PS5 error WS-116522-7 means a system-software update failed because the console did not recognize the latest software version. It does not, by itself, mean that a game or disc is broken—or that the console needs replacing. Restart the PS5 and retry the update first; if online updating keeps failing, use Sony’s non-destructive Safe Mode update or official USB update before considering a full reinstall.
What WS-116522-7 means
Sony describes WS-116522-7 as a failure to recognize the latest PS5 system-software version during an update. The “software” in the message refers to the console’s system software, not automatically to a game or application. Sony’s error-code guidance offers different steps depending on whether the update was attempted over the internet, from USB storage, or from a game disc.
The code is not a diagnosis of hardware failure. An interrupted download, unstable network, incorrectly prepared USB update, or problem reading a disc-based update can all interfere with an update. If the official update methods repeatedly fail, a deeper system-storage or hardware issue becomes more plausible and is a reason to contact PlayStation Support.

Try these non-destructive fixes first
- Restart the PS5, then try again. If the console reaches the home screen, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and select Update System Software.
- If the failed update appears in Downloads/Uploads, highlight it, choose View Error Info, then select Try Again.
- Improve the connection. Use a wired LAN connection if available. If you use Wi-Fi, move the console closer to the router and reduce obstructions or interference.
- Restart the modem and router. Turn them off, wait at least five minutes, then turn them back on. Retry the update once the connection is available.
These are the best first steps because they do not erase console data. Sony’s WS-116522-7 instructions recommend restarting, checking the connection, and trying again.

Update from Safe Mode if the home screen is unavailable
Safe Mode lets you update system software without using the normal home-screen menus. Sony notes that a PS5 that has been offline for a long time, or has had a failed system-software update, may need a manual Safe Mode update.
- Turn the PS5 off completely.
- Press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep (the second beep sounds about seven seconds after the first).
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Update System Software. Try the direct-download option first if the console can connect to the internet.
This is different from resetting or reinstalling the system software. Choose Update System Software, not Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), unless you are deliberately undertaking the data-erasing recovery described below. See Sony’s Safe Mode update instructions.
Install the official update from a USB drive
If online updating continues to fail, download the normal PS5 update file from Sony on a PC or Mac. Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, with about 1.1 GB of free space. Create the folders and save the file using this exact structure:

└── PS5UPDATE.PUPThe names should be uppercase, and the file must be inside PS5/UPDATE/—not in the USB drive’s root or an extra nested folder. Download the file from Sony’s PS5 system-software page; do not use third-party firmware files.
- Safely eject the USB drive from the computer and insert it into the PS5.
- Turn the PS5 off completely and start Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep.
- Connect the controller by USB, press the PS button, and choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
If the PS5 says it cannot find the update, check the drive’s format, exact folder names, and exact filename. As practical checks, verify that the download did not acquire an extra extension such as .PUP.pup, download the file again from Sony, or try another USB drive if this one is not detected. A USB update is an official alternative, not a guaranteed fix.
If the update was attempted from a game disc
WS-116522-7 still concerns the system-software update, but the disc matters if it supplied that update. Check for dirt, fingerprints, or scratches. Clean the disc with a soft, clean cloth, wiping from the center toward the outer edge rather than in circles. Avoid abrasive materials. Then retry, or use the internet or USB update route instead if possible. Sony’s error-code guidance includes disc cleaning advice; its disc-reading guide covers broader reading problems.

If the PS5 also fails to read other games, Blu-ray discs, or DVDs, treat that as a separate disc-reading symptom rather than proof that WS-116522-7 is a game error.

Other Safe Mode options are not the primary fix
Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new database of system content. It may be worth considering if the update failure comes with broader symptoms such as missing or duplicated game icons or other system-interface problems. It is not Sony’s primary remedy for this specific update code and does not replace the official update file.
Safe Mode also offers other maintenance options, including Repair Console Storage and Clear System Software Cache. Consider them only when the console has related storage or system problems; they are separate from a system-software reinstall. See Sony’s PS5 Safe Mode options.

Back up before considering a full reinstallation
Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes all user data. It is not the same as the normal update option and should be a last resort, after restarting, trying network fixes, using Safe Mode’s ordinary update, and attempting the official USB update. The reinstallation file is separate from the normal update file; Sony lists approximately 1.2 GB of free space for it. Follow Sony’s system-software page and select the reinstall procedure only if you understand the data-loss risk.
Back up what you can before reinstalling. A full PS5 backup to USB is a separate process from preparing a firmware-update drive; see Sony’s PS5 USB backup guide. PS5 saved data cannot simply be copied to a USB drive in the same way as PS4 saved data. PlayStation Plus cloud storage is another option for eligible subscribers; see Sony’s cloud-save instructions. Do not assume a reinstall will preserve saved games.

Do not interrupt a system-software installation. Sony also advises against installing immediately before or after a power outage.

When to contact PlayStation Repairs
Use PlayStation Support and Repairs if the console cannot enter Safe Mode, if it repeatedly returns to the same update screen, or if the official online and correctly prepared USB update both fail. Escalate as well if the controller will not connect in Safe Mode despite a working USB cable, or if the console has additional storage, power, shutdown, overheating, or disc-drive problems. Repeated failure does not prove a particular part is defective, but it is beyond the point where another routine retry is likely to help.
If you are unsure whether the message is WS-116522-7 or a game-specific or disc-reading code, compare it with Sony’s PS5 error-code list. Sony’s live system-software page is also the right place to get the current update file; avoid relying on a version number in an older guide.
