PS5 error CE-108255-1 means an error occurred with a game or application. It is a general crash code, not proof of a particular hardware fault—and there is no guaranteed fix under one minute. Start by closing the game and restarting the console, then update the game and PS5 software before trying more time-consuming steps.
What CE-108255-1 means
PlayStation defines CE-108255-1 as “An error occurred with the game/application.” The code tells you that software failed; by itself, it does not identify whether the cause is a game bug, damaged installation or save, a system issue, or a hardware problem. PlayStation’s error-code directory does not assign the code to one specific component.
Start by noting whether the crash affects one title or several. A crash that repeats in one game, especially after a particular action or cutscene, points troubleshooting toward that game, its installation, or its save. Crashes across unrelated games—or in the PS5 menus as well—make a broader system or console issue more concerning, though they still do not prove a hardware fault.
Try the fastest safe fix first
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Highlight the affected game, press Options, and choose Close Game if it is still running.
- Restart the PS5 from the power menu, then launch the game again.
This does not delete installed games or saves. It is a low-risk first attempt, not a guaranteed cure; downloads, database rebuilding, and reinstalls can take much longer than a minute.

Update the game and PS5 software
Check for a game update
- On the PS5 Home screen, highlight the game.
- Press Options and choose Check for Update.
- Install an available update, then restart the game.
Insomniac’s guidance for frequent crashes and CE-108255-1 also recommends updating the game and PS5 system software. Insomniac support guidance
Check for a system software update
Open Settings → System → System Software → System Software Update and Settings → Update System Software, then follow the prompts. If the console cannot update normally, PlayStation documents Safe Mode and USB-based update options on its Safe Mode support page. Use only PlayStation’s official update instructions and files; do not install firmware from third-party sites.

Restore licenses for a digital game that is locked
If the game is digital and shows a padlock or a license-related warning, restore licenses: Settings → Users and Accounts → Other → Restore Licenses → Restore. PlayStation documents this path in its license troubleshooting guidance. This can address access or entitlement problems; it is not a general fix for every crash and is usually irrelevant to a working disc copy.
Rebuild the PS5 database in Safe Mode
PlayStation describes Rebuild Database as scanning the drive and creating a new database of the system’s content. It is different from resetting the console, and it does not reinstall every game or guarantee a fix for damaged game files.

- Turn off the PS5 by holding its power button for about three seconds.
- After it is off, press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep; PlayStation says the second beep comes about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the DualSense controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database → Rebuild Database.
Allow the process to finish before launching the game. See PlayStation’s Safe Mode instructions and option descriptions if you are unsure which menu item to choose.
Do not confuse rebuilding the database with resetting the PS5
Safe Mode contains options with different effects. PlayStation says Repair Console Storage does not erase data; Rebuild Database re-indexes content. By contrast, Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) delete user data, and the latter also removes the system software. Back up important saves before choosing any reset or reinstall-system-software option. PlayStation explains the distinctions and cautions on its Safe Mode page.

If only one game keeps crashing
Reinstall the game
Consider reinstalling when one title repeatedly produces the error, particularly if the crash persists after updates or happens as soon as the game launches. Go to Settings → Storage → Console Storage → Games and Apps, select the game, and choose Delete. Reinstall it from your Game Library or the PlayStation Store. Bethesda’s CE-108255-1 guidance for The Elder Scrolls Online includes updating and reinstalling the affected game among its troubleshooting steps.
Deleting the application normally removes its installation, not the separate saved-data files, but check that important saves are backed up before deleting anything. Do not routinely delete save data: if the crash follows one save or location, reinstalling the game may not repair that save. Ask the game’s publisher for advice before removing it.

Check the disc, storage location, and game settings
- Disc copy: Check that the disc is clean and inserted correctly, and confirm the installed game is up to date. A license restore is not the first step for a correctly functioning disc.
- External USB storage: If the game is installed there, moving or reinstalling it on console storage can help test whether the storage location is involved. This is a diagnostic test, not a confirmed cure for this error code.
- M.2 expansion SSD: If the problem began after installing or changing an M.2 drive, test the game from internal console storage and verify the drive is installed correctly. The timing is a reason to investigate, not proof that the SSD is defective.
- Performance or graphics mode: If the game offers Performance and Resolution/Fidelity modes, try the other setting. Insomniac recommends testing Performance and Fidelity modes for its games; availability and labels vary by title. If you cannot open the game, PS5’s default is under Settings → Save Data and Game/App Settings → Game Presets → Performance Mode or Resolution Mode.
If one repeatable action, location, mode, or cutscene triggers the crash, record the game title, installed patch, mode, location, and what you did immediately before it happened. Send those details to the game’s publisher; a reproducible title-specific crash may need a developer update. A second user profile or a fresh save can also help narrow the cause, if the game supports those tests.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If several games or the PS5 menu crash
Use the pattern to decide whether to keep troubleshooting one title or escalate. This is a practical guide, not an official PlayStation diagnostic matrix.
| What you observe | What to investigate next |
|---|---|
| Only one game crashes | That title’s update, installation, save, disc, graphics mode, or a game-specific bug. |
| One title fails every time it launches | Update and reinstall the game; contact its publisher if the failure remains reproducible. |
| Several unrelated games crash | PS5 system software, storage, ventilation, power, or a broader console problem. |
| Crashes happen after long sessions | Check ventilation and accessible vents, but do not assume heat is the cause. |
| The PS5 menu or other applications also fail | A broader system or hardware issue becomes more concerning. |
If crashes began after a storage change, test without relying on that storage where practical. If the console runs unusually hot, make sure its vents are unobstructed and remove dust only from accessible areas. Neither heat nor storage trouble is established by CE-108255-1 alone.
When to stop and contact PlayStation Support
Contact PlayStation Support or start its repair process if unrelated games continue to crash after updates and a database rebuild, if the PS5 also fails in menus, or if you see repeated abnormal shutdowns, graphical corruption, storage warnings, or boot problems. Seek help sooner if Safe Mode will not start or a reinstall repeatedly fails. PlayStation directs users with unresolved Safe Mode or console problems to its support and repair guidance; its repair route is at PlayStation Repairs.

A factory reset is not a first-line one-minute fix. Consider one only after backing up user data and following relevant PlayStation or game-publisher guidance. If the error persists after a clean game reinstall—or affects multiple titles—repeated resets are less useful than a repair diagnosis.
