If your PS5 cannot see an external drive, the official error code is CE-100006-7 (often searched as “CE1000067”). It means the console cannot recognize the connected storage; it does not by itself prove the drive is dead. Start with the non-destructive checks: update the PS5, connect the drive directly to a supported SuperSpeed USB port, remove hubs and other extended-storage drives, then try another cable or port. Do not format the drive unless you have backed up anything you need—formatting as USB extended storage erases its contents.
For PS5 extended storage, Sony specifies a SuperSpeed USB connection of 5 Gbps or later and a capacity of 250 GB to 8 TB. Not every device is guaranteed to work. Sony’s extended-storage guide has the current requirements.
What CE-100006-7 means
Sony describes CE-100006-7 as an error in which the external storage drive cannot be recognized. The cause could be the USB connection, the drive’s compatibility or format, a failed transfer, or a problem with the drive or console. The code alone does not establish which one.
First establish what you want the drive to do. USB extended storage is the PS5’s game-storage mode. A general USB drive used for media or console backups is a different use and follows different format requirements. Formatting one way does not automatically make it suitable for the other.

Check compatibility before troubleshooting further
For a drive used as PS5 USB extended storage, Sony’s stated requirements are:
- SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or later.
- Capacity of at least 250 GB and no more than 8 TB.
- A direct connection to the PS5—USB hubs are not supported for extended storage.
- Only one USB extended-storage drive connected for use at a time.
Use a USB Type-C or Type-A port identified by Sony as SuperSpeed for extended storage; the available ports and their speeds vary by PS5 model. Check the extended-storage guide for the applicable port information. If the drive has a detachable cable, check that both ends are seated and try a known-good compatible cable. For a powered desktop drive, confirm its power adapter is connected and switched on.
A “USB 3.0” label or the fact that a drive works on a computer is not a guarantee that it will work with a PS5. Cable, enclosure, power, capacity, connection method, and device compatibility can all matter. Sony cautions that not all drives are guaranteed to work.

Try these non-destructive fixes first
- Update the PS5 system software. Open Settings > System > System Software, then select the update option shown there—currently listed as System Software Update and Settings—and install an available update. Labels can change with system-software versions. Restart the console afterward. Sony lists updating as a remedy for this error; see its system-software support page.
- Remove connection intermediaries. Disconnect any USB hub, dock, or extension hub and connect the drive directly to a supported SuperSpeed port. Disconnect any other USB extended-storage drive.
- Reseat the connection. If the drive has a removable cable, unplug and reconnect it at both ends. Try another known-good cable if available. Check the drive’s own power supply if it has one.
- Shut down and reconnect. Turn the PS5 fully off, not into Rest Mode, and wait until its power indicator is off. Disconnect the USB drive and, if applicable, its power supply. Reconnect it directly and start the console. This power-cycle is a practical troubleshooting step; Sony’s specific instruction for the error is to unplug and reconnect the USB cable.
- Check Storage. Open Settings > Storage and see whether the drive appears under USB extended storage. If it does not, try another supported port and then test the drive on a computer, as described below.
Do not repeatedly unplug the drive while the console is running. Improper disconnection can cause data loss or corruption. If you can still access important files on a computer, copy them somewhere safe before attempting repairs or formatting.
If the drive appears in Storage
If the PS5 detects the drive and offers to repair it, follow the on-screen instructions, but do not treat repair as a guarantee that all data will be preserved. Once the drive is available, try a small transfer before moving a large library.
If a transfer of several games or apps fails, Sony recommends transferring content individually. Cancel the bulk transfer, restart the console, and try one title at a time. If one game or app repeatedly fails, the problem may be with that transfer or content rather than recognition of the drive itself. Check whether the content is eligible for extended storage and consider reinstalling or redownloading the affected title if needed. See Sony’s CE-100006-7 guidance.

Before disconnecting a recognized drive while the console is on, use Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5. Do not remove it while the PS5 is repairing, formatting, transferring data, shutting down, or entering Rest Mode.

Use comparison tests to narrow down the fault:
- Try another supported PS5 USB port and, if possible, another known-good compatible cable.
- Connect the drive to a computer and check whether it is detected, reports its expected capacity, and stays connected. Back up files you need before running repair tools or changing its format.
- If available, connect a second known-good compatible drive to the PS5.

These are diagnostic clues, not definitive diagnoses. If a drive repeatedly disconnects, clicks, spins down, overheats, or cannot be detected by any computer, stop experimenting if its data matters. Further repair or formatting attempts may make data recovery harder. Consider professional recovery for irreplaceable files; otherwise, replacement may be the practical option.
Format as USB extended storage only as a last resort
Formatting erases the data on the drive. Do not proceed until you have backed up anything you need. Sony warns that data erased through formatting cannot be recovered through the console.

- Connect the drive directly to a supported SuperSpeed USB port.
- Open Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage.
- Select Format as USB Extended Storage and confirm the warning.
This is Sony’s supported workflow for preparing a drive for extended storage. Do not assume that formatting it on a computer will resolve the PS5 error. If the format option is missing or formatting fails, recheck the 250 GB–8 TB capacity range, use a direct connection, try another cable and supported port, disconnect other USB storage, and restart the console. Test the drive on a computer and, if possible, test another compatible drive on the PS5 before concluding which device is at fault.

Do not format a drive as exFAT just because the PS5 does not recognize it. Choose a format based on the job:

- For PS5 game storage: use the PS5’s Format as USB Extended Storage option. Formatting erases existing contents.
- For general USB uses or PS5 console backups: Sony specifies FAT32 or exFAT for PS5 backup drives. A drive formatted as PS5 extended storage uses a different format and cannot serve as a PS5 backup drive in that same role.
Sony also notes that games and apps on extended storage are not included in PS5 console backup data. Read the backup and restore guide before changing a drive used for backups or other files. Formatting as exFAT also erases the drive, so copy needed files elsewhere first.

What external storage can and cannot do
Compatible USB extended storage can hold PS4 games and apps, which can be played directly from the drive. It can also hold PS5 games, but PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB extended storage; copy them back to the console’s internal storage before playing. For additional storage from which to play PS5 games directly, look at a compatible internal M.2 SSD rather than an ordinary external USB drive. A drive previously set up as extended storage on a PS4 or another PS5 generally does not need to be reformatted just because it is moved to a new PS5. It must still meet the requirements and be connected properly; Sony’s PS5 preparation guide covers using an existing drive. A drive containing ordinary computer files, by contrast, is not automatically configured as PS5 extended storage.
When to contact PlayStation Support
Contact PlayStation Support if the error persists after updating the console and trying a direct connection, or if multiple known-good compatible drives fail on the PS5. A problem limited to one drive points more toward that drive or its cable; several drives failing across supported ports warrant investigating the console. If the drive contains important data and is unreadable elsewhere, avoid formatting it and consider data recovery before further troubleshooting.
