could not authorize your payment—not that streaming, storage, your controller, or a game installation is broken. Check your billing details, re-register the card once, try another supported payment method, or use PlayStation Store wallet funds. If you repeatedly add and delete a card, stop and wait 24 hours before trying again.
One terminology update matters: PlayStation Now is no longer a standalone subscription. Sony folded it into PlayStation Plus, so a current “PS Now” purchase normally means PlayStation Plus—often Premium if you want cloud streaming. What WS-43689-0 means
Sony classifies WS-43689-0 as “An error occurred with the payment” in its official PS4 error-code guidance. The code can appear while buying, renewing, or starting a PlayStation Store subscription, but it does not identify one single cause. Possible causes include incorrect billing data, a card or issuer authorization failure, a region mismatch, a temporary Store problem, or an account/payment-method restriction.

Before you try the purchase again
- Check your email for a PlayStation receipt.
- Open your account’s transaction history and subscriptions list.
- Check your wallet balance and bank or card statement for a pending or completed charge.
- If anything appears to have gone through, do not submit the purchase again; contact Support if the subscription did not activate.
Repeated checkout attempts can create duplicate authorizations or make it harder to tell which transaction failed.
Official PS4 fix
- On the PS4, open Settings.
- Select Account Management → Account Information → Wallet.
- Review the saved card, including its expiration date.
- Correct the card number, expiration date, cardholder name, security information, and billing address. Enter the address exactly as your card issuer records it.
- Retry the purchase once.
If the saved details are stale or incorrect, remove and re-register the card once. Sony’s card-entry route is PlayStation Store → scroll to the bottom of the sidebar → Payment Methods → Add a Credit/Debit Card; then enter the card and billing address and save it. If the card still fails
- Confirm the account region. The PlayStation account country/region and the card’s billing details must be compatible. You generally cannot change an account’s country after creation.
- Try another card. This is useful when the issuer declines the first card or that card is unsupported for the transaction.
- Try another supported service. Sony’s US payment page currently lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, and Cash App Pay, but availability varies by country, account, console, and transaction.
- Try the Store on the web or PlayStation App. This is a practical diagnostic: it can show whether the PS4 checkout interface is the limiting factor, but Sony does not guarantee it as a WS-43689-0 fix.
Do not assume that a failed card always means the bank declined it. The code only confirms that payment failed; the exact reason may be on the card, account, Store, or subscription side.

Use PlayStation Store wallet funds
Sony allows wallet top-ups with a registered payment method or a PlayStation gift card, and wallet funds can pay for Store purchases. This can help when direct card checkout fails:
- Add funds using an available payment method or a gift card for the same account region.
- Confirm the wallet balance is enough for the subscription and any applicable tax.
- Retry the normal PlayStation Store purchase using the wallet.
A wallet top-up is not a guaranteed bypass. It may not help an account-level restriction, subscription eligibility problem, or Store outage. Gift-card denominations may not match the exact price. For a free trial, Sony’s PlayStation Plus terms say a registered credit/debit card or PayPal account may be required in applicable countries, and the trial can convert to a recurring subscription unless canceled in time.
Wait 24 hours after repeated card changes
Sony warns that repeatedly registering or deleting a card within a short period can temporarily prevent further payment-method changes. If you have been cycling through cards, stop changing them and wait a full 24 hours from the latest change. Then try once. This is Sony’s stated waiting period for that restriction, not a guaranteed cure for every occurrence of WS-43689-0.

For an ordinary temporary failure with no repeated card changes, waiting several hours and retrying once is a reasonable practical step. Sony does not specify a universal number of hours.

If other Store purchases work but a PlayStation Plus subscription does not, check:
- whether an existing subscription is already active or awaiting renewal;
- the next payment date and subscription tier;
- whether you are attempting a trial with country-specific eligibility or payment requirements;
- whether a previous charge is pending.
Do not buy a second plan until you have checked subscriptions, transaction history, receipts, and your bank statement. A charge without activation requires PlayStation Support rather than another purchase attempt.

What “PS Now” means in current PlayStation
After Sony’s 2022 service change, PS Now subscribers moved into the new PlayStation Plus structure. In current US documentation, the tiers are Essential, Extra, and Premium; Sony associates cloud streaming with Premium, subject to availability and network requirements. There is no separate PS Now subscription checkout to repair. If an old guide tells you to purchase PS Now specifically, use the current PlayStation Plus plan page instead.

Escalate through PlayStation Support when:
- the card works elsewhere but still fails after checking details and trying once more;
- multiple supported payment methods fail;
- your account remains unable to change payment information after the 24-hour wait;
- you were charged but the subscription or wallet balance is missing;
- you receive a different payment, refund, security, or account error.
Have the error code, account email, transaction date, receipt or authorization details, and the payment method’s last four digits ready. Never send Support your full card number or security code.

Fixes not worth trying first
- Factory-resetting the PS4: disproportionate for a payment-classified error and risks data loss.
- Reinstalling games, rebuilding the database, or changing DNS: there is no Sony evidence that these address WS-43689-0.
- Repeatedly pressing purchase or deleting and re-adding the card: this can trigger the temporary payment-method restriction.
- Unofficial “free subscription” or code-generator sites: they cannot repair an account payment failure and may expose your account or payment information.

Wait 24 hours from the latest repeated card registration or deletion before trying again. Sony specifies this period for the temporary payment-method restriction.
Will a PlayStation gift card always fix WS-43689-0?
No. Wallet funds can be a useful alternative for a normal Store purchase, but they may not bypass an account restriction and may not satisfy free-trial payment requirements.
