If Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege lags on PS4, first check Ubisoft’s live Siege service status and PlayStation Network status. If both are operating normally, test the PS4 connection, restart the console and router, then compare a match over Ethernet. These steps help distinguish Wi-Fi or household congestion from an ISP route, console issue, or game-server problem; no single setting fixes every kind of lag.
“Lag” can mean high ping, jitter, packet loss, rubber-banding, delayed hit registration, low frame rate, or controller/display input delay. The symptom matters: changing DNS or buying a faster plan, for example, will not necessarily fix packet loss or server-side trouble.
Start with this quick check
- Refresh the Ubisoft Siege status page and check PSN status. If a service or region is degraded, wait for recovery before changing router settings.
- On PS4, open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. Note whether PSN sign-in succeeds, your NAT Type, and the reported download and upload speeds.
- Close Siege, fully turn off the PS4, then restart the modem and router. Let the modem reconnect before restarting the router and console.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test a match using Ethernet if possible. On PS4, choose Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Use a LAN Cable > Easy.
- Pause downloads, streaming, cloud backups, and other heavy household traffic during a match, then compare again.
PlayStation recommends a wired connection where possible. Its connection test is useful for basic connectivity, but it does not fully measure in-match jitter, packet loss, or the route to a Siege server. A high download-speed result does not rule out lag.

Identify what kind of lag you have

Symptom guide: High ping means data takes longer to reach the server. Jitter is a sharp change in ping; packet loss means some data does not arrive. Either can cause freezes, teleporting, rubber-banding, or actions that seem delayed. Ubisoft has previously described server degradation with symptoms including abnormal latency, rubber-banding, and hit-registration problems, but that historical report does not show that the same issue is happening now (Ubisoft’s report).

Fix local connection problems
1. Restart the PS4 and network equipment
Close the game and turn the PS4 completely off rather than leaving it in Rest Mode. Unplug the modem and router; wait several minutes, reconnect the modem, and give it time to synchronize before reconnecting the router. Then start the PS4 and test again. For certain PS4 connection errors, PlayStation specifically advises turning off the router, waiting at least five minutes, and restarting it (PlayStation’s guidance).
2. Prefer Ethernet; improve Wi-Fi if you cannot wire the console
An Ethernet test is one of the clearest ways to isolate Wi-Fi. If the same console and game become stable when wired, wireless conditions are implicated. Ethernet will not fix an overloaded ISP connection, poor routing, or a Ubisoft outage, but it avoids wireless interference and reduces one source of variability.
If you must use Wi-Fi, move the PS4 and router closer together, keep the router in the open rather than inside a cabinet, and reduce walls or metal obstructions between them. If your router offers more than one Wi-Fi band, test the band with the more reliable signal at the console; the best choice depends on distance and obstacles. PlayStation also recommends moving a wireless PS4 closer to the access point and removing obstructions (connection-error guidance).

3. Rule out household congestion
Pause large game downloads, 4K streams, cloud uploads, and backups while you play. Upload traffic can matter as much as downloads: a connection can have ample headline speed but become unresponsive when its upload capacity is saturated. Compare play at different times of day. If the problem appears mainly when the household is busy, congestion or router queueing is more plausible than a Siege graphics setting.
4. Update router firmware and check for local restrictions
Check the router manufacturer’s instructions for a firmware update, and make sure the modem and router are not overheating. If the router has aggressive parental controls, traffic inspection, security filtering, or a gaming filter, temporarily disable one feature at a time for a controlled test, then restore it if there is no improvement. Do not leave useful security protections disabled without a reason. PlayStation recommends checking router firmware and consulting the router maker or ISP about connection configuration.
Understand NAT before opening ports
NAT describes how the router handles connections between devices on your home network and the internet. NAT Type 2 is a common home-router result and is generally usable; it does not prove that your ping is good or bad. NAT Type 3 is more restricted and may contribute to matchmaking, party chat, voice, or disconnection trouble. NAT Type 1 is an open/direct-style connection and is uncommon on ordinary home networks; most players do not need it.

If you have a restricted NAT alongside matchmaking, party, voice, or connection failures, ask your router maker or ISP about the router’s NAT settings and whether your connection uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT). If port forwarding is necessary, reserve a stable local address for the PS4 and follow your router’s instructions carefully. Forward only the required ports to the correct console; a rule aimed at the wrong device will not help.
PlayStation lists these ports in guidance for certain PS4 connection errors: TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480 and UDP 3478, 3479, 49152–65535 (source). These are PlayStation service ports, not a confirmed, complete current port list specifically for Rainbow Six Siege. Opening them is not a general ping fix. Avoid putting the PS4 in a router DMZ as a routine optimization; it exposes the console more broadly and is not a substitute for diagnosing the connection.
Try DNS only when the symptoms fit
DNS translates service names into network addresses. A DNS problem can delay sign-in or connection setup, or produce a DNS error, but changing DNS generally does not repair packet loss or lower latency once a match is underway. If the PS4 reports DNS errors or service lookups are unreliable, PlayStation advises checking for ISP maintenance and provides custom DNS settings through Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Custom (DNS error guidance). Treat a different DNS provider as a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed ping reducer. If it makes no difference, return DNS to Automatic.

Leave MTU and proxy settings alone unless troubleshooting a specific error
PS4 custom network setup also exposes IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU, and proxy settings (PlayStation setup instructions). Keep MTU automatic unless you have a specific reason to investigate packet-size errors; random values from gaming videos are not universal performance tweaks and can make a connection less reliable. Select Do Not Use for a proxy unless your network administrator or ISP requires one. Record existing settings before testing. If a change worsens the connection, restore DNS and MTU to Automatic, remove unnecessary port forwards, disable DMZ exposure, and restart the router and PS4.
Older Ubisoft Operation Health documentation discussed IPv6-related multiplayer issues and advised ensuring IPv4 support was enabled (known issues). This is a historical configuration edge case, not a universal instruction to disable IPv6. If your ISP uses IPv6-only service, CGNAT, or unusual routing, ask the ISP whether it could affect console connectivity before changing router protocols.
Check Siege-specific causes
- Make sure Siege and PS4 system software are fully updated. Restart the game after an update.
- Notice whether the problem affects every mode or only one playlist, and whether it happens solo as well as in a squad. Ask teammates whether they see the same symptoms.
- If the current console version offers a crossplay setting, compare with it enabled and disabled, changing only that setting for a fair test. Menu names and availability can change. Ubisoft introduced crossplay between console platforms in Year 7 Season 4; PC and streaming-platform players remained in a separate pool (Ubisoft’s announcement). There is not enough evidence to treat crossplay as a general cause of PS4 lag.
- Do not assume you can fix a poor server route by choosing an arbitrary region in PS4 settings. Ubisoft says Siege selects servers based on player location, and server region can affect latency (connectivity overview).
If a problem is repeatable, capture when it happens, the mode, whether teammates are affected, the connection type, and any error or in-game network indicators. Use Ubisoft’s status page for support and R6Fix reporting links.

When aiming feels delayed but the game does not rubber-band
Network lag is more likely when players freeze, teleport, or actions arrive late alongside network symptoms. If aiming feels delayed but movement and match state remain stable, test the display and controller: enable the TV’s Game Mode, try another display if available, check controller charge and connection, and compare online play with an offline mode.
Ubisoft’s MouseTrap system is a separate case: on console it can add input lag as a penalty for continued mouse-and-keyboard use, with controller matches gradually reducing the penalty (Ubisoft Player Protection). That input penalty is not internet latency.
Use PS4 maintenance steps only if the whole console is affected
If menus are slow, games crash, loading is abnormal, or offline play stutters too, restart the console, check free storage, and install available system software updates. PlayStation Safe Mode includes a database-rebuild option that scans the drive and creates a new content database (PS4 support). Treat rebuilding as later troubleshooting for broader system symptoms, not a first-line online-lag fix. Back up important data before maintenance and do not jump straight to Initialize PS4, which is a much more consequential step.

- Ubisoft: Several players in different locations report a similar issue, the status page shows a disruption, or a particular mode/server problem is reproducible despite a stable local connection. Check the live status page and report details through its support or R6Fix links.
- PlayStation: PSN sign-in fails, PSN services are unavailable, or the PS4 cannot maintain its connection across games.
- ISP: Multiple devices or online games show instability, the problem is worse at busy times, or Ethernet does not help. Ask the ISP: “My PS4 connection test succeeds, but I experience unstable latency or possible packet loss in online games. Can you check for line errors, congestion, CGNAT, IPv6-only configuration, and modem or router firmware issues?”
A phone hotspot can be a short comparison test to see whether the home connection is involved, but cellular latency and data limits may make it unsuitable for regular matches. A VPN may change the route, but it can also add latency and another point of failure; it is not a default fix. Consider replacing a router or changing internet plans only after testing Ethernet, another network where practical, and household congestion. More download bandwidth alone does not guarantee lower ping.
