PS5 error CE-106487-6 means the console encountered a problem downloading or installing content. Sony’s recommended sequence is: update PS5 system software, restore licenses, delete the failed download and try again, then use Safe Mode to rebuild the database. These steps address software, entitlement, queue and indexing problems without factory-resetting the console.
What CE-106487-6 means
Sony describes CE-106487-6 broadly as an issue “when downloading and installing the content.” It can appear with a new game, update, add-on, PlayStation Plus title or content shared from another account. The code does not identify one universal cause and does not, by itself, prove that the internal SSD is failing, that files are corrupted, or that the content has been lost.
Start with the official fixes below. Check service status and entitlement as well, because a server or account problem can look like a local installation failure.
Sony’s CE-106487-6 guidance lists these core actions.

Quick checks before changing the console
Check PlayStation service status
Open the official PlayStation service-status page if several downloads fail, the Store is slow, licenses will not load, or the problem started suddenly. If Sony reports an outage or maintenance, wait for the affected service to recover before repeatedly reinstalling content or rebuilding the database.
Confirm the account and entitlement
For a title that fails repeatedly, verify that:
- You are signed in to the account that bought the game or add-on.
- The purchase appears in that account’s transaction history.
- The relevant PlayStation Plus subscription is active and the title is still included in the applicable benefit or catalog.
- If another account owns the content, that account has Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on this PS5.
- The game is not showing a padlock or another indication that it is unavailable.
These checks come from Sony’s downloaded-game troubleshooting guide.
Official fix sequence
1. Update PS5 system software
- Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Install any available update and restart the download.
Menu wording can vary slightly by region or system-software revision.

2. Restore licenses
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- Select Restore.
Restoring licenses refreshes the console’s recognition of purchased or otherwise entitled content. It is not a factory reset and is not intended to delete installed games or saved data.

- Press the PS button and open Downloads/Uploads.
- Highlight the failed item.
- Press the Options button.
- Choose Delete or Cancel and Delete, depending on the screen.
- Open the game’s page or Game Library and start the download again.
For a download that has not started, try Pause, then Resume. If it still fails, use Cancel and Delete and retry. Remove the queue item first rather than deleting the entire installed game. A full delete-and-reinstall is a later fallback for a partially installed title that cannot be repaired through the queue; it requires downloading the content again. Saved data is normally separate from the game installation, but review the deletion prompt and back up important saves before destructive actions.
4. Check available storage
- Go to Settings > Storage and check free space.
- To view the game’s stated requirement, open Game Library, select the game, choose … (More), then View Product. Sony says the minimum free-space requirement appears on the right side.
The console may need more working space than the final installed size while it downloads and processes data. Remove unused games or media, or move compatible games to supported USB extended storage, then retry. Low storage is a possible explanation, not a confirmed cause of CE-106487-6.

5. Rebuild the database in Safe Mode
Use this official non-resetting maintenance step after the earlier actions:
- Turn the PS5 off by holding the power button for about three seconds.
- When it is off, press and hold the power button again.
- Release it after the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the DualSense with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database.
Sony says this scans the drive and creates a new database of the content on the system. It may help with a local content index or storage-related software problem; it is not a guaranteed repair.
See Sony’s Safe Mode instructions for the current option labels. Do not select Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) for an ordinary CE-106487-6 error: those options delete user data, and reinstalling also removes the system software. Repair Console Storage does not erase data, while Restore Default Settings resets settings without deleting games, apps, screenshots, video clips or saved data.

When the symptom points to a different branch
Only one game or add-on fails
Recheck the purchasing account, transaction history and entitlement, restore licenses, delete the failed queue item and retry from Game Library. If the problem remains limited to one title, contact the publisher for title-specific issues and PlayStation Support with the edition and error details. One failing item is not proof of defective PS5 hardware.
PlayStation Plus content fails
Confirm the correct account is active, the subscription has not expired, and the game remains available under the relevant PlayStation Plus benefit or catalog. Restore licenses after confirming the entitlement.
Shared content fails
The owning account must have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on this PS5. Without that entitlement setting, another user may be unable to access the content correctly.

Every download fails
Check PlayStation status first, then update the system, run a network test, verify storage and rebuild the database. A pattern affecting multiple titles suggests a broader service, account, network, storage-index or console issue, but the error code alone cannot identify which one.
The download fails near completion
Delete and redownload the queue item, confirm free space, test the connection, check service status and rebuild the database. A late-stage failure does not by itself demonstrate an SSD fault.
Safe Mode will not open
Turn the console off and on again, check the power and display cables, and retry the two-beep procedure. The DualSense must be connected by USB before pressing PS in Safe Mode. If Safe Mode remains inaccessible, request assistance through PlayStation Support.
If the download is stuck
- Open Downloads/Uploads in the Control Center.
- Select the item and choose Pause, then Resume.
- If it still does not start or fails, choose Cancel and Delete.
- Find the content again in Game Library and retry.
- Run Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection.
- Check PlayStation status, storage and, if needed, rebuild the database.
DNS changes, third-party “error fixer” tools and paid repair utilities are not part of Sony’s CE-106487-6 instructions and should not be treated as proven fixes.

- Do not factory-reset the PS5.
- Do not choose system-software reinstall unless official support directs it or you are performing a serious recovery.
- Do not buy or replace an SSD solely because this code appeared once.
- Do not assume an outage is a console hardware failure; check the live status page.
When to contact PlayStation Support
Escalate through PlayStation Support when CE-106487-6 persists after the official sequence, multiple titles fail, a purchase or entitlement is missing, Safe Mode cannot be accessed, or the console shows broader storage or system problems.
Include the error code, title and edition, account or subscription context, a detailed reproduction sequence, the date and time of the attempt, and a screenshot or video if possible. This gives support enough information to distinguish an entitlement, service, network, download-queue or console issue.
